Y'all, marriages in the U.S. aren't religious. That's added stuff. I have no idea what religion, if any, the woman who married my husband and me was. Adam Sandler's got some civil certificate saying he's a marriage officiant, that's all. Religious leaders usually get these, judges get them all the time, and the people who perform marriages at city hall have them. Lots of Elvis impersonators in Vegas do too. It's one of the awesome things about our country.

The marriage license is what makes you married and only once it’s signed and filed. You can do it right when you get it with the clerk at city hall, you can have your officiant sign it and file it after the ceremony, but marriage in the US is civil and anything outside of the civil license is optional and your officiant does not have to be a religious authority and that is good because that is the basis by which we legally have marriage equality in the United States!!!!!!!!!

the unbelievable antipathy the American people seem to have for the idea of a female president (or another black president...) is making me reevaluate the treatment of biden during his term and the re-election squabble. i do think people were afraid of him dying in office for no other reason than that Harris would become president. which does explain why people had no similar concerns about trumps age or cognitive ability
