the dream team
the parallel between shiv calling tom in 3x02 when they were considering joining kendall and roman calling gerri, and shiv calling tom again in 3x09 but roman calling a nobody. gerri didn't betray roman at the end by not helping him, their relationship was already fucked up because of the dickpic thing and that's why he couldn't call her, she could've told him that their mother was selling them but he couldn't call her, HE ALMOST GOT HER FIRED
I hate them your honor

we all know kendall is supposed to be the most tragic figure in the show because of how many blunders he faces due to his eldest daughter / second child syndrome BUT I do think that tom is actually the most tragic figure here because kendall can survive all of this since he was born into it. it's in his blood.
but tom? tom wasn't made for this. he could get sent to jail because even though he's family- he's not really family to the roys. they'd sell him out if it meant their blood could stay. here's tom- a man who wasn't born rich. the downtown guy to shiv's uptown girl. but tom isn't only in here to win. he's here because of love.
he fell in love with the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the world. and he has to pay for it. whether it's getting a job or it's going to jail. and yet- tom is still in here for love because he can't help it. he has a deep affection for a man (the cousin of his wife) who doesn't want him. he has a wife who doesn't see him as an equal. the rest of the "family" thinks he's a fool.
tom may be head of atn. but he's really head of nothing because when the heads need to roll, he's first on the chopping block.
now, that's tragic.

Sophie. Please explain to me why an exchange including the sentence "I'd castrate and marry you" was so. effing. soft. (you know, right before the weird slap fight)
Alex!!!! I have so many Thoughts!!!
Okay, a few years ago, I read Anna Krien's incredible non-fiction book Night Games which is about a lot of things, but in particular it's about the relationship between sports, power and sex. Through those things it talks a lot about the relationship between toxic masculinity and male-to-male intimacy and community, and how violence against 'others' (namely women, but also other perceived outsiders to that male community) as well as each other, is really deeply entwined at the heart of that.
It's a book I think about a lot generally, but I seriously think about it all the time with Succession, because in a lot of ways, it's the same. It's the corporate world of course, not sports, but it's steeped in the same exclusivity, the same machismo, the same perceived excellence and masculine 'ideal' ā god, it's the breadwinner on steroids, right? (A particularly interesting concept for a character like Logan who came from nothing and who's father died when he was a small child, but that's neither here nor there for this question, haha).
One of the concepts though at the heart of the book is that toxic male culture creates an environment where intimacy in male relationships is something that is both deeply and humanly craved, and heavily derided and punished. Men aren't supposed to want intimate relationships with other men, but they do, and how they seek it is through the creation of a sort of 'pack' and male community, which is often forged through a kind of violence ā war, sport, gangs, fights, corporate hostile takeovers, haha.
You can hug a man on your team, but only after you've tackled one on the other team to the ground.
Or worse ā you rape a woman with your friend, to create a deeper closeness to your friend and solidify your 'male community'.
You perform an act of violence to allow an act of intimacy.
Again, Anna's book's pretty specifically about sport (and even more specifically about Australian Rules Football, although she does talk about other sport as well), but the basis is one that feels really realised in Succession.
God, think about the s1 finale where it's through the death of a waiter ā an outsider to the community ā that allows Logan to close the gap between him and Kendall again.
I think Tom and Greg embody that same principle in so many ways, but it's different for them. Many of the characters on this show perform versions of manhood and masculinity, frequently failing in their delivery, but Tom was expressing an act of violence as a request for intimacy because he doesn't know how else to get it.
He can't get either professional support nor personal comfort from his wife, and both are things he's received previously from Greg. They're a relationship that in some ways cemented itself in their 'othering' from the Roy community ā peripheral players to power instead of they themselves wielding it ā and I think it leaves both of them hungry for a community of their own. An intimacy.
The story of Nero and Sporus isn't just about violence and intimacy after all, it's about getting rid of a family to create a new one in that family's image ā kill Shiv and replace her with Greg. Not an imitation exactly, but a relationship that lets Tom feel in control, and grants him what he wants ā someone he can look after, someone he can be intimate with, someone, he feels, is on his team. The story itself is dark, but the reason beneath it isn't ā Tom's seeking a space to be vulnerable with someone he feels connected to, but he has no idea how to do it.
Violence, intimacy and power are all mixed up together for men like these, and I feel like that was such a loaded and honest example of it.
goddd the heartbreak in tomās voice when he says āneither do i gregā like he just admitted then and there that heās not really the asshole heās trained himself to be, least of all now that his career is on the line and his wife and in-laws are fucking him. the nero and sporus thing was actually so romantic because of the shift in power dynamic. tom was framing it like he himself was nero, the emperor, who would kill his wife so his eunuch could be the empress whoād rule beside him. but tom is now Terminal Tom. greg has leverage while tomās actively dying. he has no empire to offer and greg has nothing to gain from him anymore so the entire nature of their relationship has shifted. and tomās offering up this bit of information not as a threat like āiām gonna castrate youā but as an offer like āi would gladly take you as my wifeā. all this makes me sick in the head!
i have a lot of thoughts while watching the nero-sporus scene but i didnt take note so here we go, some idea i can still remember lolļæ¼
first, theyāre wearing the exact same striped dress shirt
the way tom telling the story after talking to greg about *greg getting a magical castle*, itās like he wanted to remind greg that he is still the emperor nero and greg is still his slave boi
also the fact that he (and the writers) chose the story that nero killed his wife instead of another version (his wife died from childbirth and nero used sporus to cope), i feel like they really wants to show that tom is this š close to gone girl shiv right now. he looked so tired, so *i want a divorce* lol (i was even surprised to see him wearing wedding band this ep tbh)
āIād castrate you and marry you in a heartbeatā ,,,do i even need to explainš itās like tom saying heād rather be with greg than anyone else in this situation (whether bc he thinks he can still control greg or whatever, *itās complicated). itās the closest thing we ever have to tomās love confession and coming out.
then greg responded with a silly rabbit smile, thinking it was a flirtatious joke as always before he slowly realized that āno this is not a joke. tom is dead serious,,, shitā. he felt it. he felt somethingās cooking and he was WAITING FOR IT. he even ASKED TOM FOR IT.
but then tom immediately turned to wrestling (very intricate ritual) imo itās like his first instinct after saying something that is NOT STRAIGHT AT ALL is to conceal it with toxic masculinity, violence, anger. it reminds me of water bottle scene last season,,, internalized homophobia.
this made the next part even more heartbreaking
greg: i donāt wanna do it.
tom: *after mocking him* NEITHER DO I, GREG.
tom also doesnāt want to do it, but do what? bc thereās so many things he didnāt wanna do right now. i feel like this sentence was more of a general statement to everything heād told before.
he doesnāt wanna go to jail.
he doesnāt wanna castrate and marry greg (= he doesnāt want his homosexuality, more equal power dynamic⦠not really but i hope u get the point lol)
BUT he also doesnāt wanna start this wrestling fight (= he doesnāt want to conceal his homosexuality, have power, dominance, anger)
and yet he still ended this exchange with more angry talk of business and executive blah blah blab. thereās A LOT to unpack here. tom is having a BIG big gay crisis.
im so normal and not losing my mind at all

a hypothesis iām ready to put forward is that shiv would always choose roman over kendall but roman would always choose kendall over shiv
