In the early 1960s? When Civil Rights acts were being passed? Marilyn Monroe, who died one year prior to Plath and also lived with mental illnesses, was a staunch activist for Civil Rights.

What fascinates me about Secretary is that Lee's brother-in-law, played by Oz Perkins. In the script and the credits he is given the name Jonathan and yet Lee's sister, someone she grew up with and has known her entire life, is just credited as "Lee's sister". Jonathan also visits Lee during her hunger strike (or delusions, whichever your interpretation of that scene was), and her sister is nowhere to be seen.
