I know it's a little late but you know what they say, better late than never. Art is subjective. It plays on the emotion of the audience and the past experiences of the viewer. But art does not need to be confined. It doesn't need to be inside a shiny building with people gawking at it all day. Post modern art is the mold breaker. It says that anything can be art if you let your creativity off its leash. The examples in the article were powerful and also very personal to the artist that created them. My personal favorite was this piece by Do-Ho Suh. I've said it for years. No one is above me and no one is below me. We all need to work together to create better lives and a happy world. We are all equal and no one is above anyone else.

This documentary is a good visualization of what it means and what it takes to be a professional performing artist. It shows the emotion, the heartache, dedication, and the immense toll it takes on the individual. Marina’s art is very conceptual and odd. Hey let’s go to a museum and squeeze between two naked people. Not something I would come up with. But the best part of her work is that she isn’t making it for anyone but herself. Marina makes art for Marina, and it perfectly encapsulates what she feels. I enjoyed all the reactions to the last exhibit in the film and how they described this warm loving feeling from sitting across from her. Maybe she knew that people needed that. Maybe she understood that not everyone has someone to pay attention to only them and give off that vibe of comfort. 

This brief history recap of performance art sheds an interesting light on the roots, ideals, artists, and their goal. The goal of breaking the mold of traditional art and museums. These artists were punk rock before punk (and rock) were even conceptualized. Starting riots, challenging the establishment, and even the most metal description of taking down museums I’ve ever read, “We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind," it declared. "With the manifesto, we establish Futurism because we want to free this land from its smelly gangrene of professors, archaeologists, cicerones and antiquarians… from the numberless museums that cover her like as many graveyards.”

Honestly I’m surprised that performance art isn’t older than what the essay claimed. I guess that all depends on what you’d consider art though; like wouldn’t a court jester be considered an artist in a way? 

This protect was actually really hard to decide on what I was doing. I'm a video nerd and all these ideas popped into my head about what to do but, I settled on this. I wanted to make something mesmerizing and relaxing as well as visually interesting. I ended up making the glow for the edges intensify with the beats of the song and I think that helps move the eye to new places. The mirror effect is naturally pleasing to the eye and helps create new effects in the symmetry of the smoke elements.

Time and motion are critical pieces to any piece that involves video or performance art. Different mediums require different methods to create compelling artwork that will be enjoyed by the viewer. I really enjoyed the example of Laurie Anderson and her ice skates. It makes me wonder just how much research she did to find out how fast or slow the ice would melt beneath her feet. As well as plan out how many songs and at which tempo to play them. It seems that she was fully engrossed within her work and made it something that was important to her. This idea of a realtime art piece is fascinating but even more so is when you look closely at “timelapse” methods of capturing art. For instance in the piece mentioned in the book “Fashionably Late For The Relationship”, the performer takes seven hours to drink a glass of wine. But the real people around her moved at normal speed. Quicken the pace of the footage and she moves in real-time while everyone around her is a blur. Time and motion, when executed correctly and in direct correlation to artwork can go hand in hand with creating something fascinating.
