One small thing: emailing or calling your MP
The government's recent loss in the Supreme Court means that it it can't now take Britain out of the EU without consulting Parliament. Legislation to trigger Article 50, the provision that allows a country to leave the EU, has been drafted and put before Parliament. The process of this makes it way through the House of Commons and the Lords is complicated but one small thing you can do right now is to call or email your MP and encourage them not to vote for this legislation. Some Labour MPs have already indicated that they will not vote for the legislation; two shadow ministers have resigned because they refuse to; the Lib Dems and SNP have indicated that they will also oppose. The vote is scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening.Â
You can find your MP by entering your postcode into theyworkforyou.com, which will also give you an email address for them. Here's an email script you can use:
--Dear [Mr/Ms] [Last name] MP, I'm writing to urge you to vote against the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill. I am one of your constituents and I believe strongly that Britain must not leave EU, especially now. Britain's membership of the EU over the last thirty years has been shown to be a net benefit: socially, culturally, and especially economically. As Europeans, British people have become part of something greater than themselves. In 2012, every British person - as a citizen of the EU - won the Nobel Peace Prize, as recognition of how shared markets and free movement of people had made war in Europe impossible. As fascist parties rise to power across the Western world, the UK cannot at this time opt out of the protection and support afforded by its membership of the EU. The June 2015 referendum was purely advisory and it is clear to follow that result blindly - especially now, as Britain's relationship with the US seems in doubt - would be catastrophic. For these reasons, I urge you to vote against this legislation. Yours sincerely, [name] The vote is on is scheduled for Wednesday night (1 February). If you can, send this email right now - it may make a difference.
