if it just wasn’t meant to be
i realized we weren’t meant to be
a while before we went our separate ways.
but that’s how long i tried to change the ending.
i poured love into us,
tried to tip the scales in out favor,
said:
look at all these wonderful things about us.
look at how we laugh at the same jokes
and know how to touch one another
and want the best for each other.
and fate shook her head.
took my hand into hers,
said:
but look at how you are straining in your own skin,
look at how you bite your tongue every day,
look at the distance already there.
look at how it grows.
but we love each other,
i said.
fate signed,
my dear, no amount of love
can make two mismatched pieces together.
not unless you mutilate them into something
they never were.
