Since I have family that has been coming to this area for 50+ years, I asked them what they knew of the Ojibwe nation in this area.

The general consensus of my family’s opinion of the people on the reservation was that they were: “a little rough”. 

My dad said that the people on the reservation were known for not having much money and drug use. He expressed admiration for the culture and what these people came from and was disappointed that they seemed to have fallen into this behavior. He was telling me these things while we were on Leech Lake itself and showing me the area.  

My grandmother had a similar opinion that the people on the reservation had a bit of a rough life. 

As you’re probably wondering, if you even are wondering is, what this blog is about, this blog is a way to write down and collect the research, testaments, and opinions that I have collected from the people around me in my search of understanding the native people and their culture that once and still live here in the Leech Lake reservation in Walker, Minnesota. 

I’ve been curious about the Ojibwe people for some time now as I’ve been coming to this area for summer vacation most of my life (see About Me for more information).

I am sure that some of the information in this blog will be stereotypically harmful, but in the name of collecting ALL information that is handed to me, I will still be posting this information, but tagging it with tw: stereotypes when I think these opinions have been pushed forward instead of facts.

I’ve been going to the Moore’s Lodge resort on Leech Lake with my family since I can remember. It’s been a family tradition to travel up to Walker, MN for summer vacation since my grandfather came up here with his friends around the late 1950s, early 1960s. I stopped going around 2016 because of various activities and responsibilities that have taken place during our designated vacation week that prevented me from going. This year, 2020, has been the first time I’ve been able to come back to Leech Lake and since I usually get bored, I decided that a project was in store. This blog is one of those projects (for more information on what this blog is about please see the post, Purpose of this Blog). 

I’m a 20 year old from Alabama that is currently in college studying Languages and Literature with a minor in Film Production. I have a cat named Dracula who I absolutely adore, and I identify as a nonbinary lesbian. I’m interested in programming, nature, and the study of higher self (whatever that means as it changes on almost the daily). My favorite color is black, and I dabble in art and music. 

I’ve done research on old Greek artifacts before and had to create a blog for that research and so creating this blog seemed like an easy next step in the comfort of research.
