So what are you going to do about it? If you have kids are you going to fight (or pay) to get your kids into the whitest schools? Because if your parents raised you like that, it’s going to take more than making fun of a racist white lady to change things. Most middle class white people say they want integration, but when it comes down to it, “what’s best for the children” always comes down to minimizing exposure to Black kids. We see it with Millennial gentrifiers is Brooklyn and other urban areas, including my own little city of Wilmington. You don’t have to openly demonize Black children to participate.

The other side of this is, as integrated high schools (which in my area means about 30% or fewer working class white students to 60% Black and Latino, not 90% white with a handful of Black kids bused in) improve, their reputations still flounder. My local public high schools offer career pathways, International Baccalaureate, state of the art facilities, passionate music and arts instructors, and dual college enrollment. They’re highly rated by the state. But most white middle class parents wouldn’t be caught dead sending their kids there, instead swarming the charters and privates. Oh, and the one predominantly white public school that is overcrowded and has inferior facilities. They’re more than happy to accept crowded classrooms in exchange for “safety.” Did I mention this is an elementary school?
