QUICK TIP #2: FOLLOW UP
So you nailed the interview, right? You and the interviewer shook hands and the way she smiled at you, you just know the job is yours. Cool. But your job isn’t done. The critical mistake that people make all the time is overestimating how memorable they are. No matter how great the interview went, it was still just one of many. Seal the deal by following up. Send your interviewer a thank you email thanking them for their time. Mention all the moments in the interview you want them to remember. For example, if you had a great response to a question they asked, you might say “I really enjoyed discussing____with you” so you can remind them of your viewpoints. If you want to go above and beyond, get the office address and send a physical thank you note. The effort shows real commitment. Half the battle is charm, the other is pure persistence.

The Interview
Ayyyyy. You got a callback, and now you’re going in for the interview 👏🏾👏🏾. This part can actually be fun. But being prepared is essential. This is my recipe for the perfect interview.
1 DRIVE THE CONVERSATION
One of the scariest things about an interview is the awkward silence when neither you nor the interviewer knows where to take the conversation next. But there are definitely ways to avoid that. Do your research so that when it's your turn to speak you have a few talking points. Or better yet, take your turn. Turn a question into an opportunity to talk about something you hoped to get to address. Make it specific to the company, department, and people you would be working with. And if that uncomfortable pause should come up, use it as an opportunity. Drive the conversation to an area you feel comfortable speaking on. This gives you a chance to show off your expertise. Talk about a unique challenge of the job that you figured out a solution for. Describe a piece of useful information that shows you’ve been reading up on the topic. Bring in a personal account on the job that taught you a lesson. If there are holes in your resume, be the one to address them first. Integrate it into the conversation and explain why it shouldn’t be a concern. An interview is a lot about connecting from person to person. So use your personality to your advantage. Make jokes, share your opinions, take the lead. Showing authority in this way tell the person on the end of the conversation that your certain of what you have to offer and they should be too.
2 BRAG ABOUT YOURSELF
You poppin’ right? Make sure your interviewer knows that. 😂😛 I like to think about the interview process as a chance to brag about myself. Dig up all your relevant accomplishments, list them out, and decide which ones seem most relevant to the position your applying for. If you’re applying for a position as a staff writer for example, maybe your “best investigative journalism” award from writing for school paper is something you might want to mention. Then go into detail about the work that earned you the recognition. Talk about what inspired you to do it. Address the challenges you faced getting it done and how you overcame them. How has the work been received? What are your next plans? Take any opportunity to make yourself seem interesting and active. Or, bring attention to what makes you uniquely qualified to do the job you’re about to get. What experience do you have that no other candidates can claim? When you get to the part of the interview when they ask you to “tell them a little more about yourself”, start off with some basic information about your interests, and hobbies, and use that to direct the conversation into the work you’ve done that has made you qualified to work with them. The good thing about talking about yourself is, you get to decide what's important. Whether its a class you took, a trip you planned, an event you were booked for, spin it so that it seems like an experience that prepared you for this position. This is the time to be confident and sure of yourself so that they can be sure you're the person they need to hire.
3 ASK QUESTIONS
Just the other day I had an experience where I spent the majority of an interview asking all the questions. This is where doing my research came in handy. Giving myself some time to prep beforehand meant when the conversation started to fall a little silent I was able to reroute it. An important thing to remember is that the interview should work both ways. It’s about finding a good match more so than the employer picking the right employee out of a lineup. Ask good questions so you can figure out if this is the right environment for you. Some things you might ask:
What’s the leadership style at __?
What kind of projects would I be working one?
Who would I directly report to?
What’s the work-life balance?
When is the next time I would be up for review?
Is there room for growth at_?
Did you have any questions/concerns about my resume?
I think I’ll follow up with a separate quick tip that lists a few more good questions to ask. LMK if you think that would be helpful.
HMU with questions/comments or if you wanna roleplay for an interview you have coming up. I have skype and all that. 😘😘😘 Next, we’re getting into how to make yourself at home at the new job.

QUICK TIP #1: GIVE YOUR COVER LETTER SOME PERSONALITY
I mentioned this in my last post, but I thought I would go into greater detail on exactly how to spice up your cover letter. The simple answer is to start with a less generic opening statement. Introduce yourself by sharing a unique fact about yourself. A silly reason that your passionate about the job you want to do. Think about how you talk about your passions out loud or to your friends and put that on paper.Another way to do it is to experiment with the format. What if you told a story about yourself in the third person? Maybe you could give a timeline of your life starting from the moment you figured out your “mission in life” to the moment you decided to apply for this particular job. How can you showcase some element of your skill/ talent within the span of a page? That is the question to use when determining what to put in your cover letter. It’s just as much (if not more) about who you are as what you can do. Show that you put time and effort into this letter, and make it as unique as you are.
1. Cut toxic people out of your life.
You don’t have to put up with toxic people. Cut them out where you can, make time for people who support you.
2. Accept that you will fail.
Knowing and accepting you will fail makes starting things so much easier and thats going to make 2018 a whole lot better.
3. Digitally declutter.
Clear out your phone, clear space and move your photos to Google Photo, delete apps you don’t use, organise the item you use the most.
4. On that, try for Inbox Zero.
Inbox Zero is just that, your inbox with Zero unread emails.
5. Clean out your cupboard
We all know we accumulate more than we need. Clean it out and have a fresh start with the things you use and need.
6. Deep clean your car, desk, workspace, house or bedroom.
You deserve to work and live in a clean and functional space. Allowing you to work on things that you love and to have that time to yourself.
7. Get better sleep
You might not need more sleep, but better sleep is something almost everyone needs.
8. Make your bed when you get up in the morning.
It is one of the small everyday habits that has a profound effect on your day. You get up in the morning and make your bed, you’ve just ticked off two things on your daily to do list!
9. Write a list of SMART goals.
The best goals, SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, RELEVANT and TIME BOUND. Breaking the goals down to make sure you do them.
10. Say ‘No’
Say no to things that will not challenge you to grow and reach your potential. No point in spreading yourself thin and produce work that is not your best and to stress on top of it all.
11. Get your finances in order, or at least under control.
If getting them in order just isn’t possible, at least get them under control. Create a show-box budget, file your paperwork, label it.
12. Carve out time weekly for you to focus on you.
Even if it is one hour at the end of every week MAKE that time where you can be with you. You’re important, you deserve it.
13. Switch ‘Sorry’ for ‘Thank you’ when you possible.
Switch it up, you don’t have to be sorry, you can be humble and recognise kindness rather than apologise for kindness and consideration that you deserve.
14. Learn just one new thing.
Even if it is how to boil an egg to perfection. Learn just one new thing, how to make a cocktail, how to drive, to touch your toes, a language. Whatever it is, just one thing.
15. Get a small plant and look after it.
You’re making yourself responsible for a small living thing. They make your space beautiful and bring you in to contact with nature, which we often forget.
16. Put your emotional, physical and mental health first.
Your health is important, treat it as such.
17. Ask for help
From the people who are supportive, caring and loving of you. Ask, even if they can’t help at this moment, they will be there for you.
18. Shift your perspective
Outlook is everything. You don’t need any more bad vibes than the ones the world already throws.
