can't form fully coherent thoughts but Frankelda... ohhhhhh Soy Frankelda was so so so SO good I've been looking forward to this movie for a year and a half and it did not disappoint
Mexican gothic horror romance stop motion musical movie seems almost too good to be true, but it's real and holy cow just looking at this movie is such a treat for the eyes. I want to rewatch this movie three times over for the visuals alone. Such amazing detailed sets and characters painstakingly crafted, and incredible experimentation of different art mediums interspersed with the stop motion during climatic moments of the film. shout out to mother coyote, the terror clan leader of death for having my favorite design, and the clan leader hydra of the psyche (behind frankelda herself ofc)
and the musical score and songs are so hauntingly beautiful!!!! that the nightmares are played on a web like harp by the royal family, set to a score of music that's a horror story written by the nightmare writer was something I really loved. the reprise of invisible ink with frankelda and herneval's child selves during the final act was by far my favorite song.
Frankelda herself as a character is my favorite part of the movie, exploring the idea of being a figurative and literal ghost writer in the stories, intertwined with how women's voices are often silenced or stolen, and the struggle to reclaim your own voice and agency in confronting your own fears, the power to tell your own story. to write a story that creates a new reality, and defies the current one, no matter the risks.
really fantastic movie, if you can watch it I highly recommend because it deserves all the love 💕
