there are two types of dadsĀ
Two very different types of dads
Fucking annoyed at how many times Iāve given a friend or student a twenty second explanation of a grammatical (+ punctuation, etymology, etc.) concept and theyāre like āthatās IT? No teacher ever explained it to me that way!ā
Right because teachers donāt explain language rules in a functional way, which is ridiculous.
Hereās a common one: āsay fewer if you can count it, less if you canāt count it.
Example: there may be less water in the sea, but fewer water bottles on the table, because I cannot count the āwatersā but I can count the water bottles.ā
Hereās one I like to do: instead of trying to explain subject and object pronouns, I tell them,Ā āThink about what the answer could potentially be in terms ofĀ āhe/him, she/her, or they/them.ā If the answer ends in a consonant, then so should your question. For example:Ā
āWhom is it for?Ā It is for them.ā
āWho is coming to the party? She is coming to the party.ā
āWho said that? He said that.ā
The issue is that grammar isnāt really taught anymore; itās absorbed. We assume people willĀ ājust figure it outā because people DO develop an instinctive grasp of the grammar of their native language. You hear something often enough, you can tell when itĀ ājust doesnāt sound right.āĀ
But the problem with that is twofold: 1) language, especially spoken language, evolves, and 2) instinctive grammar doesnāt always cover writtenĀ language, since we donāt write the same way we talk.Ā
Itās why we end up with things likeĀ āshould ofā (when it should beĀ āshould haveā), or people sayingĀ āFor all intensive purposesā (instead of āfor all intents and purposesā) or trying to put anĀ āaā inĀ ādefinitely.ā Grammar (and spelling) isnāt necessarily intuitive, especially in the bonkers language that is English, but there areĀ some rules that can be taught and understood and generally trusted to be true most of the time. They justā¦arenāt taught anymore? And that baffles me too.Ā
(I was a straight-A student and a writer and it wasnāt until I became a writing tutor that I finally had to learn the actual rules of grammar myself, so that I could teach them to others, because saying something like,Ā āI know a comma goes here but I canāt really tell you why, I just know itā isnāt good teaching.)
Iām worried that Iām not very good at coming up with original ideas. A lot of the story ideas I have are very similar to other stories Iāve read, and I often have a hard time even thinking of plot points if I havenāt seen something like them used before. I know some people say that a lot of creativity is using things from other sources that you like, but I think I go a little too far with it. Do you have any advice for being more original?
This problem comes from overthinking. Kind of. The thing about the wordĀ āoriginalā that bugs me is that people think it meansĀ ānever seen beforeā, but thatās not how it should be perceived by an artist or a writer. Original should meanĀ āseen again in a different wayā because honestly, there are no new ideas; there are only twisted ones. Creativity isnāt using things from other art, itās changing them. If you want to write a science fiction story that takes place on a spaceship in the far depths of the galaxy, go right ahead, but the aspects you mirror from other fiction should be tweaked to be your own, rather than a reflection of another authorās interpretation of these devices.Ā
For instance, Iām writing a superhero story that has a lot of similarities to the Marvel comics, but thereās a lot of things Iāve changed or elaborated more on than the comic series did when it comes to what a world with superheroes would look like. I focus on different what ifs and different struggles of characters in these circumstances, and though itās easy to see where my inspiration came from, itās clearly a very different story that I would classify as original.
Original is an often misunderstood word in art, but hopefully this explanation will contribute toward a less constricting mindset, and give you new ideas toward your own work.

Let's be Friends in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite! My Friend Code is: 6082 9397 7719.
IāM CRYING HEāS STANDING IN THE ASS-TITS POSE
how did abortions get banned faster than assault rifles
iām starting to realize the āfriendship where we bully each otherā thing is a complicated subject for me, because as a survivor of bullying and my interests being mocked for basically my entire life, i donāt really find it funny or endearing when pals do it. i donāt mind gentle insults and inside jokes, but idk, there has to be a point where you go āmaybe i shouldnāt cut on my friendās new oc or special interestā and stop yourself. i think we should all try a little harder to know that boundary and not put our friends in those situations
My best friend and I used to greet each other with insults (āhey bitch!ā āwassup slut?ā) and generally poke fun at each other all the time. Itās how we showed affection, just constant little pokes and prods and minor nuisances. But I noticed that these exchanges were wearing her down through little behavioral ticks, like sheād go quiet or her laugh wasnāt as bubbly. So I changed how I show her affection and now scream āhi Dawn I love you :Dā at the top of my lungs when I say hi. And I hear her stifle a giggle and she answers with either ālove you tooā or āhiiiii, love you!!!ā depending on her mood at the time.
Itās fine to have a close friendship where you can pretend to be mean to each other and you both understand that none of that meanness is real. But the second it starts to feel real to either of you, that behavior should change.
