When Ishihara was young, the two shared a close and loving father-son relationship. However, everything changed when Ishihara’s mysterious gift brought a series of strange misfortunes upon the family. Overcome by fear and shame, Tsushima gradually distanced himself from Ishihara, causing their bond to deteriorate. Kanae Daisuke † — Ishihara’s mother. She was originally arranged to marry Tsushima Daisuke but the two genuinely fell in love and were blessed with five sons. She worked alongside her husband in managing the family shrine and was known as a hardworking, gentle, and devoted mother. Unlike her husband, Aoi never feared Ishihara’s mysterious gift. She believed it may have been inherited from her own ancestors, who were said to perceive supernatural phenomena unseen by others. Despite the many misfortunes that befell the family, she loved Ishihara unconditionally, leaving him with countless cherished memories. Aoi tragically died after giving birth to her youngest son, Koutarou, leaving Daisuke to raise their five sons alone

Rindo Daisuke (31 years old) — Ishihara’s older brother and the eldest of the four brothers. After their mother’s death, he took on her responsibilities, helping manage the family shrine and eventually becoming their father’s most trusted son. Serious, hardworking, and blunt, Rindo is respected by the community and deeply devoted to his family—except for Ishihara. Rindo sees Ishihara as a curse upon the family. He despises his arrogance, fears his mysterious gift, and blames him for the misfortunes that befell them, especially their mother’s death. Convinced that Ishihara is mentally unstable, he harbors a deep grudge against him. Their constant, bitter clashes made reconciliation impossible. After Ishihara was driven from home, the brothers never spoke again, and Rindo was relieved to have him gone.

Junpei Daisuke (28 years old) — Ishihara’s second older brother. Easygoing, genuine, and guided by the motto Go with the flow, Junpei is known for his warmth and compassion. Deeply devoted to his family, he often acts as the peacemaker, using his calm and persuasive nature to defuse conflicts between Rindo and Ishihara. Unlike the rest of the family, Junpei has always treated Ishihara with kindness, and Ishihara genuinely appreciates him for it. However, he also resents Junpei at times, seeing him as a coward for siding with their father during past disputes. Since Ishihara left home, the two have never spoken in person, though Junpei continues to send occasional text messages that Ishihara quietly ignores.

Yudai Daisuke (21 years old) — Ishihara’s younger brother and the groundskeeper of the family shrine, where he is responsible for maintaining the gardens. Despite his intimidating appearance and naturally loud voice, Yudai is gentle, compassionate, and deeply devoted to both the shrine and his family. His blunt way of speaking often leads to misunderstandings, making it difficult for him to connect with others. As children, Yudai admired Ishihara and the two shared a close bond. However, as Ishihara grew increasingly rebellious and cruel toward the family, Yudai became deeply disappointed. Their relationship eventually fell apart, and he no longer has any desire to see his older brother again.

Shinji Nabatani † — Sen’s father. Since Sen has no memories of him, everything he knows comes from what Teijo has told him. As a result, Sen has mixed feelings toward his father. He feels anger and disappointment over the crimes Shinji was said to have committed, but at the same time, he can’t help feeling that there was more to the story. Deep down, he believes his father may have been a good man who had his own reasons for what happened. Unable to ignore his doubts, Sen begins looking into the truth behind his father’s sudden change in behavior and the events leading up to his death. No matter what he discovers, he still visits his father’s grave beside his mother’s every month to pay his respects.

Ine Nabatani † — Sen’s mother. Sadly, Sen has no real memories of her as he was only an infant when she died. The only image he has of her comes from old photographs and the stories Teijo shares about her. Even though they never had the chance to know each other, Sen believes his mother was a kind and loving person. He feels a strong connection to her and is proud to call himself her son. Together with Teijo, he visits her grave every month to pay his respects and keep her memory alive.

Teijo Masakuza (29 years old) — Sen’s uncle and only relative. When they first met, Sen had no idea who he was. Having spent years in the wilderness, he viewed Teijo and everyone else as strangers and reacted with fear and aggression, often attacking anyone who came too close. Because of this, he was temporarily placed in a welfare clinic, where he slowly began adjusting to life around other people. Once Sen was stable enough, Teijo took him in and became his guardian. Over the years, the two formed a close bond through patience, trust, and countless heart-to-heart conversations. With Teijo’s guidance, Sen learned basic manners, communication, and how to live in society. Although he still struggles with social cues and has a limited vocabulary, he now lives a peaceful life and sees Teijo not just as his uncle, but as the father figure he never had.

Funi — Sen’s fox. She originally lived in the forest but followed Sen to Oita after he was rescued. Long before that, Sen had found her as a young fox caught in a hunter’s trap and set her free. From then on, the two kept crossing paths until they eventually became inseparable, surviving the wilderness side by side. Over the years, Sen grew deeply attached to her and named her Funi. Even after moving in with Teijo, Funi never left his side. She often visits their home and can usually be found curled up on Sen’s hammock for a nap. Although Teijo tried to chase her away at first, he eventually accepted her as part of the family and now lets her come and go whenever she pleases.

Homei Masakuza (56 years old) — He is currently retired and lives with his wife, Rioko, in a quiet suburb far from Oita. Ever since Teijo was in high school, he and his father have had a rocky relationship. Homei always wanted what was best for his children and worked hard to provide for the family. He genuinely tried to raise them into responsible adults, but he had a habit of being too strict and expected everyone to follow his rules without question. Teijo’s delinquent lifestyle constantly put them at odds. Homei was tired of receiving complaints from the school and neighbors, while Teijo felt suffocated by his father’s strict expectations. Their arguments became more frequent over time until Teijo finally left home, determined to live life on his own terms. Since then, the two have barely spoken. Both still blame each other for how things turned out and have convinced themselves that keeping their distance is for the best.

Rioko Masakuza (55 years old) — Teijo’s mother. She lives in the suburbs with her husband. Rioko is the one person Teijo could never bring himself to argue with. She has always been kind and understanding, believing there was a good person beneath his rebellious exterior. Whenever Teijo clashed with his father, she would be the one to comfort him afterward, patiently listening to him and offering gentle advice on how to control his temper. When Teijo finally left home, Rioko was devastated. She blamed herself, wondering if she had somehow failed him as a mother. The later loss of her daughter, Ine, only deepened her heartbreak. Since leaving home, Teijo has never spoken to his mother again. It’s one of his biggest regrets. He doesn’t know how she’s doing or whether she has forgiven him, but the thought that he caused her so much pain has never left him. More than anything, he wishes he could apologize to her one day.

Ine Nabatani † — Teijo’s older sister and the family member he gets along with the best. A talented painter, she’s mature, strong-willed, and has a tomboyish personality. She loves teasing Teijo and often picks on him affectionately, though it’s always out of love. Despite all the tension within their family, Ine never looked down on her younger brother for being a delinquent. She believed he had a good heart and always hoped he would find his way someday. She cared deeply for him and cherished her family more than anything. A few years later, Ine married Shinji and moved out to start a new life with him. Before long, the couple welcomed their first child, beginning what seemed like a happy future together. Sadly, Teijo eventually lost contact with his sister. Years later, he learned the devastating truth: Ine and Shinji had died after accidentally falling from a cliff, while their infant son disappeared without a trace. The tragedy left Teijo haunted by guilt and regret, especially because he never had the chance to see his sister again or keep the promise of always being there for her.

Shinji Nabatani † — Teijo’s brother-in-law and Ine's husband. He works as a paramedic and is generally quiet, shy, and soft-spoken, though he becomes much more confident whenever he’s on the job. He first met Ine at a matchmaking party, and the two quickly became a loving couple. After dating for several years, they got married and eventually welcomed a baby boy into their family. Teijo always saw Shinji as the complete opposite of Ine. While he thought Shinji could be a little timid, he also recognized him as a kind and decent man who truly loved his sister. More importantly, Shinji treated Ine as an equal and always respected her, which earned Teijo’s approval. Over time, the two developed a good relationship, and Teijo came to see him as part of the family. He was genuinely happy watching the Nabatani couple build a life together—until everything fell apart. According to the official report, Shinji committed a robbery and fled from the police, taking Ine with him during the escape. The chase ended in tragedy when the two fell to their deaths, leaving behind their infant son, who disappeared without a trace. Teijo refused to believe that Shinji could have done something so reckless, but he could never forgive him for the role he played in his sister’s death, regardless of the circumstances.
