or we hold everyone accountable? just bc you don’t experience it first hand doesn’t mean you can’t be inclusive and aware??? it’s not hard to write a poc/woc/lgbtqia+ character (especially with as many resources as there are out there). i’m not black but i could absolutely write a black character, i would reach out to people with those experiences and i would do my research. i’m not holding woc/poc creators more accountable than white creators. that’s unfair. everyone is accountable. saying ignorant white woman is a cop out that poc don’t get, they don’t get to say they can’t write white people?? if they did white people would be outraged.

i'm a white european woman, who also dresses in a more feminine way i'd say and isn't skinny, but i hate super specific descriptions in character x reader fanfics, bc not everybody is going to be able to see themselves in those details. like, leave it vague i beg lmao like i can't even imagine how hard it is for women of color to enjoy reading those fanfics if the fem reader is always described a certain way.

also i get the whole ditzy!reader thing. i don't think there's anything wrong with attributing generic canonically "feminine" traits to the reader, but there's a line between that and making them stupid lol. it gets to a point tbh. like the reader can be generally kind or shy or whatever without being a stereotype on legs. and the male characters can be gentle to the reader, without treating them like they are made of glass or whatever. it does fall inside a slippery slop of some sort of conservative ideal that we should be wary off.

also i agree that certains outfits descriptions can make you drop a fic, bc no wtf i'm not wearing that...

I think there can be more nuance in the conversation when it comes to nicknamed characters. As someone who reads and enjoys these stories themselves - they’re not nicknamed kitty or cherry or petal or whatever as a form of infantilization or identity. It ties directly into inside jokes previous plot points and is commonly used in fic writing for authors with multiple characters to create tags and identities that are easy for readers to follow.

By reducing them to their surface level nickname, we’re eliminating the world building these authors put in time and effort to do. And when they’re posting their work for free and receiving little in return, yes this can be hurtful.

You’re 100% entitled to your opinion on your blog, but I think understanding the layers to this conversation is important.

i get what you’re saying! and i agree to an extent!! i don’t think writers owe anyone anything!! you do this shit for free and you can write whatever you want!! my opinion does not matter, i’m mature enough to recognize that but i’m also going to say my opinion bc i want to, if you post online you’re going to get opinions, that’s the truth.

I believe the whole characterization started good natured, as a way to help keep the story a certain reader focused and tags organized, i get that i do. but it’s definitely devolved into a way to make readers heavily characterized (why are we giving reader insert full on personalities/styles/nonnegotiable traits, that’s an oc at this point) and infantantilized.

not so much sunshine/bubby as they’re usually happy go lucky or whatever, also not my cup of tea as it’s not super realistic but to each their own!

I’ve noticed specifically with kitty/puppy/petal/ditzy/barbie that is their way of letting you know that this characterization is a completely dumbed down reader who has little to no personality other than oh i’m so helpless and my man!!! he’s so hot!!! and i’m so pretty and cute!! which is.. fine i guess. not my cup of tea and perpetuates the notion that women should act that way, or women need men. i know it’s fiction but at this point in what’s happening in the world, i can’t help but feel as if it is that deep.

i’m not trying to reduce them to their surface level nickname, lots of the writers are doing that themselves. the readers personality revolves around that nickname. (also if a man ever called me kitten in front of a bunch of friends and family i would be sooo grossed out).

I applaud writers who make worlds where their reader has a whole personality and traits and a nickname but call it what it is, an oc that you say is reader insert bc it does better on tumblr than ocs do.

first of all, ME, I!!!! never said the writer was ai, i made a general statement about how i have waited a long time for off campus to gain traction and i’m tired of ai. that’s all i said. i didn’t acknowledge the fic at all, didn’t say the anon was right. stop taking shit out of context. i’m not back tracking i’m being truthful. the ai thing was never at the writer on my part! i don’t think they use ai, i literally followed up with i didn’t finished the fic so idk if the 3s thing was true in that. so idk guys do what you will.

second, do you know the definition of infantilizing. look it up. that’ll help clear everything up. i already said i’m not talking about this directly anymore so talk about it with someone else.

i’m happy you see them this way and everyone is entitled to see them how they want but that is absolutely not how they are described in the books! allie is typical blonde blue eyed white girl, hannah is brunette green eyes white girl, and i feel like EK was just riding the wave of let’s make this one character (sabrina) racially ambiguous but they’re actually just white! train that every author was on in like 2016-2017 (and honestly what they’re still on now)

i usually love to do moodboards! but when i do, i make it my business to not add only white women-i actually don’t add any at all LMFAO tbh! and when it comes to the character description at the bottom, i try to make it neutral as possible. i want it to still be x reader, but with a twist. but something that wouldn’t completely take away from the reader’s actual personality. if this makes sense?
