Add moving elements.

Whatever kind of game you have, add moving elements to it. Got a mushroom dungeon? Make those mushrooms sway and pulse. Got an abandoned dwarven mine? Add some moving gearwork and minecarts going by. A lighthouse in the distance, SOMETHING.

It’s doesn’t have to be a part of the level that affects gameplay, but the universe isn’t a static thing. It’s a constant state of action and reaction as we slowly hurtle towards its inevitable heat death. Your game should reflect that.
