Callum recoiled at the sight of Lukas, who stood a full nine inches taller than him, almost running face first into his chest. Hearing the clatter of the phone, Callum looked down, moving to grab the phone, " Sorry Samara! Sorry Lukas! You were just early, I thought you were some robber" Callum apologized, handing the phone back to Lukas so he could say goodbye to Samara, feeling awful at the chance of how loud that clatter was for her ears.

He was blushing, deeply as he took in the scene, only to realize his state of undress, and the food about to overcook on the store, " Oh! One second, let me just," He scrambled...only a little bit, as he ran back to the kitchen, pan to an off burner, turned off the stove before scrapping the only slightly burnt egg onto his toast, with some ham and tomato, he looked back, " I did just make some for myself, but did you want a plate too? I could make you sometime, let me just go get changed," Callum said as he turned back to the entry to head up to his room.

a hearty laugh erupted from his chest at the realization, lukas supposed it would have been courteous to warn their housemate that he was returning earlier than expected. "that's quite alright," he was quick to reassure, pressing the phone back to his ear to quickly mutter a goodbye and well wishes for safe travels to his wife, concluding the end of the call with his usual 'vi ses snart, min älskling', which earned him the affectionate retort he yearned for.

with bags left abandoned in the foyer for the time being, he trailed after the young man with his usual bordering uncoordinated gait. strides long, but shoulders hunched in a habitual gesture of trying to shrink himself alongside those smaller than him. one of samara's favorite ways to refer to him, with affection of course, was an ungainly giraffe. whilst she tended to flit about with more grace.

"I truly ought to have made an effort to reach out at some point while I was abroad to check how you were settling in, it is such a large estate. even I, on occasion, find myself a bit disoriented," he started to ramble, a spark of joy lighting his eyes at the prospect of having genuine company to occupy the hours until his wife returned. "just last month I walked right into a room I hadn't even realized was in use, isn't that the wildest thing. in my own home!" he exclaimed, laughter bubbling up as he reveled in the humor of his own words. lukas had yet to fully process Callum's state of undress, but if anything, a sense of relief washed over him as he observed Callum settling in with such ease. "don't worry about me, i was able to grab a light meal at the airport lounge before I arrived. but i will put on a fresh pot of coffee, if you wish to partake. "

It was a blessing that Callum was able to stay at the Nilsson Estate while he attended medical school. His first four years of university being a real pain to get through with dormitory life and Callum was starting to love the seclusion of the private estate. It was summer, Callum was given access to move into his room while Lukas and Samara were off on their own summer plans, and Callum was expecting them back for at least another week. So, when Callum was cooking his breakfast in a pair of loose boxers and a tank top, summer pop filling the emptiness of the vast kitchen, he didn't even hear the others arriving until he heard the door slam shut.

Of course, his first thought wouldn't be to Lukas and Samara, but to someone else getting their way over the secured gate and fence, most likely in some Nicholas Cage-Style Ocean's Eleven to steal something of historical value from The Nilssons. Grabbing the first thing he could find, Callum crept towards the foyer, rolling pin in hand, ready to strike.

THE MELODIC HUM of his wife's voice, filtering through the receiver of the phone wedged between his ear and shoulder, was, as always, a welcoming trill that wrapped around him like a warm embrace. lukas hummed along to her instructions as he hefted his suitcases from the trunk of the rented car, ascending the stairs that led to the entrance of their home. she was not expected to return for several more days, their carefully laid plans to reunite in cairo regrettably unraveling as her expedition stretched on while his concluded far too soon. yet, it mattered little; they had traversed the summer months in solitude, each lost in their own adventures, a pattern as familiar as the changing seasons.

absence and distance, as they say, made the heart grow fonder. they were both secure and content enough in their marriage to continue pursuing their careers and know they could return to home base, where stories of their exploits and adventures awaited to be shared, enriching the bond they cherished. "yes, darling, I shall certainly consult with the gardeners. but, you must remember how remarkably resilient the azaleas are! i'm sure they've flourished in our absence!"

lukas fumbled with the front door, his feet betraying him as he wrestled his suitcases across the threshold, each step a clumsy dance. admittedly, if lukas was being honest, in the hustle and bustle of traveling and archiving across the globe it just might have slipped his mind that they were hosting their dear friend's son at the nilsson estate. his wife, bless her, had not forgotten and was just about to remind him to check in with their house guest, when the house guest in question whipped around the bend brandishing a kitchen utensil like a weapon. alarmed, lukas's hold loosened on the phone. it clattered to the ground as he reared back. a beat or two of silence passing as both parties processed the scene.

"oh, callum! good morning!" lukas chirped, as if the entire scenario wasn't alarming and unexpected. "is that the rolling pin?"

Still, her protective nature swelled in the next breath, spurred by Avett's flushed cheeks and the precarious hold on the drink glass. There were far too many watchful eyes among them to be having this conversation so flagrantly, ones that would relish the chance to sensationalize and distort the details of their dispute on the front page of the tabloids.

Elle was too sentimentally impaired to serve as an anchor in the gales, or rather too resilient to any suggestion of dependency, and instead subconsciously took on the function of an unwavering port. A reliable refuge he could always seek when the tempests grew too intense.

"I like it best when you act out," the remark laced with subdued mirth, but Elle easily caught on that the mood was anything but lighthearted. As soon as he was mostly situated in the backseat, she smoothly slid in beside him and signaled to the driver to get going. She had been on the way back to her place when he called, and she still intended for that to be her ending destination. "And if you had someone else to call?" she challenged, fingers gliding down the expanse of her exposed calf until she reached the buckles of her heels. "That almost sounds like I was an afterthought, I'm insulted." Her bottom lip rounded in a faux pout, even though she knew that wasn't what he meant at all.
