Open Bionics adds superhero appeal to prostheses for kids: Historically, those born without a hand or have one amputated can choose prosthetic devices that focus on realism and, for a steeper price, fine motor control. Open Bionics has unveiled several new designs for the youngest of prosthesis owners, and paired small size with kid appeal. Swerving away from realism, these prostheses are literally modeled […] http://dlvr.it/CNfcwB
Our latest designs!
I built this Star Wars robotic hand concept for my friend Joel at Open Bionics. It was a quick turnaround time of only two evenings. This helped them pitch to Lucasfilm/Disney on making licensed robotic hands for amputee children.
Disney loved the pitch and now they’re building licensed Marvel, Disney and Lucasfilm robotics. So damn cool.
Massive congratulations to Joel and the team!
Check out this awesome Star Wars concept art for our next bionic hands that Tom Flavelle created for us in just two evenings!

Nicolas had to have his hand amputated after a work accident in 2002. Today we fit him with our 3D printed hand. Together, we're going to make better low-cost bionic prosthetics. "I do this because I want to see change. I want to see the world change," - Nicolas.

Open Bionics: UK startup creates custom fitted 3D printed bionic arm for less than £1,000
By Anthony Cuthbertson in Singapore , Video by Sho Murakoshi
A UK startup has created a custom-built bionic arm using 3D printing technologies for under £1,000 - a fraction of the cost of other bionic arms currently on the market.
Bristol-based Open Bionics showed off one of its creations at the Smart Nation Innovations conference in Singapore on Wednesday (22 April).
“We wanted to make low cost bionic hands and a really good way to do that was through 3D printing and other 3D technologies like 3D scanning and 3D modeling,” Samantha Payne, chief operating officer at Open Bionics, told IBTimes UK

Grace please tell why do you hate prosthetics?)
It’s not that I hate Prosthetics, It’s just that I have no need for one. I was born with one hand and I feel that it’s an important part of who I am and I would never cover it up. For me, the only thing I would get out of wearing a typical prosthetic is that it would make me look “normal” - and I have absolutely no interest in looking normal at all. Prosthetics do help a lot of people in many ways, other than to blend in, but I haven’t ever found the need for one. However I have said yes to a few prosthetics due to the fact that they basically look cool. I have recently worked with Open Bionics where I got to try out a ‘Bionic arm’ and I also have an awesome arm ‘metal and feather warrior’ made by The Alternative Limb Project. Now I think these are awesome! I love fashion and art- and I feel these fit straight into that category. I also love the fact that they point out that I’m different in an awesome way- but I still would never wear one on a daily basis- I have no reason too.I do have a realistic looking limb too incase I ever need it for an acting job (such as being a zombie, or biting my own hand off or something), but I never wear it, ever.I hope that answers your question :)
