The night was winding down, and Fu Hua sat before a fire, a stick before the pit. As heat slowly enraptured the gooey marshmallow, she would hum. She was at peace. That was, until a familiar figure would drift closer out of the shadows.

"Who's there?" She called out, her tone rather sweet. "I'm just making some s'mores and uh, I've got more than enough to share, if you'd like to join me!" Despite all that had come before, that nerve in meeting someone new still managed to find itself tickling the end of each sentence. A soft sigh at the hesitation, before her eyes widened. The realization of who was approaching hit harder than any foe she'd ever faced.

"Aponia..." she whispered, her stick lowering closer to the bonfire. The golden goodness would burn over, blackened and charred like the wood fueling the flame. The state of her snack isn't on her mind, however. Her old friend is.

(Realizing that Fu Hua would probably have a breakdown at seeing any of the flame-chasers but like don't worry about it yk)

SIMULATIONS HAD NOT THE NECESSITIES OF HUMAN LIMITS, & thus, the drawl of shuddering wind across dark skies had not summoned forth the thought of retreating back home to unceremoniously end the night. or maybe, instead, the simple thought of having somewhere to retreat was the catalyst of discipline's aimless wandering. sand crushed beneath platformed sandals, moonlight caught between clasped hands, aponia walked & walked & walked until the shore was behind her wake——— hooded eyes glazed over with the barest flicker of fatigue ; THE FOREVER EMOTION TRAPPED BETWEEN THE BINARIES OF HER RIBCAGE, an immortal ghost of her humanity.

at least, in this, the mortal delight of watching setting suns & waking moons would be enjoyed, without the ignorance of pretending how numbers made up the sky & codes reflected the light cast upon her. that, as wispy as the breeze, followed the memory of companionship, a———

shy blue eyes blinked away the exhaustion, napping up at the direction of a stranger's voice. how far had she walked, aimless yet inevitably into the radius of another, more fortunate soul? lips pursed into the beginnings of a frown, TOO QUAINT TO MIMIC THE TRUTH OF A SCOWL, one she, herself, seemed incapable of creating. the greeting though was welcoming enough, & truth to the offer, it had been years since she had the luxury of a smore. ( what exactly that was, she seemed forgetful, but the smell of charring sugar shed a possible light on the sweet's making. )

❛ ah, you are too kind. i apologize for interrupting your peace. ❜ wandering feet set themselves forward to a destination, that beneath the brushes of foliage & into the clearing lit only by a pit of carefully tamed fire. pursed lips became that of a smile, gentle & appreciative, before her gaze finally reached the lady perched beside the flames. ❛ if you will allow me, then i will join you. i. . . ❜

FAMILIARITY GRASPED HER THROAT, & STRANGLED FORTH ANY UTTERANCE OF FURTHER EXPLANATIONS. the feeling was so sudden, so impossibly swift, discipline nearly split apart the fragment she stood as, a shock so utterly disobedient, her expression fell with an uncomfortable ease.

in contrast to herself, fu hua sat casually before her, though evidently not absent of a similar surprise as the disbelief that refused to release her. AGAINST ALL ODDS, FU HUA EXISTED. it was simply a strange oddity that she existed in front of discipline, of all ghosts.

her name fell softly from fu hua's lips, though she had yet to tear herself from the disbelief ; CONFUSED EYES MET THOSE OF A VIBRANT COLOR, so unlike the gaze she remembered, yet belonging to the memory as no other would. quiet, aponia uttered, ❛ fu hua. ❜ & said nothing else, simply to digest the name in full. discipline turned taut, then, once all was consumed. she straightened what had relaxed, pressed together lips that fell open, & changed all besides the tenderness of her gaze.

❛ . . . you are different. ❜ came, first, the obvious. second, followed the trail of her feet, guiding her forward until she stood closer, further into the light. in little time, such sternness softened. ❛ i am surprised, but cannot be anymore. you are a force of the untouchable, fu hua. ❜

( HAVE YOU MISSED ME AS I HAVE MISSED YOU? WHAT HAS BECOME OF YOU NOW, & DOES IT BEAR RESEMBLANCE TO THE REBIRTH OF MYSELF? WHAT HAS CHANGED BETWEEN US, OR HAS ANYTHING AT ALL?

[ . . . ] discipline remained silent of all inquiries, scripted only to the very moment it existed within. )

"S-sorry..." He muttered so quietly it was practically inaudible, clearing his throat afterwards as if he hadn't said anything at all.

INEVITABLY, attempts to satiate minor curiosities were to be possessed by the possibility of mishaps ; always the unlucky wing, she betted fruitlessly on. at first, the collision of kites was merely a fault of her own, for stepping too far a distance somehow compelled the paper to catch wind & carelessly glide on a tilt, right towards the boy's kite. it was unfortunate, of course, & aponia made quick to apologize in kind, even if her words were small, soft - spoken beneath the tide of the ocean.

humorlessly & against the wish of both hands, hers & the boy's, their kites remained together, driven apart by a partition of air for only a span of seconds, before drifting back towards one another. AN ARTFULLY IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY OF ATTRACTION, the invisible hand guiding two souls together, despite any ill attempts to pry them apart.

however, THIS WAS NOT THE PLAY OF ROMANCE REGARDED AS APPROPRIATE, & neither was such persistence anything but exasperatingly disappointing.

shy blue eyes flit over to the boy, lips thin & pursed into a feelingless line. NERVOUS, he was, surely, for his apology was near inaudible, completely nonexistent if it was not for aponia's greatened sense of hearing. this would not do. a discomfort unto the child was, as thus, a disservice of herself.

( & a blatant mistake for them both, as she would do well to be left alone. completely. SHE HAD NOT THE NECESSITY FOR COMPANIONSHIP, NOT AFTER THE ENTIRETY OF AN ERA WITHOUT IT. )

but kites were new to her, & an attempt at retracting its line further into the roll of string within her grasp worked for only a moment. the kite descended slowly, before suddenly tilting to the side & twisting itself among the string of the boy's own kite.

A PITIFUL HAPPENSTANCE. discipline's unmoving expression faltered then, paired softly with the lull of her apology, a gentle tilt of her head to acknowledge both the boy & her mistake, ❛ i'm sorry, i must have tugged its line wrong. the fault is wholly mine, i promise. ❜ & she stood silent, DISOBEDIENT KITE GUIDED ASTRAY BY HER HAND STILL, before glancing down at the loose strings in her fist.

A real sky, in a real world. If she were to reach forward now she would certainly feel the real warmth of the other's skin, not one diluted by distant static as she had grown so accustomed to.

Or perhaps there would be static still, she does not care. Aponia's very being wore their past upon it like a scar. It could mar her face, split her into a thousand fragmented pieces, carve her into a mere husk of herself. Elysia would cradle and cherish each and every one, if only it meant that they could be near once more.

As they are now, as they are ( and as she knows ) because her hands have moved despite her instruction, because she is reaching to for Aponia's own.

Because, when they touch, it is not a thousand sensations from memory programmed to pitter across her nerves. It is real. Real enough. Elysia cannot swallow her smile.

"After all this time, you are still so resilient." Aponia who walked along fate's tightrope, who knew and saw it as one might themself. Aponia who bore the weight of a thousand lifetimes on her soft shoulders. "It is as though we last saw each other only yesterday, and yet I feel like I have missed you for an eternity."

THIS FRAGMENT OF APONIA'S SIMULATION IS NO MORE REAL THAN THE THINNING STRING TETHERED TO BOTH IT & the elysian realm, of which is merely a shattered dream she cannot keep herself from cutting her fingers upon, determined to gather each fractured glass——— memories, of herself, of those who long passed, of those forgotten & not missed——— until a meager attempt at recollection can be absolved.

but, hopefully, THERE IS A TRIUMPH IN THE BLEAK SPREAD OF DARKNESS ABOVE THEM ; the forever knowledge that, at least here, in teyvat, there comes an existence where they are human, together, before they are the binaries that once made up their bodies & blood.

ELYSIA IS HERE, an observation & confession all at once. ELYSIA IS HERE, & even if aponia is not, there remains comfort in the revelation, as painful as it may be.

& the silent yet looming question nearly becomes suffocating. ( WILL SHE TAKE ME AS I AM? WILL HER GAZE PRY THROUGH MY VERY BEING & SEE FIRST A TRAGEDY? WILL I BE ACCEPTED, AGAIN, FOR WHAT I HAVE BECOME & WILL REMAIN? ) disicpline releases a shuddering exhale, hands suddenly frigid from where they are clasped at her stomach ; incredulous, she becomes, for temperature is merely a trait no simulation possesses. not as she is now, not half the prophet elysia once knew.

though aponia does not flinch at the fingers cupping hers, she cannot stifle the surprise that arches her brows, nor the parting of thin, pursed lips. THERE IS WARMTH, a heat blatant enough to drag her gaze down to where she & elysia's fingers interlock, where this simple body of hers refuses the temptation of glitching & snapping at the seams. tangible, she is programmed to be, but the truth of such touch is incompatible, entirely lost to her.

shy blue eyes rise to meet a tender, wholly human smile, given despite all she is, all she has become. ( FATE NEVER SPOKE OF A REUNION, NOT ONE OF THIS CAPACITY. for once, the heavens left her blind before its greatest martyr. )

❛ i must be. ❜ is all aponia has the strength to utter, at first, too wound up by this strange tightening of code within her to produce much else besides another, strangled exhale. her head bows, then, NOT SO MUCH IN REVERENCE AS IT IS BELIEF. ❛ for your paradise to remain, i must achieve a greater immortality. & i must succeed. ❜

& she has, if the softness of elysia's musings offer any answer. for the first time in a wayward while, aponia allows herself a smile, even if small. her thumb rubs that of whatever skin of elysia's hand is in reach.

softly, discipline whispers, ❛ an eternity is a humble length of time to describe how long you have been missed. but i am gladdened that it, at least, is mutual. ❜ by her, all of her, each fragment of aponia's comatose body & each crackling glitch splitting apart the weakened realm. humanity is no longer lost, yet the weight of loss remains upon burdened shoulders. SHE CONFESSES WILLINGLY, then, ❛ the elysian realm is quieter now, near dissonant. . . much has changed, & despite my greatest efforts, all had been in vain. ❜

aponia should confide in her, ask of all elysia has witnessed in this new world, & all she has come to learn. question what memories have become hers, wholly. maybe inquire about the humans that live here, too, but not a word of such thoughts leave her lips.

neither by free will nor true purpose, APONIA HAS BEEN TRANSPORTED TO THESE ISLANDS ENTIRELY BY ACCIDENT; or at least, she has no memory of traveling here. confused, but certainly dressed for the occasion because of her realm's simulation, she's hardly resistant to the opportunity set before her, and will happily take this chance to enjoy being human again, even if briefly.

many will find her simply lounging on a beach chair with her eyes closed, helping children with their every adventurous endeavor ( she's incredibly weak to them ), or floating above the sea to peer within it ( strange behavior, but she's unsure about venturing beneath the waves ) .

alongside the ask meme, i'll be choosing a few prompts from the june commission board to volunteer aponia for, though i'm easily tempted by other prompts if those catch your attention instead. to start off, the thread cap will likely be kept at three unless the interaction is from an ask spilling over. please heed the interaction notes on this blog's pinned post for any curiosities as to mentions of her eccentric "impressions".

COMMISSION BOARD.

GHOST STORIES :: aponia is anything but a stranger to the art of storytelling, even if her larger audiences were once the children under her care and not others near her age. even still, tales of horror can't be that hard over dulling drinks and the right atmosphere. because of her eerily calm composure, attempts to scare each other may even become a game of tallies; whoever's story manages to startle the other into physically reacting wins. bring your best stories, though, since she's a hard nut to crack.

LONELY MOUNTAINTOP CATHEDRAL :: as a lady of the cloth, she'd be interested wholly in the building itself and whatever mysteries of lore may be hidden within it, not the climb. plus, aponia wouldn't subject herself to climbing, since she can fly / hover, so the interaction would likely occur immediately at the top, with a reference to her pity - watching your muse climb the mountain if they can't traverse like she can.
