Two-year-old Albert Apsassin feeling the spirit at National Indigenous Peoples Day in Camrose, Alberta.
Babies doing the Thing with their grownups will never not be an immediate and loving reblog.
This is also important because until 1951, Indigenous kids were not allowed to dance at pow wows. It was illegal for them to participate. This is not only heartwarming, but an act of defiance against the ongoing oppression and genocide sanctioned by the Canadian government.
"There is nothing wrong with adults living with their parents for any reason and it's actually the norm in huge parts of the world."
and
"People should be able to afford to live independently if that's what they want."
are statements that NEED to coexist.

I do not celebrate death on principle but I do find it interesting that Charlie Kirk died via the thing he advocated for. Like who’s writing this political novel we’re living in. The symbolism’s a bit heavy handed if you ask me.
He was basically pro school shooting and then got shot in a school. Like. I mean.
And he was debating someone about gun violence while it happened. 1940s sci-fi levels of heavy handedness.
He got shot while answering a question about the numbers of mass shootings in America, too. His last words were literally "gang violence"
I don’t believe in karma but if I did I’d say that’s a pretty good sign that he’s about to be reincarnated as a mosquito.
The Y-Axis isn't that bad. Plus they have precise figures for every 2 years on the graph itself. This isn't a misleading graph.
The improvement is actually greater than this graph shows, since while house fires more than halved, the US population increased by 51% from 220 million to 332 million.
The number of house fires per 1000 people per year went from 3.289 to 1.023, a 69% reduction.
nice.
nice
Peer review, this was also my experience
I'm not contradicting the point about how many people smoked but it's over-simplifying what issues have caused fires in the past. MANY things changed, including:
the materials that furniture cushions and upholstery are made of is now flame-retardant, where before it was highly flammable. Dropped ash from a cigarette no longer sets the foam in the cushions alight.
the materials that pajamas are made of is now more flame-retardant, and is required to be so with children's pajamas in particular. Nylon is VERY flammable, old polyesters are also VERY flammable. You know when those got popular? The 20th century. You know how many children DIED? Lots. Which brings me to the most important list item...
Most heating is no longer open flames of fireplaces or gas space heaters that often had only a minimal cage over the OPEN FLAME. Now most people have forced-air or baseboard heaters. Even space heaters are electric now, and while the coils CAN catch fire, it's far less dangerous than an open flame.
All heaters, electric blankets, and other things that heat up sold now switch themselves off automatically after a certain period of time. Many more use ceramic heating elements instead of metal coils or bars, which is even safer. Even ovens switch themselves off automatically.
All of the above changes are due to how many people fucking died in house fires.
When a fire happens, they don't just put it out; they have fire detectives that figure out why the fire started and they put that in a report, and they keep track.
This data is used to design new safety regulations and prove they need to be made law.
Just bringing it up since I don't see it in a quick trawl of the notes: I remember a thread on here a few years ago about how homeowners before 1990 or so did way, WAY more home DIY -- especially electrical DIY -- and that's largely died out after Home Ec classes first stopped teaching that as a topic, then phased out of high schools entirely.
There were many horror stories in the notes from professional electricians finding some boomer dad's cross-wire job and asking "How in the lickity split did this home not burn down before now?!"
I love not playing along
"she's gained a lot of weight lately" "oh, good for her"
"on the wrong side of 40" "huh, which side is that?"
❗️I am not playing along with you❗️
"She's on wrong side of 40" What, you'd rather she was dead?
forced caretaking as a trope i think is like cocaine to people who know they need to be taken care of but have mental blocks in the way like yeah please do gently force me into a state of vulnerability so my body learns it is a safe thing to feel around you
This has gotta be a hit with the girlies who have always wanted something terrible to happen to them just so people realize they're in more misery than their outward appearance lets on
Genuinely so angry I can't live in the places I grew up because they are fundamentally too expensive for me to go home.
I miss San Diego. I miss Monterey. I miss my home so much every time I go back and visit my parents. But living in the place they live, in the place I grew up, is so wildly expensive that it might as well be Narnia. All I want to do is go home, and I simply can't. There is something fundamentally wrong with the world.
The number of people who are reblogging this just naming the homes they can't live in anymore... It's fucking heartbreaking. I know this is easy to see as "millennials and Gen Z upset they can't live in fancy areas", but... it's not that. It's that we want to live where we grew up, because those are the places we love. It's that a lot of us want to live in the same place as our LITERAL FAMILY, because having a community is so important and so many people of our generation are being priced out of having family nearby to help if we're on good terms with them. We can't even be close enough to our families to go over for a meal. It's that so many homes that could have been for normal rent or up for sale are now being held by fucking short-term rental AirBnB/VRBO GHOULS, so tourists can visit the places we consider home. I don't know why the idea that "if you grow up in a place, you should be able to afford to live in that place as an adult - not in the same neighborhood as your parents, even, but in the same CITY OR REGION, CLOSE ENOUGH TO VISIT YOUR FAMILY" is so absurd. You should be able to escape your family, yes... you should be also to stay near them without having to LIVE with them. You should be able to grow up and find a partner to live with and get pets and maybe have children and still not have to move hundreds of miles from your family. But this is what so many of us are being forced to do now. I think we should focus on this the same way conservatives fixate on the birthrate. If anything is destroying families, maybe it's this.

I just sent this to my husband and his response was “you can’t put a price on that” uh, yeah you can, they just did. 🙄
Judy Brady Syfers wrote ‘I Want a Wife’ in 1971. It holds up.
My mother used to mutter “I want a WIFE” angrily from time to time.
Later, after my parents split up and my mom’s bff’s spouse died, mom’s bff moved in. Mom would come home from work and the house would be clean! Dinner would be ready! Laundry done! Homework checked!
She called me up, delighted, a few weeks into it. “I was right! I DID want a wife!”
i remember the blissful 14 months when me and my friend shared a nanny, and coming back into the living room to find she had spontaneously tidied up the extreme chaos. That must be what it’s like, being a man, that you can just walk away from some mess to get ready for work, and when you come back somebody else has dealt with it without any physical or mental effort from you.
I think about this essay all the time
just a reminder that these prices are from 2014
In usd today a housewife is worth 278,431 and 14 cents.
Just so you know
This is reminder to check up on your own mental health.
OK thanks
The laugh that just erupted from me was ungodly.
I knew outsourcing all of our banana factories would come back to bite us in the potassium.
That's it. No more depending on other countries. The USA must become the Banana Republic (voice speaks fast in my earpiece) I have just now learned terrible things about Guatemala
I've heard it too many times to ignore it It's something that I'm supposed to be

no actually i don't think antivaxxers' kids should die from a disease. i don't think gun advocates' kids should die in school shooting. children dying is bad actually, even if they're children of people you don't like.

since the yearly "certain medications can cause heat intolerance" PSAs are out in full force, let us fondly remember last year when I was at Pennsic (big ass medieval recreation event) and our group was tearing down our giant tent lodge we use for our kitchen and dining hall. and there's a part at the very end where the roof is sort of on the ground, but still tented on a pole in the middle. and someone has to go under there to unhook the roof from the pole. but it's hot as fuck in that part since it's been baking in the sun for two weeks, so it's called "Satan's asshole". which resulted in somebody VERY solemnly telling me, "going into Satan's asshole is NOT a job for somebody on SSRIs"
fuuuuck i just realized that the future idealized version of myself cant exist without current me being the catalyst for change and doing hard things. has anybody heard about this
