i also don’t think the issue is simply that he’d rather save money, although i do think that would probably be a bonus. i think it comes down much more to control. one of the biggest themes throughout dex’s life is that he’s constantly trying to create stability in environments where he’s never really had any. his apartment is meticulously organized, he follows routines, he dresses neatly, and so much of his emotional regulation depends on keeping those routines intact. letting someone else cut his hair means giving them complete control over something that’s literally attached to him. for some people that’s just an ordinary errand, but for someone like dex, i think it would feel much more significant than that.

a haircut is actually an incredibly vulnerable experience when you stop and think about it. you’re sitting down while someone stands behind you with scissors or clippers only inches from your face and neck. you can’t fully see what they’re are doing, they’re constantly touching your head, asking you to tilt it in different directions, and you’re expected to just sit there and trust them. for someone as hypervigilant as dex, i can’t imagine that being comfortable. throughout season 3 he’s almost always aware of his surroundings. he’s watching people, tracking exits, paying attention to movement around him. voluntarily putting himself into one of the few situations where he has almost no control over what’s happening doesn’t really fit with how i interpret his character. i also think the environment itself would be overwhelming for him. a busy new york barbershop or salon is full of conversations happening all at once, buzzing clippers, music playing, hairdryers running, people walking behind you, mirrors reflecting movement from every angle, and someone repeatedly touching your face and hair. i think all of that together would probably become overstimulating very quickly.

because of that, i’ve always imagined that if he ever did try going to a barber after leaving the army, it probably only happened once. i can picture him researching the place beforehand, reading reviews, sitting outside in his car watching who goes in and out, figuring out when they’re least busy, and mentally preparing himself before even walking through the door. that’s just how i see his brain working. he likes predictability. he likes knowing exactly what to expect before putting himself into unfamiliar situations. but then once he actually sat in the chair, i don’t think he’d enjoy it. maybe the barber kept trying to make small talk. maybe they touched his head without warning to reposition it. maybe they cut one section slightly shorter than he wanted. none of those things would necessarily be a disaster individually, but i think together they’d make him decide it simply wasn’t worth doing again. from that point onwards i can imagine him buying a decent pair of scissors and an electric razor, teaching himself how to cut it properly, maybe even spending hours researching different techniques until he found a routine that worked consistently.

that’s another reason i think his season 3 haircut looks the way it does. i don’t think he’d sit down every month and give himself a full haircut. i actually imagine he’d constantly maintain it instead. if he noticed one side looked slightly longer before leaving for work, he’d trim that section. if a piece of hair wasn’t sitting how he wanted, he’d snip it. over time those tiny adjustments would naturally create the slightly uneven look he has during season 3. it doesn’t look messy, but it also doesn’t have the clean precision of a professional haircut. it looks practical. lived in. maintained little by little rather than completely redone every few weeks.

i also think his relationship with his hair changes throughout different periods of his life, and this is where i start moving more into headcanon than canon lol. i’ve always imagined younger dex having longer hair than he does as an adult. not dramatically long, but probably around below his ears. we know at least one or even both his parents likely struggled struggled with addiction and instability, so i don’t imagine regular haircuts would’ve been a priority. then when he was sent to the boys’ home, his appearance would’ve stopped being entirely his decision. the institution would’ve decided when his hair needed cutting. then later the army takes away even more autonomy because military regulations determine exactly how long his hair can be. for years of his life, somebody else is making those decisions for him.

that’s why i think learning to cut his own hair after leaving the army would’ve been surprisingly meaningful, even if he never consciously thought about it that way. for maybe the first time in his life, his appearance would’ve been completely his responsibility. nobody was telling him how it had to look anymore. nobody was scheduling haircuts for him. nobody was deciding for him. something as ordinary as trimming his own hair becomes another part of rebuilding a routine that’s entirely his own. i think that’s something dex values a lot more than he probably realizes.

his facial hair actually tells a similar story throughout season 3. when we first meet him, he’s always clean-shaven. his suit is immaculate. his hair is tidy. everything about him communicates discipline and routine. but as fisk slowly dismantles his emotional stability, his appearance starts changing too. the stubble gradually grows in, and i’ve never interpreted that as only meaning time has passed. though the stubble growing realisticly as the episodes go on is very cool. but to me it’s visual storytelling. he’s no longer keeping up with the routines that once grounded him. he’s sleeping less, he’s becoming more isolated, he’s spending nearly all of his emotional energy trying to survive fisk’s manipulation, and basic self-care starts slipping away. i don’t think he consciously stops shaving because he suddenly doesn’t care how he looks. i think it’s because he’s falling apart psychologically, and his appearance quietly reflects that before he ever says a word about it.

excluding his military days because he probably had a buzzcut, and wilson bethel had that haircut in general kill (2007) when he was 23yrs old. though, how wilson looks in JAG (2004) is how dex would’ve actually looked like during his service in 2005, because of the year of when it was filmed and wilson bethel’s age of 21 (though i personally believe dex was born in ‘86 instead of ‘84) though dex would be 18.

born again actually made me think about this even more because once dex is institutionalized again, he loses control over those routines. realistically he wouldn’t have access to scissors or razors, so every haircut and every shave would depend entirely on hospital staff or prison staff. i’ve always thought it would’ve made sense if his hair had been longer after spending eight years in the psychiatric hospital because he wouldn’t have been maintaining it himself anymore. his appearance would’ve been determined by whatever the institution considered acceptable rather than what he personally preferred. even though the show didn’t really go in that direction, i like the symbolism behind it because it mirrors something that’s happened throughout his entire life. whenever dex loses his autonomy, one of the first things he loses control over is his own appearance. (hence the daredevil suit, and the bullseye season one suit)

i also don’t think he’d ever intentionally grow a beard. we’ve never really seen him with more than stubble, and i think that’s because he’d hate the feeling of it. i’ve always imagined facial hair would probably become overstimulating for him after a certain point. it would feel itchy, uneven, and distracting, so whenever he actually has control over it, i think he’d shave regularly. that’s why i like how season 3 uses his stubble as storytelling. it isn’t there because he suddenly likes having facial hair. it’s there because he’s no longer functioning the way he used to. even something as simple as whether he’s shaved that morning becomes another way of showing us where he is mentally.

i’ve always loved thinking about these tiny details because they’re the kinds of things that remind me dex isn’t just “bullseye.” before he’s an assassin or an fbi agent or a comic book villain, he’s still someone who has to wake up in the morning, get dressed, shave, brush his teeth, cut his hair, and decide how he wants to present himself to the world. i think those ordinary routines mattered to him far more than they probably do to most people because they gave him a sense of predictability and control in a life where so much else had always felt uncertain. ironically, something as small as cutting his own hair ends up reflecting one of the biggest themes of his character: trying to hold onto whatever little pieces of autonomy he has left.
