i just wanted to ask if you can see my vision with this ok, dad!robby thinking mateo is just your good friend until he walks on you two making out, like #awkward
- ๐
bitch???? this just lit me up katy perry fireworks style??? im actually losing my fucking mind
you and mateo being best friends ofc!! but likeโฆbut like.
robby never suspected a thing, every time youโre with him just seems so platonic, and youโve never slipped up about being all boyfriend and girlfriend with him. plus!! when you sit in the living room you both sit on the end, and you cuss him out 24/7!! you musttt hate him duh
robby lovesss mateo, he watches sports with him when you donโt want to, helps him with projects, helps him with his motorcycle, like thats his mfing DAWG
just like typical you think robby wonโt be back for the night because you requested the house to yourself for a girls night, and he checks the cameras and sees just that!! all your little girl friends coming overโฆand mateo? oh okay!! thatโs fine!! and when the night is over he just thinks everyone is gone, and decides to come back home to the comfort of his own bed instead of crashing at jacks house.
what he doesnโt expect to see is mateos car all comfy in the garageโฆthatโs still fine with him, he sleeps over occasionally, maybe you guys drank a bit after everyone left, whatever, heโs not one to judge.
your bed cannot contain the way you both sleep, just wild and limbs everything everywhere all at once so he againโฆexpects. expects to see mateo on the couch, or maybe in his bed since he wouldnโt be there for the night, no problem! heโll sleep on the couch. BUT THATS NOT THE CASEEEEE๐คฌ๐คฌ๐คฌ๐คฌ
robbyโs room is right across the hall, heโll just check in on you guys, a little peak to maybe take a picture of you guys literally fighting over 1/4 of the bed to laugh at later
he stops in his tracks when he hears a male voice and a girly ass whine his heart actually stops completely
โfuck babyโ oh okay!!
he opens the door as fast as fuck and immediately crashes out, mateo and you both lying on your sides facing each other, his hand down your pants while yโall make out. WELL HEโLL BE DAMNED!!
lowkey chill about it because he loves mateo and doesnโt wanna ban him from the house forever, so he just screams โheyyy!โ and closes the door. ofc you donโt continue because now you know robby is here, so you sneak out and just go to mcdonalds and eat there, staying for a while to think of a plan to inevitably talk about this tomorrow in the parking lot

โข wc: 9.7k+
โข authorโs note. wrote this with a vague idea and a dream. i don't know. don't ask pls.
You were here strictly for business.
The lobby was all polished glass, military-grade charm, and propaganda dressed in gold. Cameras flashed like fireworks along the crimson carpet, catching every inch of shine from designer suits and sharp smiles. A towering digital screen looped the promo again: "The New Avengers: Built for Tomorrow." You watched from the fringe as the montage played, the images slicing together in quick successionโJohn Walker throwing the shield with over-practised precision, Yelena Belova dismantling a room of dummies in under twelve seconds, and Ava Starr phasing through a concrete wall with a smirk. Hero shots. Sanitized. Manufactured. All of them.
You didnโt blink as you were ushered to an elevator.
Growing up, the Avengers Tower never really felt real to you. Sure, youโd seen the photos, the documentaries, the endless footage of press conferences held on its front steps. Hell, youโd even walked past it with your parents whenever you visited New Yorkโbut it still felt like it belonged to another world entirely. Untouchable. Almost mythic.
You never imagined youโd walk inside.
And yet now, riding the elevator up with a slow-climbing hum and nerves that prickled beneath your skin, all you felt was dread.
It was a strange kind of emptinessโthe feeling of finally reaching something you once admired, only to realize it had been gutted and repainted in someone elseโs image. The marble floors had been waxed clean, but the history here wasnโt. You could still feel the ghosts under the polish. Somewhere between the seams of the rebuilt walls and reprogrammed elevators, there was once a legacy. Real one. But it didnโt belong to the people in charge of this event.
You were crammed in with a handful of Congress members and defence contractors, all of whom smelled like cologne and quiet greed. Congressman Gary was there too, smiling too much, already half-drunk from the limo ride there. (He said it would be the only way heโd survive an entire night listening to people praise Valentina Allegra de Fontaine). Gary had been the one to suggest your attendance might smooth things over. It might make the New Avengers feel like someone from Samโs camp was willing to listen. Get on their good sideโthat whole thing.
But you were here for an entirely different reason. His invitation was exactly what you needed to get in, though.
Underneath your gownโsleek, formal, and designed to draw no conclusionsโyou had a mic stitched into the seam of your strapless bodice. Hidden, but live. Your earpiece buzzed softly with Joaquรญnโs voice, casual as ever.
โIf Sam finds out weโre doing this, weโre so dead.โ
You bit the inside of your cheek, trying not to be overheard as the elevator operator gave a rehearsed speech about the towerโs restorationโhow it stood now as a symbol of โunity, rebirth, and strength.โ You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. The tower didnโt feel like a symbol. It felt like a stage.
โHeโll take away your wings at most,โ you murmured, gaze fixed forward. โRelax.โ
You could practically hear Joaquรญn pouting through the comms.
โI just got them back.โ
โThen letโs not make a scene. Gary said itโd be good optics to have someone on our side here. Weโre doing Sam a favour.โ A pause. Then, quieter: โIโm surprised you didnโt want to come with me. Youโre cleared for field work.โ
โNo, thanks. As much as I adore red carpet politics, I donโt think I can be in the same room as de Fontaine without committing a felony. Might get myself in trouble.โ
โAnd I wonโt?โ
โYouโre better at smiling.โ
โYouโve never seen me smile.โ
โExactly.โ
You exhaled through your nose, the tiniest edge of a grin forming before you could stop it.
โJust... try not to piss anyone off for five minutes, yeah?โ
You didnโt answer. The elevator chimed. The doors slid open with a muted ding, and you stepped into a wall of flashing lights and artificial warmth.
The event space had been reconstructed on the upper floors, a showroom designed to impress donors and government officials alike. White marble floors stretched endlessly beneath towering banners that hung from the ceilings like monuments. Each one bore the new emblem of the teamโsleek and stylized, but hollow. You could see the press eating it up already.
A digital display behind the podium read:
WELCOME TO THE FUTURE.
MEET EARTHโS NEWEST MIGHTIEST HEROES.
Your stomach turned.
โYou still with me?โ Joaquรญn asked.
โYeah.โ You nodded once, moving deeper into the room as your eyes scanned the crowd for familiar faces. โIโm here.โ
โIโm gonna need camera access,โ he said. โThereโs a chip tucked under the gem on your bracelet. If you can slide that into an outlet somewhere, Iโll be able to map out the floorโs electrical system. Should help me locate the control room.โ
โGuy in the chair,โ you muttered, lips twitching into a faint grin. It was impressiveโhis gadgets, his confidence. Typical Joaquรญn.
Congressman Gary had vanished into the crowd, but you didnโt mind. Better alone than attached to a man who introduced you as a pet project. You plucked a glass of champagne from a passing tray, the cold stem grounding in your fingers, and sidestepped toward the edge of the room.
An outlet revealed itself by a floor-length curtain. You knelt, as if adjusting your heel, and casually broke the gem from your bracelet, slipping it into the socket with practiced ease.
โOkay,โ Joaquรญn said, voice clearer now. โGive me a minute to get my bearings. While Iโm working on this, try not to look like a loser in the corner. Mingle or something.โ
You scoffed under your breath. โEasy for you to sayโyou can talk anyoneโs ear off.โ
โYou calling me annoying?โ
โYeah.โ
โWow. Go see if you can find Bucky while I work on this, would you?โ
Right. Bucky Barnes.
You werenโt here to mingle. You werenโt here to sip champagne or shake hands or sweet-talk your way into the New Avengersโ good graces. You were here for Sam. And more specificallyโfor Bucky. Wherever the hell he was hiding.
The plan was simple enough in theory: Get a read on what Valentina was playing at. Try to talk to Bucky. Get ahead of whatever fallout was brewing between him and Sam before it turned into a full-blown civil war again. Youโd offered to go because no one else would.
Joaquรญn was trying to stay neutral (and failing). Isaiah had dismissed Bucky as a long-lost white man with too many ghosts. And Sam refused to speak to Bucky since the news broke about the New Avengers. And Bucky hadnโt said a damn word back.
So here you were. You were the only one left who might still be able to stand in the space between them without setting off alarms, even if you were biased.
You still didnโt understand how Bucky could do it. How he could go from testifying before Congress about accountability and reform, to standing beside Valentina Allegra de Fontaine like she hadnโt personally undone everything theyโd fought for. Like he hadnโt been there when Ross tried to throw his friends all in cells. (Sure, you weren't there for it either, but Sam told you all about it; the accords were one of the reasons the Avengers broke up.)
Valentina wasnโt just dangerousโshe was calculated. Clever. The kind of dangerous that worked in the shadows, smiling for cameras while quietly tying strings around peopleโs necks. She had her ex-husband arrested, sabotaged Wakandan outreach missions, and picked through the wreckage of post-blip heroes like she was drafting a fantasy football team. The fact that she now had a unit of enhanced individuals marching under her payroll and calling themselves the New Avengers made your stomach turn.
And Bucky was one of them.
You believed Valentina was guilty the second Bucky first mentioned sheโd recruited John Walker. Walkerโwho had murdered a man in public, with blood still wet on the shieldโand somehow walked free. Charges vanished. Headlines redirected. Now he was being repackaged as a hero again, and Bucky was standing next to him like nothing had happened.
You couldnโt wrap your head around it. No matter how many angles you looked at it from, it didnโt make sense. And the more you thought about it, the more it burned in your chest.
What was he thinking?
Why hadnโt he said anything?
Why wasnโt he here?
You pulled in a slow breath as you stepped further into the room, letting the sound of clinking glasses and diplomatic small talk wash over you like static.
The room was grand in a gaudy wayโshiny surfaces and marble floors that reflected the chandelier light too harshly. Everything screamed polished excess, like they were trying to distract from the blood under the polish.
You tried to scan the crowd for Bucky, but there were too many faces, too many government suits and PR smiles, none of them him. You told yourself that when you did find Bucky, heโd have some kind of explanationโsomething to loosen the knot in your chest, something that could push down the rising anxiety. Something that could explain how the man you once trusted was now parading around in a suit under Valentinaโs thumb.
Instead, you found Congressman Gary. Or rather, he found you.
He was already three glasses of champagne deepโfive, if you counted the shots youโd seen him down on the wayโand he beamed like heโd found a shiny toy in a sea of suits.
โThere she is,โ he said, slinging an arm around your shoulder like you hadnโt just been avoiding him for fifteen minutes. โYou have got to meet some of these people. Big names. Big wallets.โ
You were too polite to shrug him off, even as he dragged you into a circle of De Fontaineโs investors. Their grins were just a little too sharp, their eyes a little too eager. The way they looked at you made your skin crawl, like you were a chess piece they hadnโt quite decided how to play yet.
You smiled tightly. Shook clammy hands. Answered vague questions. Nodded while they spoke about โopportunities,โ โrebuilding legacy,โ and โrebranding heroism.โ
One man leaned in closer, his breath thick with bourbon. โYou know,โ he said, voice oily, โwith your background, youโd be a perfect candidate for the new team. Valentina has a real eye for talent, and weโre building something bigger than what came before. Something better. You could help shape it from the inside.โ
You swallowed your disgust with a sip of champagne. โIโm not really looking to join anything right now.โ That was a lie. You already had a seat in the team Sam was putting together. But he did not need to know that.
He chuckled, as if that wasnโt an answer.
โOkay, Iโve got eyes,โ Joaquรญn said suddenly in your ear. His voice broke through the haze like a rope thrown across stormy water.
You exhaled in relief. โExcuse me,โ you told the group, already turning away. โI need to grab a drink.โ
They nodded, already moving on to the next opportunity in heels. Gary wasnโt too happy, though.
You drifted from the circle, walking slowly toward the open bar. On the way, you passed a tray of themed hors dโoeuvresโtiny โAvengerโ sliders with edible logos, cupcakes shaped like shields and guns.
A mounted camera in the corner caught your eye, its red light blinking lazily above a velvet-draped sculpture.
โSee me?โ you muttered.
โYeah, I see you,โ Joaquรญn replied.
โStill no sign of Barnes.โ
โScanning crowd pings now,โ he said. โEither heโs ghosting the place or he got another haircut and I canโt recognize him. Which would be so like him, by the way.โ
You sighed and accepted another drink from a passing server, something dry and too expensive, and kept moving.
You figured youโd shaken at least six hands tonight that belonged to people whoโd love to see your head on a stickโif not for the lucrative optics of you standing here at all. You were an opportunity to them. A symbol. A bargaining chip in a war they didnโt even understand.
Your dress caught suddenly.
You stumbledโonly a step, but enough for the chilled drink to slosh dangerously near the edge of the glass. You turned on instinct, hand rising to fix the silk scarf that had slipped from your neck and shoulder.
A man stood behind you, wide-eyed, hand half-raised like heโd been about to catch you.
โIโIโm so sorry,โ he stammered. His voice was low, a subtle rumble barely audible over the layers of clinking glass, conversation, and ambient music. โโstepped on your dress. Sorry.โ
You blinked, caught off guard.
He looked like he didnโt belong here. Not in the way the others did. No glossy name tag, no designer smugness. His suit was clean, but not flashy. Understated.
โItโs fine,โ you said quickly, instinctively adjusting your scarf where it had slipped from your shoulder. You shook out the fabric of your dress around the ankles, heart skipping in the echo of that voice. Something about the way he said itโapologetic, soft, like he genuinely meant itโcaught you off guard.
โSorry,โ he mumbled again, even quieter this time, eyes dropping to the floor. His dark hair fell over his face, almost like he was trying to shrink three sizes. You could hear a faint, awkward laugh in his voice. โUhmโฆ yeah. Sorry.โ
He didnโt linger. Just turned and slipped back into the crowd before you could even process anything. No second glance. Just a gentle pivot and a few long strides back into the crowd, swallowed instantly by the sea of shoulder pads, press passes, and sharp perfume.
You stood there for a second, staring after him.
He moved differently from the others. No performative swagger. No politicianโs posture. No tray in his hand, so heโs definitely not a server. He was quiet in a way that made you feel like youโd imagined him, like heโd only brushed through this reality for a second before vanishing into another.
You didnโt recognize him.
And you should have.
For all the files youโd scoured, the profiles and photos, the research youโd buried yourself in to prepare for tonight, youโd made it your job to know every player in this room. Who to watch. Who to avoid. Who might be useful.
But not him.
You turned back toward the bar, but your mind didnโt follow. Not entirely.
Who the fuck was that?
You were just about to ask Joaquรญn to pull a facial scan when something in your periphery stopped you cold.
John Walker.
He was only a few steps away, mid-conversation with some high-level sponsor, until his gaze landed on you. And then he froze.
The look that crossed his face was quick, recognition, discomfort, maybe a flicker of guilt, but he buried it just as fast, turning away without a word. He pivoted like a man avoiding a ghost, ignoring the way the sponsor he spoke to called after him.
โWalker just made a hard left into the hors dโoeuvres,โ Joaquรญn muttered in your ear, low and amused. โYou see that?โ
You exhaled, more irritated than surprised. โWeโre not here for him.โ
โYeah. I think he knows that too. Thatโs why heโs pretending heโs got important shrimp to eat.โ
That pulled a faint smile from you, biting down the urge to laugh.
Typical. The last time youโd seen Walker in person, he was seated in a courtroom with his jaw clenched so tight you thought heโd snap a molar. Youโd testified in his case, alongside Sam, Bucky, and everyone else who had to witness what happened in Madripoorโwhat he did to that man in the square. The shield, slick and red. The silence afterward, heavier than any explosion.
You never fought him. Never had to. But you'd been on opposite sides of that mess, and he knew it. Hell, youโd spoken directly to his discharge. Your words were probably still echoing in the back of his skull.
The way he turned away just nowโฆ yeah. He remembered you.
โIโm surprised he didnโt start barking about national security,โ Joaquรญn quipped in your ear again. โDo you think we should trail him?โ
You hesitated. You didnโt want to. Just the idea of following in Walkerโs smug footsteps made your jaw clench.
But Joaquรญn pressed, โHe might know where Bucky is.โ
And that was the problemโhe was right. And you hated how much sense it made. Of course, Walker would know. You also hate how Walker and Bucky were probably friends now.
A camera flash caught your eye, and you instinctively straightened your posture, smoothed your expression. No time for a scowl, even if thatโs all you wanted to wear.
You adjusted your gown, tugged lightly at the hem, checked the wire hidden at your waist, and started walking in the direction Walker and that ugly barret he wore had vanished.
The crowd shifted around you like tidewaterโpolished politicians and strategic handshakes, investors with too-white smiles and drinks that cost more than your rent. Every few steps, someone waved. A few shook your hand like they knew you, like you were an old friend theyโd been waiting for. A woman asked for a photo. Another leaned in and whispered, โAre you joining the new team?โ like it were a secret worth selling.
You deflected with a nod and a vague smile, each interaction leaving a layer of static behind your eyes.
It was strange how quickly the attention shifted now that you were in the spotlight. Recently, youโd spent most of your career standing behind Isaiah while Joaquรญn and Sam did the talking. You liked it there. It was quieter. Easier to breathe. Now, suddenly, they were holding out chairs for you at the table.
The whole thing felt like theatre. Scripted and glassy. Lines rehearsed. Costumes ironed. Every player doing their part beneath the blinding stage lights.
You still werenโt sure what was worseโthat Bucky accepted Valentinaโs funding, or that he and his new friends let her call them The Avengers.
Sam was right to be angry. He should be. Heโd already turned down President Rossโ private offer to hand him the reins of a military-funded global response team. The same offer that Valentina had repackaged, repurposed, and handed off to people who were too coward to say no.
โHeโs on the east end, talking to Ava starr and another woman. I think sheโs Valentinaโs assistant. Ohโshit. He just pointed at you.โ
Your chest tightened. You turned too fast, momentarily losing your bearings in the rotating lights and mirrored walls. Eastโeastโ
And then someone stepped into your path.
A wall of a man appeared in front of you so suddenly, you nearly collided with him; broad-shouldered and bearded, dressed in a burgundy suit that looked just a size too tight across his chest.
He smiled widely, eyes bright like heโd been waiting for a moment like this all night.
โI know you,โ he said, voice thick with a Russian accent. โIโve seen you on the televisions. You shake hands with the new Captain America.โ
You blinked. โIโuh, yeah.โ
โAh!โ He laughed, clapping one heavy hand to your shoulder with surprising gentleness for a man who looked like he could punch through drywall. โVery brave of you. Very good. You look different in person. In a strong way. Like a panther. Or mongoose.โ
You tried for a diplomatic smile. โThanks, I think.โ
โOh! Where are my manners,โ he said, dramatically straightening and offering his hand. โI am Alexei Shostakov. The Red Guardian.โ
You knew that, but you didnโt know heโd be so... loud.
You took his hand, his grip warm and firm. โPleasure to meet you, Alexei.โ
โKind. Very kind,โ he said, eyes gleaming. โYou remind me of my daughter! You have same fire in eyes. Around same age, tooโyou could be friends! Yelena is always looking for new friends.โ
Yelena Belova. That name lit something up in the back of your mind. Youโd seen the files. The attempted murder of Clint Barton. Her brief status as an independent threat before being absorbed, quietly and conveniently, into Valentinaโs new game.
And suddenly, Alexeiโs smile widened even more.
โYelena!โ he bellowed, cupping his hands to his mouth as if you werenโt standing in the middle of a very public, very polished gala. โCome meet new friend!โ
Several heads turned. Cameras flashedโbright, blinding. You winced against the burst of lights, regretting everything from your dress colour to your decision to show up at all.
But it was too late. He leaned in beside you, one arm suddenly draped over your shoulder like you were posing for a family Christmas card. โSmile!โ he boomed, and before you could protest, he struck a dramatic flex, biceps pressing into your back like steel girders.
You caught a whiff of expensive cologne and vodka.
In the corner of your eye, a flash of short, bleached blonde hair was making its way through the crowd with frightening determination. Elegant, yesโbut there was no mistaking the sharpness in Yelena Belovaโs gaze. She wore a sleek black suit like it was made of knives, a funky eyeliner design, hair slicked back and every step carved with purpose. And beside herโ
Your heart dipped.
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Poised. Smirking. Watching everything.
โBe careful. Yelena is coming your way with Valentina.โ
Thanks for the warning, Joaquรญn. Delayed. But thanks nevertheless.
You stood up straighter, willing your heartbeat to slow down even as Valentinaโs eyes zeroed in on you like a predator clocking a foe.
Wonderful.
You leaned slightly toward Alexei, trying not to seem as panicked as you felt. โCan I ask you something? About Bucky Barnes?โ
โAh!โ he exclaimed, cutting you off before you could finish the question. โBucky! Yes, yes. The Winter Soldier. Very cool. Very handsome. Like Soviet James Dean.โ
You blinked. โI meanโdo you know where he is?โ
But Alexei was already on another tangent. โWe fought in Uzbekistan once, did you know this? I threw him through a door. He did not like that. But I like him. I like him very much. Quiet, serious type. You know he never answers my texts?โ
โRight. Yeah. That tracks.โ
And thenโ
โOh, what a pleasant surprise,โ said a voice sharp as champagne fizz and just as bitter. De Fontaine. She cut into the conversation with the smoothness of someone who was always in control, grinning like she knew a secret you didnโt. A glass of bubbly dangled between her fingers, catching the light just enough to draw attention. As if she needed help with that.
โI was just about to introduce you all,โ she said, placing a perfectly manicured hand on Yelenaโs arm as the blonde finally joined your little nightmare circle.
โWhat is this?โ Yelena asked flatly, eyes flicking between you and Valentina.
Valentina didnโt bother to answerโjust gave a smug little hum and tugged Yelena closer, corralling her between you and Alexei. The four of you shifted automatically into position, an unspoken reflex in rooms like this.
You could feel the cameras turning like sharks in bloodied water.
Flashes burst across your vision. The moment was already capturedโyour stiff shoulders, your frozen smile. A picture-perfect lineup of cooperation.
And you could feel it: this wasnโt a coincidence.
This was intentional.
Valentina leaned in, voice cool and sugary against your ear as more bulbs burst. โI am so pleased to see you here,โ she cooed, โconsidering how close you and Sam are.โ
โI mean, I had to come congratulate you,โ you said tightly, lips barely moving. โRecreating the Avengers. Thatโsโฆ big.โ
She beamed at the cameras, teeth white and wolfish. โSomeone had to.โ
โOf course.โ
Another flash. Another frozen pose.
You winced. Sam is going to kill you.
Valentina fielded the sudden swarm of questions like she was born in front of a podiumโdeflecting, redirecting, charming. Every answer was deliberate, each word chosen like a chess move. Stability. Legacy. Global confidence. Alliances.
They lapped it up like champagne, snapping photos, nodding, laughing. You stood beside her, barely blinking, jaw tight behind your polite smile.
You werenโt meant to be part of this show. You were supposed to be on the outside looking in from the in the crowd.
When the flashes finally began to die down and the clamour shifted elsewhere, Valentina turned with that too-perfect, too-white grin. She glanced at Yelena and Alexei like she were dismissing children.
โWould you two mind?โ she asked, breezy as ever. โIโd like to have a quick little chat.โ
Yelenaโs gaze flicked toward you. Not unkind. But cautious. Reading you like a live wire.
โIs everything all right?โ she asked, her brows subtly knitting.
โOh, everythingโs perfectly fine,โ Valentina replied before you could speak, her hand already at your back. โGo fetch a drink. Mingle.โ
It wasnโt a suggestion.
You barely had time to glance back at Yelenaโat the slight, suspicious narrowing of her eyesโbefore the crowd swallowed her and Alexei whole.
Your earpiece crackled to life. โSheโs taking you to the balcony,โ Joaquรญn said, voice low and taut. โThere are no cameras there. I wonโt be able to see, but I can still hear you.โ
There was a pause, then: โIโll keep looking for Bucky.โ
You barely managed a breath of relief before Valentina cut in, sharp and smiling.
โBuckyโs not here tonight, if thatโs really why youโre here.โ
You stiffened mid-step.
Joaquรญn swore in your ear. Something heavy hit a surfaceโmaybe his fist against a tableโand you heard the scrape of a chair.
โWhat do you mean?โ you asked, your voice light, falsely sweet. โI came to celebrate you.โ
You crossed the threshold to the balcony.
It was quieter out here, eerily so. The muffled pulse of the gala was dulled by glass and distance. The cold kissed your skin through your dress. You could feel it biting at your exposed arms, but you welcomed the sting. It was honest.
Below, the city stretched like a glowing circuit board. Skyscrapers hummed with light. Traffic moved in golden veins. It was beautiful in the kind of way that felt removed. Untouchable.
Valentinaโs heels clicked once against the stone floor, then stopped.
โCut the bullshit,โ she scoffed, voice low now. โWe both know thatโs not true.โ
You turned your head, slow and steady. Her eyes were already on you. Unflinching.
โWhereโs your friend?โ she asked casually. โThe little Mexican one?โ
You flinchedโjust barely. Your jaw clenched tight.
Valentina smiled wider at that.
You opened your mouth to answer, to lie, to throw her off, to say something clever, but she leaned forward before you could, voice barely above a whisper.
Her lips were close to your collarbone, eyes locked on your chest. On the mic she couldnโt see.
โHola, Joaquรญn,โ she murmured, velvet-smooth. โยฟCรณmo estรกs? Howโs the arm? Still broken?โ
She pulled back with a grin full of satisfaction. Joaquรญn didnโt respondโnot a breath. But you felt the burn of it in your gut. He heard her. She knew he was listening. And that was the whole point.
She got what she wanted. You could see it in the eyes, the tilt of her head, the calm sip from her glass, the curl of smugness just under her lipstick.
Valentina turned her back to the railing, facing you fully, her glass catching the amber light of the city. Her smile didnโt crack once.
โYou know,โ she began, like she was catching up with an old friend, her voice silked with charm, โyou donโt have to keep playing both sides. Itโs exhausting, isnโt it?โ
You said nothing. Not because you didnโt have something to say, but because the words wouldnโt form. Your brain was too busy calculating exits, signals, whether Joaquรญn could hear any of this, or if he was already doing something stupid like storming into the gala uninvited.
โYou show up with a wire,โ she continued, waving her champagne flute like it weighed nothing, โa dress like that, pretending youโre just here to smile for the cameras.โ
Her eyes dipped slowly, then back up.
โYou do look stunning, by the way,โ she added casually. โBut we both know youโre not here for the press or to butter yourself up to me or my team. Youโre listening. Recording. Digging...โ
The flute met her lips again. Sip. Deliberate.
โLooking for Barnes,โ she said. โLike heโs going to whisper some grand truth thatโll fix whatever little crisis your friends are having.โ
You could feel your jaw tighten. Every word she spoke landed like pressure against a bruise you didnโt want to admit was there.
Valentina tilted her head, studying you with the kind of gaze that belonged in an interrogation room, not a rooftop party. โYouโre sharp,โ she said. โGood instincts. Itโs why Sam keeps you close, right?โ
Still, you stayed silent. Because anything you gave her, sheโd twist. She already was.
โBut let me ask you something,โ she said, voice a shade lower, softer. โWhatโs loyalty really worthโif the people you serve are always the ones left bleeding in the dirt?โ
A pulse of heat shot up your neck. You didnโt move, but she saw it.
Of course, she saw it.
โAnd for the record,โ she added, twirling the stem of her glass, โI donโt have anything against Sam Wilson. Poor guy. I pity him, actually. The shit heโs put up with just for carrying that shieldโGod.โ
She clicked her tongue with exaggerated sympathy.
โIโd kill to have Captain America on my team. The real one. Not Walker. That man is a pathetic as it gets. Hair-trigger temper, zero emotional intelligenceโโ
โSam would never work with you,โ you said, sharper than intended.
Valentinaโs smile widened because you finally said something worthwhile. โOh, I know,โ she said, almost gleefully. โHeโs a purist. One of the last. His morals are steel-tight. Fucking unshakable. A real Boy Scout. Steve Rogers made a good choice.โ
And that was the part that hurtโthe part that made you swallow back a flicker of doubt you hadnโt expected to feel.
โWhereโs Bucky?โ you asked, voice quieter now. โI just want to talk to him.โ
She didnโt even hesitate.
โBuckyโs not missing or anything,โ Valentina said. โHeโs busy. Doing a job for me in Pennsylvania. Cleaning up some loose ends, you know the deal.โ
You felt it before you could stop itโthat tiny, invisible shift in your expression. Something cracked. Something gave her an answer you hadnโt meant to give.
โThat supposed to scare me?โ you asked, though it already kind of did.
โNo,โ she said. โItโs supposed to make you think. About options. About what someone like you could do with the right resources. With the right funding. Imagine it: you with your own team. Autonomy. Access. No more red tape. You make your own shots. We clean up whatever mess you leave behind. And, get this, you even get paid for it.โ
You glanced toward the city, anything to avoid her eyes. Lights. Windows. Warmth. All of it felt so far away.
โAnd if I say no?โ
โThen someone else says yes.โ
She stepped back, brushing something from her blazer sleeve. โJust think about it,โ she said, all silk and sugar again. โWe could use someone like you. You belong in rooms like this, you know. Not chasing ghosts, or waiting for Wilson to approve your next move. Youโre already breaking. I can see it. You wouldnโt be here tonight if you werenโt. Iโm sure Captain America wonโt be happy seeing your name in the headlines tomorrow morning: The Next Potenital Avenger.โ
Her smile held, framed in the cold, glittering dark of the balcony. Then she turned and walked past you, the soft graze of her shoulder against yours more intimate than it had any right to be. A mockery of closeness.
โEnjoy the rest of your evening,โ she said, already stepping back through the doors. โTell Sam I said hi.โ
The glass door shut behind her with a quiet click.
And the cold came in fast.
Not just the air, but the after. The silence. The wrongness of being left alone up here, the wind biting now that you werenโt so focused on not showing fear.
Your body finally remembered it was yours. Your fingers hurt from gripping the railing too hard. You eased your hands free, flexed them, saw the white draining slowly from your knuckles. You still couldnโt feel them.
Your mic hissed faintly to life, and Joaquรญnโs voice filtered through the static like someone calling out to you underwater.
โโฆyou okay?โ he asked, strained. Urgent.
You didnโt answer right away. Your mind was still racing through what Valentina had said, how easily sheโd dodged your defences, how easy she was to turn your presence into a publicity stunt, how well she knew youโor at least thought she did.
She must be blackmailing Bucky. That must be it.
You kept staring out at the skyline like it might give you an answer. It didnโt. Just glass and steel and lights that blinked too slow to feel alive.
โNo,โ you finally muttered.
It didnโt come out strong. It came out cracked. Like the inside of your chest had gone hollow, and you were just now realizing it.
Joaquรญn exhaled through the comm, like heโd been holding his breath.
โI think legal action is our next step,โ he said, tone snapping back into focus like a lifeline. โWe can sue them for the name. Trademark it. Or maybeโmaybe Sam tries to talk to Bucky again? Weโve still got options.โ
You didnโt respond. Not yet.
The railing under your palm felt like ice. You blinked hard, fighting back the sudden sting in your eyes. Not from fear. From frustration. From the way every word she said still echoed in your head, sticky and sharp, leaving splinters behind.
You dragged in a breath.
โโฆthat fucking bitch,โ you scoffed.
โYeahโฆ I donโt like Valentina either.โ
You jumped.
The voice came from somewhere behind you, softer, unsure. You spun around on instinct, stepping away from the railing.
That man.
The one who stepped on your dress earlier. He was sitting now, low in one of the patio couches near a sleek electric fireplace that flickered lazily against the dark. The flames glinted off the patio doors and caught the edge of his profileโbrown hair, downturned mouth, eyes wide like he was the one who got caught.
You hadnโt noticed him when you came out here. And now that you really lookedโฆ you realized why.
He wasnโt trying to be seen.
He sat in the farthest corner of the couch, hunched slightly, knees close together, hands clutched like he didnโt know what to do with them. Like someone had planted him there and told him to wait. The firelight danced across his face, softening him. He didnโt look threatening. Just... startled. And oddly apologetic for existing.
He offered a small, nervous smile. โSorry, I didnโt mean to, likeโฆ scare you.โ
There was genuine concern in his voiceโconcern for you, not about you. That was rare.
โItโs fine,โ you said, because you didnโt know what else to say.
โWhoโs that?โ Joaquรญn's voice cracked through your earpiece.
You didnโt answer right away.
Your eyes stayed on the stranger, and for a moment, you debated whether or not to even breathe too loud.
โI donโt knowโฆโ You muttered.
โOkay, uhโฆ Iโll try to do a voice match or somethingโsee if anything comes up. Keep them talking.โ
The man mustโve noticed the way you were half-turned, the way your fingers brushed against your ear.
He shifted slightly. โWhoโreโฆ whoโre you talking to?โ
You froze. And then, with a wince: โUhโฆ justโฆ myself. Thinking out loud.โ
There was a pause.
โOh,โ he said. โYeah. I do that too. All the time, actually.โ
You werenโt sure what to do with that. You werenโt sure what to do with him.
He looked different now compared to earlier. Still awkward, still nervousโbut less like he was trying to shrink into himself and more like he was trying his best to meet you where you were. His eyes held yours this time. Not for long, though. They dropped to his hands and shoes after a while. But it was long enough to feel it.
You took a cautious step forward, angling yourself toward the fire, toward him, but still keeping a healthy distance.
โYou umโฆ You know Valentina?โ you asked. Stupid. Of course, he did. Everyone at this party did.
โUhโฆ yeah. Something like that,โ he said, rubbing the back of his neck. โI wasnโt likeโฆ eavesdropping or anything. Itโs justโthereโs a lot of people in there. And itโsโฆ quieter out here.โ
He hesitated, then added: โIโm Bob, by the way.โ
His voice wavered, but not from dishonesty. He said his name like he wasnโt sure it would mean anything to you. Like he just told you his name to be kind.
You gave him a nod. Not a smile. But not cold either.
โHi, Bob.โ
A beat passed.
You debated telling him your name. Joaquรญn would probably advise against it. But you werenโt feeling tactical anymoreโyou were feeling tired. Bruised in a way you couldnโt name. And maybe you just needed to feel like a real person again. Like someone who wasnโt being puppeteered.
So, after a pause, you gave him your name.
Bob blinked. Then he offered a small, shy smile that cracked at the edges.
โCool. Hi,โ he said, breathless. His brows furrowed as his gaze dropped lower, his eyes catching on your waist, your hips. โUhโsorry again, about your dress. I didnโt mean to step on it earlier. You looked like you were in a rush and Iโwell, I was definitely in your way.โ
You felt your lips twitch. The barest curve, not sharp or defensive. A faint grin. Delicate. โItโs alright,โ you said. โBound to happen at places like these.โ
His head tilted slightly, curious. โYou come to stuff like this often?โ
โNot often. Just sometimes.โ
And it was only then that you realized youโd stepped closer.
Your arms had casually found their place against the back of the couch across from him, hands gripping the cool metal frame as your scarf drifted with the breeze behind you. You werenโt leaning in exactly, but the distance had shrunk.
When did that happen?
You tilted your head, letting your eyes linger a little longer now, more curious than guarded. You assessed him with a little more attention now.
โIโm guessing you donโt come to these events much?โ
Bob immediately shook his head, a nervous, breathy laugh escaping his lips like it was running away from him. You could see the cloud of it in the cold night air, swirling and vanishing between you.
โGod, no. This is my second one and itโsโitโs been a lot. I think Iโm gonna ask to just stay in my room next time.โ He gave a little shrug, slouching a bit. โItโs not like I do much anyway. I mean, Iโm allowed to talk to people, and I like talking to people, but Iโd rather not sometimes.โ
That made you blink. Allowed?
The word snagged on something in your mind. There was something disarming about the way he said it, like he didnโt mean to offer that information but also didnโt think it was worth hiding. You couldnโt tell if he was joking, oversharing, or both. But it was too strange to ignore. Like it slipped past a filter that wasnโt built right. It made you hesitate, if only for a breath.
But he wasnโt watching your reaction. He was staring at the flicker of the fire, letting the silence sit between you like it belonged there.
You folded your arms gently across your chest, the smooth material of your dress whispering beneath your fingertips.
โYou seem to be talking just fine with me,โ you pointed out, softer now.
Bob looked down at his hands. Then back at you. Then away again.
โIโฆ wellโฆโ he stammered, voice catching on another shy, almost embarrassed laugh.
And then you saw it.
The blush. A warm pink crawling up from the collar of his white shirt to the apples of his cheeks. Subtle, but not subtle enough to miss. Especially not in the glow of the firelight, which danced over his skin like it had a crush of its own.
โIโฆ yeah, I... I donโt know. Some people are easier to talk to than others, I guess.โ
Your mouth twitched before you could stop it.
โYeah,โ you said, โIโd say so.โ
The smile that tugged at your lips came easier than you expected. Not just polite. Not guarded. Honest. Probably the first one youโd let slip all night.
Seriously, who the hell is this guy? And why did he make the night feel a little less awful?
He was cute. Not the kind of handsome that announces itself the second someone walks in the room, but the kind that sneaks up on you, quiet, awkward, totally unsure of how much space he takes up and trying not to be a bother. Like he wasnโt used to being looked at for too long and didnโt know where to put himself when he was.
Youโd seen a lot of people in this world wear confidence like a costume. Bob didnโt even try. He wore uncertainty like a second skin, and somehow, it made him feelโฆ real.
You liked the way he didnโt crowd you. Didnโt puff out his chest or pretend to have all the answers. He sat with his knees slightly knocked together, most of his hands swallowed by the sleeves of his jacket, like even they were too bold to leave out in the open. Maybe he was anxious. Maybe a little broken in the places that never healed right, but he felt safe. Your gut told you so.
And that made you more nervous than anything else tonight.
You caught yourself watching him again. The way he kept his hands mostly hidden in his sleeves, shoulders rounded forward. His suit was clearly tailored but still seemed a size too big, like someone had tried to wrap him in something expensive just to prove he belonged. And still, it worked.
His hair was brown and shaggy, a bit longer than most people would have it at these events, barely even styled, but you kind of liked it. It gave him a strange charm, even if the loose curls hid his eyes whenever he ducked his head.
You werenโt used to thoughts like this. Not ones this soft. Not ones that fluttered in your chest like nervous birds. Not often. Not like this. Not here. Not in places like these.
You came for Bucky. That was the plan. Show up, find him, talk. Clear the air. Maybe start patching things up with your broken little found familyโcracks and all. But Bucky wasnโt here. Valentina played you like a fiddle, and now the whole night had soured. Tomorrow, youโd wake up to press statements and headlines, scrambling to explain why your name wouldnโt be on the next New Avengers roster. Youโd spin it clean, of course. Thatโs what you did.
But none of that mattered yet.
In this strange little pocket of quiet, just outside the hum of power plays and champagne politics, you kind of just wanted something normal. Not mission normal. Not cover-identity normal. Real normal. A conversation that didnโt hinge on leverage or patriotism. A moment that wasnโt already weaponized.
Maybe you could stay for another half hour before you disappeared and joined Joaquรญn in the van downstairs, counting your losses.
And maybe it was the firelight, a flicker here, a flicker there, warmth and glow dancing in the night that influenced you. But you found yourself leaning forward a little more, walking around the couch, smoothing your hands down the front of your dress. You straightened your spine, trying to will yourself into being brave.
โWould you...โ You paused, โum. Do you wanna grab a drink with me?โ
Bob blinked, eyes flicking up to meet yours. He sat up straighter at the invitation, startled, like a puppy hearing its name for the first time. His lips parted. For a split second, you swore he looked excited. Maybe even hopeful.
But then he deflated.
His shoulders fell, his expression shifting to a quiet sort of apology as his eyes darted away. โI... I canโt. Sorryโโ
โOh.โ You blinked, trying not to let your smile falter.
โI want to,โ he rushed to say, almost stumbling over the words. โI do.โ
โItโs okayโโ
โNo. No. I would. Itโs just... IโmโIโm sober now.โ
Your mouth opened. Then closed.
โOh.โ
โIโm sorryโโ he added quickly, like he was terrified heโd ruined something.
But you shook your head, even stepping a little closer without realizing it.
โNo. Donโt be sorry,โ you said gently. โSeriously. Congratulations. Thatโs a big deal.โ
He smiled at that, small and grateful. A little crooked and thin-lipped. It was cute.
โThanks.โ
You hesitated a moment, then tilted your head. โCan I ask how long?โ
โUhโฆโ He scratched the back of his neck, eyes flicking upward like he was counting the months with the stars. โI think about a year now. Iโve only really started keeping track since I moved here, so... maybe like, seven? Eight months?โ
You smiled softly, your heart unexpectedly warm.
โThatโs still a long time.โ
He gave a sheepish shrug, and his cheeks pinked again, like he didnโt quite know what to do with your praise. Like no one gave it to him often enough for it to feel normal.
โSome days feel longer than others,โ he said, the corner of his mouth twitching at his own tease.
You couldnโt help the laugh that bubbled out of you, quiet, but real.
โWhat are youโฆ?โ
Joaquรญnโs voice fizzled to life in your ear, cracking the quiet like a crowbar to glass.
โAre you flirting right now?โ
You froze, the smile instantly tugging at your lips again despite yourself.
When you didnโt answer, he laughed.
โOh my god, youโre totally flirting right now! Itโs so bad, but you so are! Who even is this guy?โ
You turned ever so slightly, subtle as you could manage, and pressed a knuckle into your ear to mute him. Your cheeks warmed in tandem with Bobโs.
Bob blinked. โSorryโฆ did I, umโwas that weird?โ
โNo, no,โ you said quickly, maybe too quickly. โThat wasnโt you.โ
He just nodded, like your word was more than enough. Like you couldโve told him the moon was fake, and heโd say, huh, never really thought about that before.
You moved to take a seat across from him, the fireplace crackling softly between you like a low, slow heartbeat. The warmth of the flames painted him in golds and ambers, the flickering light catching the softness in his eyes and the loose fall of his hair.
You fidgeted with your fingers out of instinct. And across the fire, he mirrored the motionโthumb twisting around his knuckle, pinky tapping rhythmically against the inside of his sleeve. There was something strangely reassuring in that shared nervousness, like you were both waiting for the same storm to pass.
You let out a quiet breath, tension easing from your shoulders. โYou said you moved here? Like, New York?โ
โYeah,โ he said, nodding. His shoulders dipped too, visibly relaxing just a touch, like your voice permitted him to breathe. โIโฆ uh, I lived in Malyasha for a while. But Iโm from Florida. Born and raised. Whereโwhere are you from?โ
You tilted your head slightly, watching how intently he tried to keep eye contact and how quickly he broke it again. โI flew in from Washington.โ
โD.C.?โ he asked, and you nodded.
His eyebrows lifted, eyes wide for a split second. โWow. Do you work in the White House or something?โ
You huffed a laugh, smiling into your words. โSure. Something like that.โ
His head bobbed along with the answer.
โSo youโre likeโฆ a really important person here.โ
You laughed again, this time wider. Your teeth showed. It surprised you how easily you let your guard down. โI wouldnโt say that.โ
But he was smiling too, softer now. Less anxious.
โYou are,โ he said, more sure of himself now. โI saw the way people looked at you tonight. Notโnot that I was watching you or anythingโฆ just, itโs hard not to. Youโre, umโฆโ
You saw the moment he lost his words, saw them spill and scatter like marbles across a floor. His blush deepened, blooming across his cheeks in a full, unmistakable deep red colour. He ducked his head, eyes falling to his shoes again, and you watched him fight a shy, apologetic smile.
โโฆI can see why theyโd want your picture.โ
And just like that, your heart softened.
You leaned in a little, elbows resting against your knees. โThank you, Bob. Youโre really sweet, you know that?โ
Bob looked up again, startled by the compliment, his mouth parting slightly like he didnโt know what to say to that. You werenโt sure if anyone had ever told him that before, and if they had, you could guess they didnโt mean it the way you did now.
He didnโt belong here. That much was obvious. Not with people like Valentina, not with cold smiles and polished lies. Not with mercenaries, politicians, and millionaires who hide behind their money. You could see it in the way he sat too stiffly on a velvet chair meant for lounging, in the way he tugged at his sleeves or tucked his hands away when he felt exposed.
โWhatโre you doing in a place like this, Bob?โ
He blinked, tilting his head like he wasnโt sure what you meant.
You smiled, eyes squinting a little as you leaned forward more. โI mean, are you like, a sponsor? Investor?โ
The words didnโt even sound right on your tongue, not when directed at him. The image of him swirling champagne and talking stocks was so laughably out of sync with the shy guy currently pressing himself into the couch cushions like he wanted to disappear.
โI donโt think youโre here for the politics,โ you added, and there was a touch of something playful in your voice.
He chuckled softly, eyes crinkling at the corners. โMe? Gosh, no. I donโtโฆ I donโt do politics.โ He scratched the back of his ear, sheepish again. โThatโs Buckyโs thing. Iโm here for my friends.โ
And just like that, your whole world tilted.
Your smile dropped before you could stop it. A subtle shift, but you felt it everywhere: in your spine, in your lungs, in the weight of your hands resting suddenly still on your knees.
You straightened. Slowly.
โโฆYou know Bucky?โ
The question came quieter than you intended, and Bob mustโve heard the change, the sudden stillness in your voice. His smile faltered, and he went still, too, sensing the tension without understanding it. His posture shrank, as if unsure what heโd stepped into, as if trying not to take up more space than he already had to upset you.
He nodded, a cautious kind of affirmation. โYeah. Heโs my friend.โ
That stunned silence stretched long between you.
โIโฆ I know heโs your friend too,โ Bob added quickly, the words spilling out like he was trying to fill the void before it grew too wide. His voice was quieter now, softer around the edges, almost apologetic. โI heard you talking about him to Val, IโI thought maybeโฆโ
You werenโt sure why he kept talking. Maybe because you hadnโt said anything. Maybe because your smile had disappeared too fast, and he could feel the way the mood had shifted even if he didnโt know why. His nervous ramble wasnโt meant to hurt, you could tell that. But it did. It did because the moment he said Val, something in you knotted tight again.
The warm glow youโd felt around him moments ago started to dim, curling in on itself like a candle snuffed out mid-flicker. Your heart gave a small, stupid lurchโembarrassed at how quickly youโd let your guard down. Of course he knew Bucky. Of course he was close to Valentina. The pieces slid together too easily now, fitting into a picture you didnโt want to look at.
You tried to pull yourself back together, quickly and quietly. You reminded yourself this wasnโt supposed to be about comfort. It wasnโt about soft smiles or normal conversations or maybe asking someone out for a drink. You came here with a mission, no matter how personal it was. To find Bucky. To set the record straight. Thisโthis moment of peace with a stranger who felt safeโwasnโt supposed to happen.
He called her Val. Like they were friends. Like they knew each other beyond just work. Like he wasnโt just some shy, nice guy who complimented you under his breath and blushed when you smiled at him. Jesus, were you that easy?
A strange bitterness bloomed in your mouth. Not anger, more like disappointment. At yourself, maybe. For forgetting, even just for a second, what kind of place this really was.
You stood up.
The decision was sudden, impulsive, a small motion made louder by the way Bob flinched. His eyes followed you, something tentative and uncertain flickering across his face.
You reached for your earpiece, thumb brushing over the button to unmute Joaquรญn.
But Bob stood, too. Slowly, almost clumsily, like he wasnโt sure if he was supposed to follow you or stay where he was.
โDid Iโdid I say something wrong?โ he asked.
You froze. Your fingers stilled over the earpiece. You hadnโt expected that.
You turned, not quite facing him fully, but enough to catch the look on his face. His brows had drawn together, confusion etched faintly into his expression, and one of his hands was lifted just slightly, hovering in the air between you like heโd started to reach out and changed his mind halfway through. There were still several feet of space between you. The fire crackled low between you both, casting shadows across the expensive furniture and marble tiles.
โIโm sorry if I did,โ he said, voice smaller now. โI didnโt mean to upset you.โ
That stopped you. โNoโฆ you didnโtโฆโ You said, the words stumbling out, half-formed. You didnโt know why you tried to soothe him. Maybe it was the way his eyes had gone wide or the way he seemed to dread the thought of you walking away just when he was finally starting to settle into himself. It stirred something in you. Something that made your chest tighten.
You couldโve said never mind. You wanted to. Pretend his words hadnโt struck a nerve, hadnโt made your heart twist in your chest. But they did. It bothered you.
Bob blinked at you. โOh,โ he said, so gently it almost got carried off by the breeze.
A silence fell between you again. You wrapped your arms around yourself against the wind as you turned to look at him.
โWho are you, Bob?โ
He straightened, caught off guard. โIโm... Iโm Bob,โ he said. โJust... just Bob.โ
You tilted your head. โThatโs it?โ
He opened his mouth like he was about to say more, but nothing came out. His lips parted, then pressed shut again, the words retreating back into him like they were scared to be seen. He just shrugged helplessly. Like thatโs all he had left.
And yet he kept looking at you like he was begging you not to go. Not yet.
You sighed, bringing your fingers up to your temple, pressing cold skin to your warm forehead. There was a pulse pounding there now, dull and insistent.
โI justโฆโ You started, voice cracking faintly. โI came here looking for Bucky. I thought maybe I could get him to come home.โ
โHome?โ Bob asked carefully, his eyes soft.
โYeah. With Sam. With us.โ You hesitated, glancing through the tall windows behind him. The light inside spilled gold across the floor, where laughter echoed and people clinked glasses without a care in the world. Your eyes landed on the group youโd been avoiding all nightโBuckyโs new team, huddled together with drinks, grinning like it was just another night to celebrate.
It made your chest hollow out.
โEver since he joined Valentinaโs little fuckass team or... whatever this is,โ you said, gesturing vaguely toward the gala behind you, โeverythingโs just been so... shitty.โ
You looked back at Bob, surprised to find that heโd stepped a little closer. Just enough that you could see the way his jaw twitched, like he was working through something he didnโt know how to say.
โSorry,โ you muttered, suddenly self-conscious. โNot to, like, dump all that on you.โ
The cold bit into your arms. You rubbed them quickly, wishing youโd brought a coat.
โItโs not...โ Bob started, and then, more firmly, โItโs not a fuckass team.โ
You blinked. โSorry?โ
โThey saved me,โ he said, voice trembling just a bit. โLena. Bucky. The others. Theyโre my family. We... we take care of each other.โ
You stared at him, something icy curling low in your stomach. โYeah?โ
โYeah,โ he said again, earnest. โI know it probably doesnโt look like it from the outside, but... they gave me a chance when no one else would. They didnโt treat me like I was broken. They... saw me.โ
You wanted to believe that. You really did. But it felt like trying to swallow glass.
โRight,โ you muttered, too tired to argue. โI have to go.โ
You turned, reaching for your earpiece.
โWait,โ Bob said suddenly, like heโd only just realized this was goodbye. โWill I... will I see you again?โ
You paused, fingers still hovering near your ear. The balcony lights flickered faintly behind you, and the sound of the city buzzed low in the background, as if the world were holding its breath.
You didnโt turn around right away.
Part of you wanted to say no. Make it easy. Clean.
But when you finally looked back at him, at the boyish worry carved into his face, the way he stood there with his hands half-raised like he didnโt know whether to reach for you or let you go, you felt that ache again. The one that whispered that maybe, despite everything, he meant what he said. That maybe there was still something worth salvaging in the strange, quiet warmth youโd felt earlier. Something real.
And you desperately wanted it to be real. You wanted it to mean something.
โI donโt know,โ you admitted, voice barely above a whisper.
Bob swallowed. Nodded like he understood.
But his eyes lingered on you like he hoped the answer might change.

Morning filtered in through the blinds in thin, honeyed lines, striping the small apartment in soft gold.
The place had that that lived-in feel, trinityโs hoodie draped over a chair, Dennisโs boots abandoned by the door, maybe a sock somewhere in the living room. It was the quiet hum of a space that had seen a plenty of ordinary mornings just like this one.
Dennis was by the door, shrugging into his jacket, keys already looped around his fingers, halfway out before heโd even technically left.
From the kitchen, Trinity didnโt even pretend to be subtle as she watched him, leaning against the counter, in her robs, mug in hand.
โOh, wow,โ she drew out slowly, head tilting as her gaze dragged over him, amused and a little too pleased with herself. โLook at you.โ
Dennis didnโt look up. โWhat.โ
She took a slow sip of her coffee,โNothing, nothingโฆ just you actually made an effort today.โ
That made him, slightly confused and smartly wary, glance at her and for her her grin to widened.
โGod, you even put cologne on,โ she added, like sheโd just uncovered something incriminating. โCan smell it from here.โ
Dennis frowned faintly, like he hadnโt even realized. โI always use itโ
Trinity gave him a look so disbelieving it was almost theatrical.
โNo, you wear whatever deodorant survived the week and call it a day. Thisโฆโ she waved vaguely in his direction. โis effort.โ
He looked down at himself like maybe his clothes had betrayed him somehow. โItโs not effort.โ
โRight,โ she said dryly. โAnd Iโm the patron saint of minding my own business.โ
Dennis let out a quiet breathy laugh through his nose and reached for the coffee mug heโd left on the counter, taking a swallow mostly so he wouldnโt say anything stupid.
Unfortunately for him, Trinity Santos loved silence for the reason being, that it gave her room.
She pushed off the counter and went to pour herself more coffee,โSo what exactly is broken over there?โ
He shrugged and set the mug down. โHer sink, I think, she said the waterโs not coming out right.โ
โAnd of course,โ she said, voice laced with mock admiration, โyou became Katniss Everdeen.โ
Dennis rolled his eyes, catching the reference. โDonโt start.โ
โโDonโt start,โโ she mocked, โYou mean the super hot rad tech who just happened to need help and you just happened to volunteer?โ
โItโs just a broken thing.โ he waved a hand, already wishing he hadnโt said anything at all.
โA thing,โ Trinity echoed, nodding like that explained everything. โGot it.โ
โYeah, her sink.โ He turned away from her, moving to rinse out his mug with a little more focus than necessary.
Her expression softened into something far too sweet, dangerously sweet. โAnd tell me, Huckleberry, you heading over there to fix her plumbingโฆ or are you planning to service her pipes?โ
He grimaced, a faint flush creeping up his neck despite himself, at the thought. โSeriously?โ
โWhat?โ Trinity let out a quiet laugh,โYou practically set that one up yourself, and donโt act like the thought hasnโt crossed your mind. Because it definitely wouldโve crossed mine.โ
Dennis didnโt reply, mostly because he couldnโt, there wasnโt much he could say without giving himself away. The truth was, it had crossed his mind, more than once, different scenarios, different anglesโฆ more than heโd ever admit out loud, but he shut it down just as quickly every time.
For one, heโd been raised better than that and for anotherโฆ it wasnโt something that would ever, in this god green earth, actually happen.
You were friends, that was what mattered.
Sure, maybe he had an itty bitty crush on you, small enough that he could almost lie to himself about it, but then again, who didnโt? Half the people in the Pitt wouldโve lined up for a chance, and with the amount of options you had, with the way you could pretty much take your pick of anyone there, there was no world where itโd be him.
He just turned away, opening the cupboard to put his mug back while behind him, Santos kept going, because of course she did.
โYou know, Iโve gotta sayโฆ Iโm a little surprised.โ
He nudged the cupboard shut, the wood clicking softly. โYeah? About what?โ
โI just figured if you werenโt on shift, youโd be back at that widowโs farm.โ She gave a small shrug as she reached for the loaf of bread.
That made him slightly pause.
โI go out there to help Amy,โ he said, turning toward her, the explanation coming out smooth, rehearsed from overuse. โYou know that.โ
โMm,โ Trinity hummed, like she wasnโt entirely convinced. โAnd now youโre helping Y/N. At her place, on your day off. Bright and early.โ
Dennis exhaled quietly through his nose, like he could already see where this was going.
โItโs just a favor.โ
โJust nice to see you branching out beyond farmerettes, Huckleberry.โ Trinity said easily, not even looking up as she dragged a knifefull of butter across her toast
He shot her a look. โWhat does that even mean?โ
She kept spreading the butter, a small, knowing smirk tugging at her mouth. โMeans youโre diversifying yourโฆ charitable efforts.โ
Dennis huffed, shaking his head as he reached for his jacket, tugging it on like he could physically remove himself from the conversation faster.
โIโll be there, like, twenty minutes.โ
โRight, rightโฆโ Trinity nodded, finally glancing up at him. โSo should I expect you back before lunch, or are you planning to vanish into some kind of rendezvous bliss?โ
โโฆyouโre disgusting. Goodbye.โ He grabbed his keys, already backing toward the door.
โDrive safe!โ she called after him, completely ignoring that. โAnd take your time, no need to rush quality work.โ
The door shut a second later.
Trinity chuckled and took another bite of her toast, pleased as anything.
โOh, that boy is so not coming back soon.โ
And for once, it wasnโt just her running her mouth for the sake of it.
She knew you well enough to remember the way youโd sit next to her as she wrote up some charts, a few weeks back, arms crossed, trying to sound casual while bringing him up.
โHeโs justโฆ nice,โ youโd gone on, almost against your own will now at where Whitaker was with a patient, eyes narrowing slightly in thought. โBit quiet, doesnโt get in your business, and heโs got that wholeโฆ farm boy thing going on and, I mean have you seen his hands? Gawd almighty, Santos, theyโre rough, but not in a bad way, like he could fix anything, or...โ you cut yourself off, but not before your mouth curved just slightly, โyknow, hold you down without even trying.โ
All Trinity could do was stare at you as if youโve grown a third head and started speaking in tongues โEwโ
โDoesnโt talk too much, but he listens, like heโs actually paying attention to you, doesnโt need to be loud about anything.โ Youโd tilted your head slightly then, like you were studying something only you could see. โโฆand thereโs something about that whole rural thing.โ
You were circling an idea, turning it over, testing it, considering it, a predator deciding if something was worth the chase.
โRight,โ Trinity said slowly. โSo what Iโm hearing is you want to climb him like a tree.โ
Boy, did you.
And now he was in your house, which somehow made all of it worse or better, mostly worse but definitely better.
Dennis had shown up not with your coffee order already in hand, your coffee order, exactly right, because months back youโd mentioned it once in passing and apparently he was the sort of man who justโฆ remembered things like that.
Heโd stood there at your door looking unfairly good in a plain shirt and jeans, holding the cup tray, all casual like this was no big deal.
As though he hadnโt just arrived armed with caffeine, competence, and that quietly helpful thing he did that made you want to see him shirtless and pantless.
You had insisted, no, flat-out refused to let him touch anything, until he ate something first.
โSit,โ youโd told him, already pushing a plate toward him.
โIโm here to fix yourโโ
โAnd you will,โ you cut in, already halfway to the counter, โafter you eat. I didnโt wake up early and bake for it to just sit there looking pretty.โ
Heโd tried to protest again, of course, a quiet, half-hearted โIโm fine, reallyโโ that didnโt stand a chance against the look you gave him.
So he sat, and when he took that first bite of the jam spread croissant, and the sound he made, something almost like a groan slipping out before he could stop it, hit you straight to your core.
โJesus,โ heโd muttered, more to himself than to you, glancing down at it like he didnโt quite trust it. โThatโsโโ
โGood?โ youโd offered.
He looked up at you then, with those big, sad, oh so tempting blue eyes.
โYeah, really good.โ
You had to physically turn away under the excuse of grabbing a napkin because otherwise you mightโve jump him right there.
Now, he was on his back under your sink, which in hindsight, that had been the easy part, because now, he was on his back under your sink.
You leaned against the counter, arms loosely crossed, trying to look like you werenโt actively losing your mind.
He shifted slightly beneath the cabinet, one arm braced, the other working at something you couldnโt see.
โYouโve definitely got a clog in here,โ he said, voice a little muffled. โProbably buildup.โ
โMakes sense,โ you replied automatically but had no idea what he was talking about because your attention wasโฆ elsewhere.
His shirt had ridden up to show a strip of skin at his stomach, the light dusting of hair, the way his jeans sat low on his hips as he shifted to reach further in, by the time you noticed the veins, you were shamelessly wet.
Your gaze traced details you absolutely had no business cataloguing, like the flex in his arm, the quiet strength in the way he worked.
Sooner rather than later, much to your disappointment, he was done.
There was a final twist of something under the sink, and then he shifted, sliding out from beneath the cabinet and pushing himself up in one smooth motion.
You had exactly half a second to compose yourself.
He turned the faucet on, letting the water run and watching it drain properly, then he glanced at you, a small, satisfied smile tugging at his mouth as he stepped back and gestured toward it.
โAll good. Youโre set, my lady.โ
You couldnโt help it, you smiled back, a soft little laugh slipping out of you. What a geek.
โThank you, Dennisโฆโ
He shrugged it off like it was nothing, wiping his hands on a rag. โYeah, no problem.โ after a beat, he added, a little more earnest, โI mean itโif you need anything else, just let me know.โ
That was the opening you needed.
You hesitated for half a second, just enough to make it seem natural and said, glancing toward the living room like the idea had just occurred to you. โWellโฆ since youโre already hereโฆโ
He followed your gaze, brows lifting slightly. โYeah?โ
โDo you think you could help me set up my TV stand? Iโve been trying, butโโ you let out a small breath, gesturing vaguely, โโitโs just not happening.โ
Dennis huffed out a quiet laugh, shaking his head a little like heโd expected something like this.
โYeah, I can take a look.โ
โThank you,โ you said, already stepping back to give him space, gesturing for him to follow. โItโs in here.โ
You led him into the living room, where the box and scattered parts sat waiting.
โOkay, I gotโฆ this far.โyou said, pointing at the half-assembled stand.
Dennis took one look at it and huffed a quiet laugh under his breath.
โYeah,โ he said, setting his toolbox down, already crouching beside it. โI can see the problem.โ
You crossed your arms, mock-offended, though there was a hint of embarrassment tucked into it. โHey, I followed the instructions.โ
โIโm sure you did,โ he said, glancing up at you, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. โThey just didnโt do you any favors, huh?โ
You huffed a small laugh despite yourself. โNot even a little.โ
He shook his head, reaching for a piece, turning it over in his hands with that same easy focus heโd had in the kitchen.
โAlright, letโs fix it.โ he said easy, looking over at you with a grin.
And God, you had to physically stop yourself from biting your lip.
It should not have been this attractive, the whole capable-man-putting-things-together thing, and yet here you were, standing in your own living room trying not to stare at his hands again.
He worked with this quiet, steady focus, the same one he has at the hospital, like everything else fell away when he was doing something with purpose.
You were faintly aware he was talking, something about which piece went where, or why you thought the instructions were โbackwardsโ but it all blurred into background noise.
โYeah,โ you murmured at one point.
โMhm,โ at another.
Not a single coherent thought behind it because all you could really register was;
I'm going to fuck his brains out.
You gazed as he leaned forward slightly, muscles in his forearms tightening as he adjusted something into place, voice dropping as he muttered under his breath, focused.
There was a faint sheen of sweat starting to gather at his temples, just enough to darken the edges of his hair where it curled slightly at the nape of his necโ
โAlright,โ he said, giving the stand a small test push to make sure it was steady. โThat should do it.โ
You blinked, having been snapped out of your sightseeing.
โOhโalready?โ you said, a little too quick.
He glanced at you, faintly amused. โYeah. Wasnโt too bad.โ
Course he made it look easy.
Then he stepped over toward the TV without hesitation, hands settling at either side like heโd done this a hundred times before and with one smooth motion, he lifted it and turned, placing it carefully onto the stand.
Your attention shifted to his back.
The stretch of his shirt across his shoulders, the way the fabric pulled just slightly with the movement, the subtle shift of muscle underneath as he adjusted the TV into place, making sure it sat just right.
You exhaled slowly, trying very hard to act like you were not noticing any of that.
โGood?โ he asked, stepping back slightly, eyes flicking toward you.
You blinked again, dragging your gaze up to his face like you hadnโt just been staring.
โYeah, yeah, thatโs perfect,โ you said, a small grin slipping through despite yourself as you gestured beside you. โCome take a look yourself.โ
Dennis stepped closer, brushing past you just enough that you caught the faint scent of his cologne again. He leaned in slightly, eyes scanning the TV, checking the alignment, one hand coming up to adjust it just a fraction.
He nodded after a second, satisfied. โThat should hold just fine.โ
โYeahโฆ looks so good,โ you nodded, though your attention wasnโt really on the TV anymore.
Neither of you moved right away, until he stepped back first, putting just enough space between you to make it noticeable. He cleared his throat lightly, like he was shaking something off.
You frowned a little, tilting your head as you looked up at him, something softer slipping into your expression. โThank you, Dennis. Really, I donโt know what I wouldโve done.โ
He chuckled under his breath, one hand coming up to rub at the back of his neck, the other resting on his hip, just a little awkward now in a way he hadnโt been before.
โYou wouldโve figured it out,โ he said easily, though there was a hint of something warmer in his tone. โOr called someone who charges way too much for it.โ
You huffed a small laugh, but kept your eyes on him . โYeah, wellโฆ Iโm glad I didnโt.โ
โAnytime." He nodded once, almost to himself.
You shifted your weight, turning to face him properly, a small smile playing on your lips. โIโll have to repay you somehow.โ
His brows lifted slightly, the corner of his mouth tugging just enough to make you wetter than ever. He still looked a little unaware of the full effect he was having on you, which, honestly, only made him more delicious.
โYou already fed me,โ he said with a grin, like that should settle it.
You shook your head slowly and took a small step toward him.โThat doesnโt count.โ
Dennis blinked, grin slowly fading, a little thrown now, like he hadnโt expected you to push back. โNo?โ
โNo,โ you repeated, holding his gaze now, a bit more seductively than before. โThat was just me being a good host.โ
For a second, he didnโt say anything and just looked at you.
It was subtle, but you saw the moment he processed what you were trying to do, the shift in his expression, the way his attention sharpened and he straightened, like he was finally catching up to something that had been there for a while now.
โOh,โ he said after a beat, quiet.
You smirked lightly at that and took another step, now in his personal space.
โHow about dinner?โ you said, voice easy but edged with something a little more deliberate now. โWe can start with dessert, if you want.โ
Dennis flushed and let out a soft breath through his nose, one hand settling at his hip while the other flexed once at his side, like he wasnโt entirely sure what to do with it.
โYouโ er you donโt gotta repay me,โ he said, though his voice had gone lower now, less certain than before. โWasnโt a big deal.โ
You stepped in closer, up onto your tiptoes, just enough to close the space between you, your voice dropping to something lustful and meant only for him.
โMaybe not to you.โ
He stilled and you shifted just slightly, your hand lifting, a single finger brushing under his chin, guiding his gaze back to yours, lips hovered just a breath away from his.
โSo? Do you want dessert?โ you murmured, barely above a whisper.
Dennisโs blue eyes dropped to your lips for a second, then back to your eyes. He swallowed, visibly, and when he answered it came out low and a little rougher than before.
โYeah.โ
A small, satisfied grin tugged at your mouth.
โGood,โ you whispered, letting your lips barely brush his, enough to feel the warmth of him, enough to make him tremble. โIโd have felt terrible if I couldnโt show you just how appreciative I am.โ
Your lips where on his.
A shudder ran through Dennis's entire body, a full-body tremor of pure shock and want. He was holding his breath, you realized, his whole body coiled with a tension that was equal parts nerves and raw arousal.
You took control instantly, your mouth moving against his with practiced ease, tongue tracing the seam of his lips, coaxing him to open up, to relax. He followed your lead blindly, a soft, choked sound escaping his throat as you deepened the kiss, teaching him with your tongue, showing him how to move, how to breathe and boy was he a fast learner, perhaps a bit too fast and eager.
It was like a desperate, clumsy energy took over, making him kiss you back with a force that was more enthusiasm than skill, his mouth moving against yours with an almost frantic need.
It was all tongue and teeth and pressure, a messy, hungry kiss that sent a thrill straight through you.
One hand flew up to cup the back of your head, pressing you to him, and the other hand, after a moment of awkward hovering, landed flat and awkward against your ribs.
You grinned against his lips, a silent, wicked acknowledgment of his fumbling earnestness.
Your own hand, which had been resting at the nape of his neck, slid down to find his, were they were still stiff against your ribs, radiating a nervous heat. You wrapped your fingers around his wrist, feeling the frantic pulse beating just beneath his skin.
He let out a sharp, shaky breath against your mouth as you began to move his hand slowly and deliberately, guiding his palm down the curve of your side, over the dip of your waist.
His touch was light, hesitant, but he didn't resist, and you pressed his hand lower, over the swell of your hip, until his fingers were splayed across the flesh of your ass.
A choked sound, half-gasp, half-groan, rumbled in his chest.
His fingers, which had been so uncertain moments before, suddenly dug in, gripping you with a desperate, possessive force that sent a jolt of electricity straight through you.
He pulled you even harder against him, and you could feel the thick, hard ridge of his cock straining against his jeans. The awkwardness was gone, replaced by a pure, instinctual need to claim.
You broke the kiss, pulling back just enough to see his face.
His eyes were blown wide, dark and glassy with lust, his mouth slightly pink and parted as he stared down at you. He looked utterly wrecked, and you'd barely even started.
"Breathe, Dennis," you murmured, a small, satisfied smirk playing on your mouth.
"Right," he breathed, the word barely audible. "Sorry."
"Don't be," you purred, nipping at his lower lip.
Your hand moved with a slow, deliberate confidence, sliding down the firm plane of his stomach and your fingers pressing directly against the hard ridge straining against the denim of his jeans.
Dennis's entire body went rigid, and a sharp, choked gasp was torn from his throat, his eyes squeezing shut, his mouth falling open in a silent 'o' of pure shock.
You smirked, your thumb pressing down, rubbing a slow, firm circle right over the head of his cock through the fabric, but this is not what you want to do now.
You gave him a chaste kiss before gently pushing against his chest making him stumbled back a step, eyes widening slightly in surprise before he caught himself, his legs hitting the edge of the couch.
He sat down heavily, his gaze locked on you, looking up with an expression that was a mixture of awe and pure, unadulterated hunger.
You stood looking at him like a predator admiring its prey, a slow, deliberate smirk spread across your hands moved as you slipped the dress off your shoulders.
The same dress you had absolutely not chosen with this exact outcome in mind. Not at all.
It fell away easily, pooling at your feet, and for a second you just stood there, letting him look.
His mouth fell slightly agape as he took you in, standing before him in nothing but your pretty lace panties. The flush on his neck and cheeks deepened to a dark red, his gaze roaming over your body like he was trying to memorize every single inch.
He shifted on the couch, his hands gripping his own thighs, knuckles white.
You took a step forward until you were standing directly between his spread knees and looked down at him.
"Comfortable?" you asked, your voice a low purr.
He could only manage a shaky nod, his tongue darting out to wet his lips.
"Good," you murmured, placing your hands on his shoulders and leaning down, bringing your face close to his, your breath ghosting over his lips. "Because the real dessert is about to be served."
In one fluid, graceful motion, you sank to your knees on the floor between his legs, which made his breath catch in his throat. He stared down at you, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and raw, unfiltered lust.
With your eyes on him, your hands moved to his belt, the buckle clinking softly in the charged silence, you made quick work of it, then popped the button of his jeans.
His hips lifted instinctively, a desperate, needy motion, and you hooked your fingers into the waistband of his jeans and his boxers, pulling them both down in one smooth tug.
His cock sprang free, thick and hard and already leaking at the tip.
It was a beautiful thing, and the low, guttural groan that escaped Dennis's lips as the cool air hit him was music to your ears.
You looked up at him again, holding his gaze as you wrapped your hand around his hard, leaking cock. His eyes widened, his breath hitching in his throat as you began to stroke him slowly, your thumb smearing the bead of pre-come over the sensitive head. His hips jerked, a helpless, needy motion, and a low groan rumbled in his chest.
"This okay?" you asked, your voice a low, husky murmur.
He stared down at you with his mouth slightly parted and for a moment he seemed incapable of forming words, his mind completely consumed by the slow, deliberate movements of your hand.
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat.
"Y-yeah," he finally managed to choke out, the word a strangled, breathless sound. "Fuck, yes, more than okay."
A small, satisfied smirk tugged at your lips, your hand never ceasing its slow, torturous movements as you purred, "I'm just getting started."
You then leaned in, your breath ghosting over the head of his cock, and his entire body tensed, one of his hands gripping the edge of the couch so tightly his knuckles turned white, and the other was in your hair. You held his gaze, your eyes dark and full of promise, as you slowly, deliberately, swirled your tongue around the tip.
A choked sob of pleasure escaped his lips, his head falling back against the couch, his eyes squeezing shut. He was completely at your mercy.
"Fuck!" The word was torn from Dennis's throat, his entire body arching off the couch.
You set a punishing rhythm, your head bobbing, your tongue swirling around the sensitive underside of his shaft. You took him deep, the head of his cock hitting the back of your throat, and you swallowed around him.
The sound he made was pure, unadulterated ecstasy, a choked sob of pleasure that vibrated through his entire body.
He was completely at your mercy, his experience no match for your expertise. You were in control, and you were going to make sure he never forgot this.
You gave him a few pumps with your hand while you suck on the tip, could feel him getting closer, the frantic twitching of his hips, the way his fingers tightened in your hair, his breaths were coming in short, sharp pants, and then he started begging, his voice a ragged, desperate mess.
"Waitโ fuck... I need... I needโ" he gasped, his hips bucking wildly. "Please..."
You pulled back, just enough to let him breathe, but your hand never stopped its firm, rhythmic stroking. You looked up at him, a wicked smirk on your face, a thin string of saliva connecting your swollen lips to the head of his cock.
"Yeah, baby? What do you need?" you purred, your voice husky.
He groaned, his head thrown back against the couch as he fought for coherence. His eyes, dark and wild, found yours, and he gritted out the one word he could manage. "You."
Your smirk widened because that was the answer you wanted.
You leaned in and gave him one last, hard suck, a final, teasing taste that made his whole body jolt, before you rose gracefully to your feet.
You stood over him like a goddess of sex and satisfaction, and looked down at the disheveled, beautiful man you had just unraveled.
"Pull them down for me," you commanded softly, your gaze dropping to the scrap of lace covering your pussy.
He nodded, his movements clumsy with renewed urgency. He leaned forward, his hands shaking slightly as they hooked into the waistband of your panties, but instead of just pulling them down, he surprised you as he pressed his lips to your stomach, then lower, trailing open-mouthed kisses down your hipbone, down your thigh, as he slowly, reverently, peeled the lace from your body.
Once they were down around your ankles, you expected to take control again, to push him back and show him what came next, but you didn't get the chance because to your utter shock, Dennis took charge.
A raw, primal instinct seemed to take over.
He grabbed one of your legs, his grip firm and swung it over his shoulder, and before you could even process the sudden shift in power, he dipped his head and buried his face between your thighs.
The first swipe of his tongue was clumsy, but it was electric. A sharp gasp escaped your lips, your hands flying to his shoulders to steady yourself.
Dennis was a man possessed, licking and sucking with a desperate, hungry enthusiasm that was both messy and utterly divine. He was plainly inexperienced, yes, but he was an eager participant, his movements becoming more confident, more targeted, as he listened to the sounds you made, as he felt the way your body responded.
Your fingers tangled in the messy strands of his hair to hold him closer, nails scraping lightly against his scalp as a soft, breathless whimper slipped past your lips when he found a spot that made your knees shake.ย
His grip on your hips tightened, knuckles white with the effort of keeping you steady as he lost himself in the taste of you, his low moans vibrating against your skin in a way that sent shivers down your spine made your head fall back.ย
Dennis pulled back for a split second, lips glistening, eyes dark with hunger and a flicker of uncertainty.ย
"Am doing this rightโฆ right?" He panted, voice rough with need as he turned his face to kiss your leg.
You nodded quickly, thumb brushing over his flushed cheek.ย
"Yes, just keep going, baby," you whispered, voice thick with desire.
That was all he needed to hear. Dennis dove back in, his movements got bolder, he licked a slow stripe up your slit, then pushed his tongue inside you, making you cry out and for your free leg to wobble beneath you.
You could feel the heat coiling in your lower stomach, building faster now.ย
Your free leg started to shake again as his fingers dug into the meat of your thigh draped over his shoulder and his other hand splayed across your lower back to yank you closer, holding you firmly in place as he worked you toward the edge.
When you finally tipped over the edge, right after another deep, rumbling moan of his vibrated up through your core, spurred on by your desperate whimpers and the way you fisted his hair to yank him closer, your body seized tight.ย
A ragged, broken cry tore from your throat, but he didnโt let up, no, Dennis kept licking and sucking, relentless, until you were weakly pushing at his shoulders, overstimulated to the point of trembling but still aching for more of him.
Only when you finally pleaded his name did he pull back. His lips were slick, his breath hot, and when he looked up at you his eyes were dark, and still hungry.
โYou taste so good,โ Dennis murmured, voice rough. He pressed a kiss to the inside of your thigh, then nipped gently, making you shiver. โCan I do that again?โ
You let out a weak, breathless laugh and shifted forward to straddle him, his hard dick was grazing your slick folds as you leaned down to kiss him, tasting yourself on his mouth while your fingers threaded into his hair.
After a beat, his hands found your ass again, gripping like he couldnโt help himself.ย
You pulled back just enough to meet his gaze and whispered, โMaybe on round two. Right now, I need you inside me.โ
You rose a few inches, guided him to your entrance, and then dropped down on him in one smooth motion. Dennis hands tightening on your hips as the stretch made you both brake at once, his guttural groan mixing with your breathless moan as pleasure lit up your whole body.ย
"Fuck, Dennis," you breathed, rolling your hips experimentally, feeling him throb inside you. "You feel so good, soโฆ fuckingโฆ big."
His eyes fluttered shut for a second, his grip on your ass tightening almost painfully.
ย "God, you're perfect," he groaned, his voice wrecked.
You leaned forward, lips brushing his ear as you started to move, slow, deliberate grinds that had him panting beneath you.ย
"You like that, baby?" you whispered, nipping at his earlobe. "You like feeling how wet I am for you? How perfectly you fill me up?โ
He nodded frantically, his hips bucking up to meet yours. "Yesโfuck, yes,"ย
You picked up the pace, riding him harder now,
"I've been thinking about this all day," you moaned, head falling back as pleasure coiled tight in your belly. "Thinking about how good your cock would feel inside me, how you'd stretch me open and make me scream your name."
"Please," he whimpered, and the sound of him begging made you clench around him. "Please don't stop."
"I'm not stopping until you fill me up, Dennis," you purred, grinding down hard. "Not until I feel you come inside me."
Dennis moaned loudly, his head falling back against the couch, and the sight of him, completely undone beneath you, drove you absolutely crazy.
"Look at you," you gasped, rolling your hips harder, chasing that delicious friction. "Bet youโve neverโฆ youโve never been with a girl like me, huh?โ
His fingers dug into your hips, his breathing ragged, and you could feel him twitching inside you, close, but not quite there yet.ย
Then, to your surprise, he suddenly shifted.ย
His hands gripped your waist and he hoisted you up as if you weighed nothing, making you yelp as he maneuvered you both. In one smooth motion he had you on your back on the couch, your legs falling open as he settled between them.
He pulled back just long enough to yank his shirt over his head and toss it aside, and the sight of him, chest heaving, muscles taut, eyes dark with need, made your mouth go dry.
"My turn," he growled, and then he was pushing back inside you, deeper this time, the new angle making you cry out.
"Oh fuckโDennis!" you moaned, your hands flying to his shoulders, nails digging in as he started to move. "Yes, just like that! don't stop, please don't stop."
He set a relentless pace, each thrust hitting that perfect spot inside you as he panted against your neck. "You feel so fuck-ing good, honeyโฆ S-so perfect."
You moaned, your legs wrapping tight around his waist, pulling him deeper.ย
"God, yes, fuck me harder, Dennis, I want to feel you for days." Your back was arching off the couch.ย
He groaned at your words, and you felt his rhythm falter for just a second before he found it again, harder this time, more desperate. His grip on your hips tightened like he was holding on for dear life, and the intensity in his eyes was almost overwhelming.
"You're soโfuck," he panted, the words breaking apart as he thrust into you.ย
He wasn't smooth about it, but god, the raw need in every movement made it even hotter.
"You feel so good inside me," you whimpered, nails dragging down his back. "So fucking good, Dennis, please don't stop, baby.โ
His breath hitched and he buried his face in your neck, his hips snapping forward again and again. You could feel him trembling slightly, like he was barely holding himself together.
Your hand slipped between your bodies to touch yourself, and the moment your fingers found your clit, you clenched hard around him.
"Ohโoh fuck," he gasped against your skin, his whole body shuddering. "You'reโI can feelโ"
"I'm so close, keep going, just like thatโ" you moaned which only intensified when he bit you.ย
It took three more thrusts for you to come, and when you did, it hit you like a tidal wave.ย
You went silent but your whole body was seizing up as pleasure crashed through you, your walls clenching tight around him.
The second you did, you felt his teeth sink into your shoulder, not hard enough to really hurt, but enough to make you gasp, as he came with a muffled, desperate groan against your skin. His hips stuttered, grinding deep as he spilled inside you, his whole body shaking with the force of it.
"Oh shiiโoh fuck," he panted against your neck, his grip on you bruising as he rode out the last waves of his orgasm.
You were both trembling, breathless, tangled together on the couch. Your legs were still wrapped around him, holding him close as the aftershocks rolled through you both.
"Holy shit," you breathed, your fingers threading through his hair, still trying to catch your breath.ย
He lifted his head just enough to look at you, his face flushed and his eyes still glazed with pleasure.ย
"Yeah, that was... fucking incredible," he breathed.
He leaned down to kiss you, soft at first, then deeper, and you returned it eagerly, a breathless laugh escaping against his lips as you pulled him closer, letting his weight settle onto you.ย
"Damn right," you murmured, fingers tracing lazy patterns down his spine. "How am I supposed to go to work tomorrow and face everyone when I know exactly how you feel inside me?"
His eyes widened slightly, a flush creeping up his neck that had nothing to do with the exertion.
Dennis groaned, half-laughing as he buried his face in the crook of your neck. "Oh, don'tโI'm never going to be able to focus during rounds now."
"Wonderful," you teased, nipping at his earlobe. "Every time you see me at work, I want you to think about this. About how good you felt buried inside me."
He shuddered against you, his arms tightening around your waist. "You're going to kill me, I'll be trying to read X-rays, and all I'll be able to think about isโ"
"Me riding you on my couch?" you finished with a wicked grin.
"Exactly that," he admitted, lifting his head to meet your eyes. The flush on his cheeks deepened. "I'm so screwed."
You laughed, reaching up to kiss the tip of his nose. "Yeah well, at least you'll be able to walk normally tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be feeling this for the next week."
Dennis's eyes widened slightly, a mix of pride and concern flickering across his face. "Is thatโI mean, are you okay? I didn'tโ"
"I'm okay," you assured him, brushing your thumb along his jaw.
"I.. uh, I might've... left a mark," he mumbled, glancing at your shoulder.ย
You turned your head to look, catching a glimpse of the reddened impression of his teeth on your skin and a slow smile spread across your face.ย
"I donโt mind," you said, meeting his gaze again. "Now I'll really have something to remember this by."
His breath caught, and you watched his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed hard. "You're not mad?"
"Mad?" You laughed softly, tracing your fingers down his back. "Dennis, that was hot as hell. Who would've thought you're a biter?"
He huffed a laugh and buried his face against your neck again, carefully avoiding the bite mark this time. "I can't believe we just did that."
You shrugged, a satisfied smirk playing on your lips. "I didn't see today ending any other way. I knew I was going to fuck you since you gave me your last Reeseโs pieces."
Dennis lifted his head to stare at you, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Seriously? But that was months ago!"
"Yep," you grinned, running your hands through his hair. "You gave me your last piece of candy without even hesitating. I knew right then I was going to end up in bed with you eventually.
He laughed, shaking his head in amazement. "All this time... over chocolate?"
"Believe it," you said, stretching slightly beneath him and wincing at the pleasant ache. "Now, I don't know about you, but I could really use a shower. Want to join me? Maybe after, I can actually make us some lunch.โ
"That sounds perfect actually," he murmured, pressing a kiss to your palm.
"Good," you smiled at him before reluctantly starting to shift. "But fair warning, I might need help standing up."
Extra:
By the time Dennis walked into the apartment, it was pushing 9pm.
He tried to be quiet about it, keys set down gently, door eased shut instead of slammed, but he really shouldโve known better.
Trinity was in the living room, curled up on the couch with takeout spread out in front of her, TV flickering lazily in the background. Her eyes slid over to him the second he stepped in.
She didnโt say anything at first, just looked at him, taking in the slightly rumpled clothes, the faint flush still clinging to his neck, the general vibe of a man who had not, in fact, spent โtwenty minutes fixing a sink.โ
She hummed, deeply smug. โMustโve been one hell of a sink.โ
โOh, shut up.โ
A/N:
Hello, hello, hope you enjoyed my attempt to create smut <3<3<3
( SYNOPSIS ) โ your pervy college teacher canโt help himself at the slightest reminder of you after class.
( WARNINGS ) โ no spoilers to the movie lol. perverted college teacher ryland!! all his students are adults!! teacher!ryland. student!reader.

After a long and demanding week of managing students, whether itโs asking for extensions, helping with papers, or going back and forth with students, Ryland arrives at what he considers the most rewarding part of his day. Grading papers.
It gives him a rare moment of quiet. He can sit undisturbed, focus entirely on his work, and just relax. As he works through a portion of the stack, his attention lands on a familiar name written boldly at the top of a page in unmistakable glittery blue ink. The sight draws a small, involuntary smile from him. Itโs become a trademark, one he recognizes instantly.
Over the years, heโs noticed a pattern in himself. With each new class, thereโs always one student who captures his attention more than the others. The reasons are always the same. The year before, it was a quiet exchange student who rarely spoke and kept to herself. The one before that was a quiet, loser type student who remained largely to himself. This year, itโs you, and you are so different.
Youโre quick witted and confident, usually volunteering in class discussions with ease. You carry yourself with a natural sense of assurance that draws others in. Youโre sociable and well liked, with a big circle of friends, and even those outside of it seem to hold you in high regard.
Your personality is just as evident in your writing. Each page reflects a part of your huge personality. Your handwriting is bubbly and expressive, your iโs are dotted with small hearts, and the margins are filled with doodles of puppies or stars. The use of bright, glittery ink adds a touch that makes your work immediately recognizable.
However.. there are noticeable inconsistencies in your academic performance. Your grammar is nowhere to be found, punctuation is sometimes forgotten, and abbreviations appear more than the full words. While your work carries personality and effort, you definitely arenโt a top student.
But, he doesnโt really mind. He skims through your report, barely pausing at the mistakes, and grabs his red pen. He underlines a random sentence and writes a quick โAmazing writing!โ beside it. At the top of the page, he marks an A+ and adds a small smiley face.
He knows it isnโt right. He should be grading your work honestly, not letting you fall behind academically. But he can already picture your reaction. The way your face would fall, the way your shoulders would slump if you got the grade you actually earned. It would break his heart, so Ryland lets it slide.
He lets out a quiet sigh, staring down at your paper a little too long. Without even realizing it, he finds himself panting, his hand over his lap rubbing at his growing bulge. Thinking about a student like this makes his stomach twist with guilt, but the guilt doesnโt make the excitement go away. If anything, it only heightens is.
Small visions of you and him together flood his mind. Driving you back to your dorm after class, your hand in his. Catching your eye during lectures and holding it just a knowing second too long while the other students sit oblivious. His thoughts keep building, and he can feel himself getting worked up over it, stuck between knowing itโs wrong and not being able to help himself.
He canโt stop thinking about what it would be like to offer you extra tutoring, because God knows you need it. The idea plays out too clearly in his head.. Sitting across from you in an empty library, the silence heavy around you, his hand slipping into your pants while you try to stay quiet. He doesnโt even notice when he unbuckles his own pants, his hand moving under his boxers almost on its own.
He lets out a sharp huff, frustrated with himself and his own perversions. It feels ridiculous, getting this worked up over something as small as your glitter blue ink resting against the paper. The only thing he can focus on now is getting it over with, forcing his body to stop so he can get back to work.
His head tilts back against the chair, eyes fixed on your usual desk, the small blue glitter pen you accidentally left behind, like a reminder. His breath catches as he hunches forward, a quiet gasp slipping out as he finishes into his own hand. Itโs messy and shameful, something he knows he should feel worse about, but in the moment, he doesnโt seem to care.
After he finishes, he glances down at the mess in his hand. Without really thinking, he lifts it and smears a small amount onto the bottom of your paper, watching it soak into the page and leave behind a faint, off white stain along the edge.
He lets out a quiet, almost disbelieving smile, shaking his head at himself. He canโt ignore how wrong it feels, how perverse it is. Marking your paper like that, leaving something behind where you might see it. His own dirty little secret.
He cleans his hands with a few tissues, tossing them into the trash before picking your report back up. With a soft sigh, he places it onto the graded stack. There are still plenty of papers left to get through, but now he feels steadier.. A smile on his face and a small stain on his pants as he gets back to work.
