John Mueller said to ignore the links on spammy sites and focus on the unnatural links. Of course, you can have unnatural links on spammy sites and/or good sites - but Google wants you to focus on the unnatural links.

He said "you can get an unnatural link from a good site & you can get a natural link from a spammy site."

Focus on if a link is unnatural, not where the link is placed.

To be 100% clear: DO NOT get unnatural links from any type of site.

You can get unnatural link from Business Insider for example because you contacted writer and offered him something in exchange and he concealed your link in his next article and you can get natural link from a spammy porn website that took your image that you released in public domain but you got the credit as the author.

Unnatural = any kind of influence on the linker.

Google's Terms of Service do not allow the sending of automated queries of any sort to Google system without express permission in advance from Google. Sending automated queries consumes resources and includes using any software (such as WebPosition Gold) to send automated queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage ranks in Google search results for various queries. In addition to rank checking, other types of automated access to Google without permission are also a violation of Google Webmaster Guidelines and Terms of Service.

At Google, first priority is to help users find relevant, engaging answers for their search queries. High-quality structured data must not create a misleading or deceptive experience for search users. It should be an up-to-date and accurate reflection of the topic and content already found on the page, such as text, images, and videos. For example:

A page about a dinner recipe may use recipe structured data to list the ingredients and describe the cooking steps.

Markup should not be used to hide content not visible to users in any form, since it might create a misleading or deceptive search experience. For example, if the JSON-LD markup describes a performer, the HTML body should describe that same performer.

Content must not promote pedophilia, bestiality, sexual violence, violent or cruel acts, or targeted hatred.

Google performs algorithmic and manual quality checks to ensure that structured data meets relevancy standards. In cases where Google see structured data that does not comply with these standards, it reserves the right to disable rich snippets for a site in order to maintain a high-quality search experience for users.

"Nofollow" provides a way for webmasters to tell search engines "Don't follow links on this page" or "Don't follow this specific link."

Originally, the nofollow attribute appeared in the page-level meta tag, and instructed search engines not to follow (i.e., crawl) any outgoing links on the page. For example:

Before nofollow was used on individual links, preventing robots from following individual links on a page required a great deal of effort (for example, redirecting the link to a URL blocked in robots.txt). That's why the nofollow attribute value of the rel attribute was created. This gives webmasters more granular control: instead of telling search engines and bots not to follow any links on the page, it lets you easily instruct robots not to crawl a specific link. For example:

How does Google handle nofollowed links?

In general, Google doesn't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes Google to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in Google index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if the URLs are submitted to Google in a Sitemap. Also, it's important to note that other search engines may handle nofollow in slightly different ways.

If the site is spam, tell us about it! Google takes spam extremely seriously, and investigates reported instances. These reports are submitted directly to Google webspam team and are used to devise scalable solutions to fight spam.

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank can dilute the quality of search results. Participating in link schemes violates the Googles Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

If you believe the site is infected with malware or malicious software, please report it to Google so Google can take action as necessary.
