[04.02.2018] Finals are over. Another semester has passed. 2 Days off and off I go to the next one. But with hard work, and a bit of fairy dust, it will surely pay off. After all, don't we all live on tea and the smell of new books?

[28.01.2018] You need to put your heart into it. Ba dum tsss :)
[24.01.2018] Once you accept that this is the life you want, studying sudenly gets a lot more interesting.
types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.
if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.
if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
[30.09.2017] Third Year Began! Clinical years are here :) It will feel good to put are stethoscopes to good use. It sure will feel better to see our knowledge being applied. Good luck and congratulations to everyone that this year starts wearing the white coat and a stethoscope around their necks. Make sure to know what this truly means. It’s not just a white coat.Â

hello! With school just around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to start up some online study groups. My goal with these study groups is to not just help each other out, like with homework, studying for quizzes and tests, or answering questions, but I also want these groups to become a positive and non-competitive (I know that competition can be good sometimes, but chances are you already have enough of that at your school/university and we most definitely do not need any cut-throat, stressful competition here!) community where us members can congratulate each other for our achievements, show our talents, and receive feedback.Â
Obviously, for a study group to work, there must be other people in the group. This is where I need your help - I’m asking that anyone who sees this post and likes this idea to reblog it, even if you yourself do not wish to participate in the study group. It’s incredibly important that we spread this information around if we want this to work! So please do so!
If you are interested in joining/creating a study group, or possibly even administrating one, I have created a Google Form for you to fill out. Click here or on the banner picture to do so. If neither of these links work, or you can’t access the form, message me directly or send me an ask.Â
Thanks for reading, and I hope these study groups work out :)
Such a great idea for the start of a new year of studying!!! I already have my study group, which I love so much, but I’ll leave it here for anyone who needs/wants it!!!!
Studying the eye for neuroanatomy final next week :) after an intense exam season this is my last exam. I hope to be able to study really well in spite of being tired. Good work to everyone!!Â
24.04.2017 Amen to that. “When in doubt, go to the library”
17.04.2017 After months away from this blog, I’m back. I’ve been hard core studying for finals of first semester and after that I’ve taken sometime away from social media to focus and rest, in order to recuperate from the intense exam season I’ve endured. Started second semester with neuroanatomy which is lovely :D and now I’m in gastrointestinal physiology. Good study everybody :D
28.12.2016 Physiology of the heart. Exam Madness is definitly here... Good work people :) For this extraordinary life we must also do an extraordinary amount of studying.

Hey, How is it studying in Portugal? Do you plan to look overseas to specialize or thinking of staying and training at local hospitals?
Hi!!I like studying in Portugal, particularly in my university, which allows astrong practical component :) We go to the field since day one and I haven’tfound one other university in which direct contact with patients and themedical reality happens so early in our medical education. In terms ofspecialization, I don’t know yet, I would for sure love to study overseas for awhile, experience another culture and so on, but I recognise that we have agreat health education in Portugal and that it would fit me just fine :D Ithink I would like to spend a few time overseas, studying g or working, but thesolid ground and foundations of my education will for sure be in Portugal :DÂ
Microbiology + Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Sounds about right. :)

That moment in class when a good friend of mine say’s “That’s so Hermione of you” after I stick my hand high to the ceiling and go “Professor, actually that makes sense,...” and then proceeded to explain my thoughts on viral presentation.... That was really uplifting :’) Study Like Granger people!!! @emiramz

Med School and Studying
If you want to become a doctor, you should get used to the idea that you’ll spend a great deal of your time studying. Through the course of our degree we will be asked to learn, understand and commit to memory an enormous amount of material and when, finally, we become doctors, studying doesn’t stop. The medical sciences evolve by the second. Everyday life changing discoveries are made and we need to keep up with that in order to provide our patients the best resources we can find. So, even though it might not be one of the most pleasant things to do, it is something very necessary on our way to become good physicians. Since many of you have been asking for tips on how I study, here are a few tips that worked for me:
1 - Cornell Notes taking system - this is the note taking method I found most helpful to take notes in class and at home when I’m studying. It keeps things organized, it’s quite easy to use and, when revising, it’s quite simple to understand.
2 - One Page Notes - this is a tip given by Doctor Andrea Tooley on her YouTube channel, which I truly recommend checking out. Basically, the point is trying to condense one class, chapter, etc. in one page. Of course sometimes it’s a lot of material but trying to do that, even if it exceeds one page, makes us focus on the essential.Â
3 - Not too much stuff at once - when studying, I don’t like to have too many things open at once. I like to keep it simple, just some slides, maybe a book and my notes. It’s not helpful to study by two books, three reviews and notes. It’s a lot of stuff and it gets harder to concentrate. What I do is to choose the materials I find most helpful and take my notes based on that. If then, if I find that another book that has some helpful information, I read it after and then I add those notes.
4 - Not let work pile up -Â Simple to understand, HARD to do.Â
5 - Ask older students - when you don’t know how to study for some particular subject, just ask someone who already done it.
6 - Airplane Mode -Â when I want to focus on something, and I need to be on the PC, I put it on air plane mode. Blind yourself to distractions.Â
7 - Water or Tea - have a bottle of water on the desk. It keeps you hydrated and when you’re frustrated, just have a sip of water or tea instead of going online. Hydrates and calms you down. Just don’t go on drinking liters and liters of water please.....
8 - One thing at the time - when you’re studying one subject, focus on that subject. Don’t be thinking about the other ten thing you need to do. You need to be doing that, so focus on that. Be efficient, learn to prioritize.
9 - Plan it OUT - I’m a fan of the bullet journal principal. A plane white notebook and my to do lists, exams, etc. It’s important to have a good outlook on what you have to do. I just don’t waste too much time on aesthetics. (Still looks cool though xD)
10 - Get cosy -Â make studying a cosy moment. It helps :DÂ
Good luck with everything people!! We can all do this!!! Every great doctor started out as we did: Dreamers and Hard Workers, who wanted to help making this world a better place. Now go study ;)Â
You're welcome. x :-) Ahh, but it's hard and i'm trying Like could you please tell me the way you study?
It’salways hard at the beginning (and the rest of the way, but specially in the beginningxD ) Every subject is different and everyone has their particular ways tostudy. I like to make notes as I read about something, be it slides, a book, etc. I write as if I were explaining the material to someone else who doesn’tknow anything about that. If I can explain it, it’s because I understand itwell enough xD and then it’s all about committing it to memory. In terms ofstudying for an exam, in a perfect world, I would revise my notes, reallycommit them to memory and then solve last year exams. But of course many timesI don’t have time to see everything so I focus on the most important parts seenthroughout the semester. You can most certainly do it. We all have the capacityto do it. Every great doctor started out knowing just as much as we do now. Therest is all about hard work and dedication. And a lot of patience and theability to keep a cool head in moments of frustration. You goooo buddy ;)

Another year begins. Make last year mistakes your teachers, your happiest moments your inspiration and your dream your guiding light. “We can start over, every day. We get second chances to become who we’ve always wanted to be. It’s never too late to change.” Meredith Grey, Grey’s Anatomy.Â
First Year of University: Medicine and what I Learned
First year has come to an end. It seems like yesterday I was sitting at my first lecture and, at the same time, it feels like a life time has passed. It was intense, hard, interesting, great and a whole bunch of mixed emotions as everything good in life is, right? It was a lot different then what I had expected, and I do not mean that as a bad thing. So here are a few things I learned this year.
1-When people say med school is hard, IT IS HARD!! We come from a place where we studied and worked a lot to make this dream come true, but the truth is, once we get there, it will be expected even more of us. It will be scary at first, actually it will continue to be, but that’s what makes you great, it makes you go beyond yourself, you discover that you were stronger and capable of pulling of stuff you’d never imagine. But you can do it, people before you did it and will continue to do it. You just have to give it your best, it takes everything you got.
2-You will fail. For the most of us, we will fail a couple of exams and even some subjects. The material is difficult, there’s no time to study, you might not have paid attention in lectures or not studied enough or studied the wrong way. The bottom line is, failing is not the end of the world. It is hard to find a doctor who has never failed at something throughout its life. And it’s important even to fail at somethings. It makes you humbler, it makes you work harder, it shows you what works and what does not, it will make you see how bad you want to be a doctor. I speak from experience and from what many doctors told us, one of the best doctors I know included. What is important is that, when you fail, you don’t go down. YOU FIGHT HARDER.
3-WE NEED EACH OTHER! I know that in many universities and medical schools competition is a constant in each med student’s life. I am really blessed that that is not the spirit in my university. We are a small university, there are few of us, but we are a united family that helps each other in times of difficulty that celebrates like crazy when things go right and that picks you up when things go wrong. The older ones guide the new ones and everyone helps each other out. And I can assure you it makes all the difference. Medicine is known at our university as the pack, we don’t fight each other to go the distance, we go together and we go further. That is our motto. You’ll meet very few people outside the medical profession that understand what you do, how hard it is and why you do it. Your colleagues do understand that, and that understanding should make them your family, your friends, not your enemy.
4- Don’t let examinations ruin the beauty of what you are learning. You are learning about one of the most complex and interesting subjects there is. What you learn will make the difference in people’s lives. Please, do not make it about a grade, because it is not.
5- Don’t miss out on life. Medicine will be a great part of your life. It is not a career choice, its life choice. But don’t miss out on a coffee with a friend, or a party here and there, get to know the people you work with, go out for a walk, go on fun adventures, and get to know the place you are studying in or show it to the ones who don’t know it.
6-Don’t waste time. Procrastination does not go well with medicine. Time is something that we don’t have too much to spare. Make the best you can with the time you have. Procrastination does nothing for you and the sooner you realise this the better. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to be doing this?” Do I really want to be watching this video? It’s not even funny, do I really need to take an hour to shower, when on any other time it would only take 20 minutes? Do I really need to be staring at that wall? Get that out of your way, you’re smarter than that and it will make you feel much better. Because, most of the time, you don’t ever want to be doing whatever you are doing as procrastination.
7-”when you’re tired, learn to rest, not to give up”. You’ve read it, you’ve memorized this. It is important
8-Treasure every moment. It will go by pretty fast. Treasure the things you learn, the friendships you make, the family you create, the teachers that truly inspired you, the walks around the campus, the adventures, the late nights with friends, studying or going out for fun, the crazy examinations with scary professors, those moments when you finally understand a difficult subject.... It’s your life, don’t pretend it isn’t. Make it extraordinary.Â
And now, Vacations!!! This blog revealed to be so much more interesting than I thought it would be, I met people from so many different parts of the world and talked about the most Random things. Thanks you for that. I hope you have a university experience as great as I had and am having. Never give up on your dreams. Keep fighting until the last second. Make every second count. See you next semester ;)Â
