Democrats have a major edge when it comes to support among female voters, but they have struggled to lock down another key voting bloc: Latinos.
Issues, not frustrations, are the best way to coalesce voting power.
āWhen I remember that December is coming, I get anxious. Ā We pay rent at the end of the year and we donāt have it. Ā Weāre saving all we can but weāre only halfway there. Ā My husband sells kabobs but itās not going well. Ā Iām selling bananas to help out. Ā My children are wearing torn school uniforms. Ā I can only afford books for some of them. Ā I prioritize by who will get in the least amount of trouble with their teachers. Ā The smallest one doesnāt have any books right now, because I need the oldest one to get high marks. Ā I donāt know what Iāll do if we get evicted. Ā But I bounce back. Ā Iām a happy person. Ā And all of the shopkeepers around here are my friends. Ā We keep each other distracted. Ā We play jokes on each other. Ā We make each other laugh. Ā And we share what we have. Ā Some of them are drivers, and if they drive out to the province, theyāll bring back food for me. Ā So life can be good. Ā Things are manageable. Ā And Iām fine as long as I stay busy. Ā I only withdraw when I remember the challenges I have.ā Ā (Accra, Ghana)
Hopefulness, in spite of it all.

Yesterday, USA Gymnastics hosted its selection camp to help choose the five-person team for the upcoming world championships in Doha. I say āhelp chooseā because the results from this competitionāor any competition for that matterāarenāt truly determinative of who will be named or not. Final team composition will be decided behind closed doors by the selection committee and announced today.
Overflowing with excellence.

āMy father wants me to work in government, but I think there are plenty of problems we can solve ourselves. Ā So Iād rather be an entrepreneur. Ā Two issues we have in this country are erratic power and excess trash. Ā So recently Iāve been dreaming of a waste-to-energy plant. Ā It could be a solution to both problems. Ā Iāve been researching on the Internet for months. Ā The technology exists. Ā But this morning I had a meeting with the electric company, and they told me the power supply is currently stable. Ā There isnāt a market for extra energy. Ā So Iām feeling a little disappointed. But Iām going to explore other ideas. Ā Iām also researching methods to manufacture furniture with leftover sugarcane fiber. Ā I just want to do something about all this waste. Ā It makes me so angry. Ā Our gutters are filled. Ā Our bins are overflowing. Ā Iāve been carrying this trash for a mile because thereās nowhere to put it. Ā And nobody feels responsibility for the problem. Ā In the village where I grew up, everything was clean. Ā Because everyone viewed the land as their own. Ā I wish weād view our entire country like that. Ā Personally, I donāt want anyone calling Ghana dirty.ā (Accra, Ghana)
May he be the rising tide that lifts all boats.
āI was eighteen years old. Ā I went out one night with a male cousin and his friends. Ā I felt safe with him. Ā But he gave me a drink and I started to not feel like myself. Ā He took me home to his house. Ā It was dark inside and I could hear people moving around. Ā I heard murmuring in the shadows. Ā I tried to lock myself in the washroom. Ā But they beat down the door. Ā It lasted all night. Ā They took turns. Ā I was still a virgin when it happened. Ā I had goals for myself. Ā Iād started reading at a very young age. Ā I wanted to go to school. Ā But that night everything changed. Ā I didnāt leave my bedroom for months. Ā I wasnāt going to tell anyone. Ā But unfortunately for me, I got pregnant. Ā I was forced to tell my family. Ā My father didnāt believe me. Ā He said: āIf youāre old enough to get pregnant, youāre old enough to live on your own.ā Ā He kicked me out of the house. Ā He told me: āYouāve used your body once. Ā You can use it again.ā Ā I had to beg on the street. Ā Iād go for days without eating. Ā I hid in the bushes outside my house and begged my siblings for food. Ā But they avoided me like I was a disease. Ā I had to abort the baby. Ā I wasnāt mad at the child, but I had no choice. Ā I was completely alone. Ā That was twenty years ago, and I survived. Ā Iām financially comfortable now. Ā And maybe Iāve found some peace. Ā But Iāve never healed. Ā I donāt want anyone in my life. Ā I got married once but I hated the sex too much. Ā Even then I felt alone. Ā Iāll always live like I have nobody. Ā Iāve made a few friends, but in the back of my mind, Iām on my own. Ā Because I donāt want to feel vulnerable. Ā I donāt want to feel weak. Ā I donāt want to cry. Ā I donāt ever want to need anyone again.ā (Accra, Ghana)
