That sounds harsh, I know. But hereâs the thing nobody tells you about local SEO. You donât need to be a marketing guru or spend thousands on ads. You just need to stop treating your Google profile like an afterthought.
Let me back up.
Iâve been helping small businesses with their local search presence for about seven years now. And honestly, I still see the same mistake over and over. People set up their Google Business Profile once, get a few reviews from their mom and her book club, and then walk away. They figure the work is done.
But thatâs like planting a garden and never watering it. Sure, a few hardy weeds might pop up, but youâre not going to get anything worth eating.
So if youâre a beginner or even someone with a little experience under your belt, this is for you. Weâre going to talk about why your profile feels like a ghost town, how to bring it back to life, and what actually matters for getting found by people who are ready to buy.
The biggest reason your profile feels empty
You know what I hear most often? âI donât have time to mess with that Google thing.â And I get it. Running a business is exhausting. Youâre dealing with inventory, customers, payroll, and that one employee who keeps calling in sick. The last thing you want to do is log into yet another dashboard.
But hereâs the problem. When you ignore your Google Business Profile, youâre letting Google make decisions for you. And Google doesnât know you. It doesnât know that your bakery has the best sourdough starter in the county or that your mechanic actually explains whatâs wrong with the car instead of just handing you a bill.
Google just sees a blank space. And blank spaces get filled with whatever the algorithm thinks is relevant, which is usually nothing good.
Let me give you a concrete example. I worked with a plumber in Austin last year. He had a profile that was technically set upâphone number, address, hours. But his photos were three years old and showed a truck with a different logo. He had six reviews total, and they were all from 2019. He wondered why his phone wasnât ringing.
I told him to spend one afternoon updating his photos, responding to every single review, and adding a few posts about what he was actually doing that week. Not hard stuff. Just a picture of a clean job site and a note that said âWeâre booking into next week, so call ahead.â

What actually goes into a profile that works
I want to walk through the pieces that matter most, but Iâm going to do it without the usual marketing jargon. No âoptimize your listing for maximum visibilityâ nonsense. Just real stuff.
First, your business name. This sounds basic, but youâd be surprised how many people get it wrong. Your name on Google should match your name on the door and your name on your website. If youâre âMikeâs Auto Repairâ on the sign but âMikeâs Automotive Servicesâ on the web, Google gets confused. And a confused Google doesnât rank you well.
Second, categories. Google lets you pick a primary category and a few secondary ones. Donât just pick the first thing that pops up. Think about what people actually search for when they want you. If youâre a pizza place, âpizza restaurantâ is fine, but âItalian restaurantâ and âdelivery restaurantâ might catch different traffic. Be specific but donât overdo it.
Third, your description. This is where most people write a boring paragraph that sounds like a press release from 1995. âWe are committed to providing exceptional service in a timely manner.â Thatâs not a description. Thatâs a napkin.
Instead, write like youâre talking to a neighbor who just moved in. Say what makes you different. Mention the thing youâre proud of. If your pizza uses a secret family recipe, say that. If your massage therapist uses hot stones and actually listens to you, say that. Keep it under 750 characters, but make every word count.
Fourth, photos. This is the one that people skip the most, and itâs the one that matters the most. Google profiles with fresh photos get way more clicks than ones with stock images or nothing at all. Take a picture of your storefront. Take a picture of your best dish. Take a picture of your team smiling. Then do it again next month.
I know it feels weird to take pictures of your own business. But think about it from the customerâs side. Theyâre looking at three different plumbers on their phone. One has a blurry logo. One has no photos. One has a clear shot of a van and a friendly face. Which one are they calling?
The part about reviews that nobody talks about
People obsess over getting reviews. And you should, absolutely. But thereâs a piece that gets overlooked. You have to respond to them.
I know, I know. It feels awkward to write back to a five-star review. âThanks for the kind words, glad you liked it.â Thatâs fine. But the real magic is in how you handle the bad ones.
Look, every business gets a bad review eventually. Someoneâs going to be mad about the wait, or the price, or the fact that their coffee was too hot. Thatâs life. But hereâs the thing. How you respond to a bad review tells future customers more about you than the review itself.
If you get defensive and argue, people see that. They think, âThis person doesnât listen.â But if you respond with something like, âIâm sorry we didnât meet your expectations. Weâre working on getting faster during the lunch rush, and Iâd love the chance to make it right,â that changes everything.
It shows youâre human. It shows you care. And Google actually pays attention to that. Profiles with active responses tend to rank better because the algorithm sees engagement.
So donât just collect reviews like baseball cards. Talk back to them. Even if itâs just a sentence.
Posts and updates and why they matter more than you think
Hereâs a weird thing about Google Business Profile. It has a little social media feature built in. You can post updates, offers, events, and even product highlights. And most people never use it.
I get it. Youâre already posting to Instagram and Facebook. You donât want another platform to manage. But hereâs the twist. Those posts show up right in the search results, often before people even click through to your website.
So if youâre running a special, or youâre closed for a holiday, or you just got a new shipment of something cool, put it on your profile. It takes five minutes. And it keeps your profile from feeling stale.
Think of it this way. When someone searches for your business, they see a little snapshot. If that snapshot shows a post from last week, they think youâre active. If it shows nothing, they think you might be closed. Or worse, they think you donât care.
And honestly, thatâs the biggest thing. People can tell when a business is phoning it in. A profile that gets updated regularly feels like a business thatâs alive. A profile with no activity feels like a business thatâs just going through the motions.
The one thing that ties it all together
Iâm going to tell you something that sounds a little contradictory. You can do all of this stuff and still not get found if youâre not patient.
Local SEO doesnât move fast. Itâs not like a Google ad where you turn it on and get calls in an hour. Itâs more like planting seeds. You update your profile, you respond to reviews, you add photos, and you wait. Then a few weeks later, you start seeing a little more traffic. Then a few months later, youâre showing up in the top three.
Itâs slow. But itâs also permanent. Once youâre in that top spot, you donât have to fight as hard to stay there. You just have to keep showing up.
So if youâre feeling frustrated because your profile isnât doing anything, take a breath. Go back and check the basics. Is your name right? Do you have good photos? Are you responding to reviews? Have you posted anything this month?
If the answer to any of those is no, you know what to do.
And if the answer is yes, but youâre still not seeing results, give it a little more time. Sometimes the algorithm just needs to catch up. But it will, especially if you keep doing the work.
A quick note about the stuff you donât need
Thereâs a whole industry of people selling local SEO services that promise instant results. Theyâll send you a PDF, a dashboard, and a monthly bill. And most of it is fine, but most of it isnât necessary.
For a local business, especially one thatâs just getting started or trying to get better, the Google Business Profile is the single most important thing you can do. Itâs free, itâs simple, and it works.
You donât need a fancy tool. You donât need a consultant. You just need a phone, a little bit of time, and the willingness to show up.
And honestly, thatâs the part that makes me feel good about this. Because Iâve seen businesses that were barely hanging on turn things around just by paying attention to this one thing. Not because they had a secret strategy, but because they stopped ignoring the front door.
So go take a look at your profile. If itâs a ghost town, you know what to do. If itâs already looking good, keep it up. And if youâre somewhere in between, thatâs fine too. Just start with one thing. A photo. A review response. A post about what youâre doing this week.
It doesnât have to be perfect. It just has to be real.
