See this comment has a valid point, we shouldn’t overlook a serious issue and the author had the opinion that the post they’re responding to was downplaying something they take very seriously. Passion and concern for a social issue! That’s so admirable it almost brings me to tears! It’s absolutely amazing to stand up and fight for something you believe in and I applaud this person for having the guts do to this! But my worry is when we start to phrase things like this, that we’re not really spreading the good we want to. Something about saying “your shitty feminist” anything is really harsh. In fact, the entire post reads as very acidic.

I get it, really I do, that being upset with an issue that you have to get intense, but I don’t think we need to get this personally hostile with people and speculate on their “shitty” beliefs. It just beats down the same people that are trying to explore their own opinions and find a voice of their own. Sometimes, yeah, they need to be exposed to different opinions but like this?

I’m just curious because, well because I don’t know. It looked like it took a couple of seconds to type out of anger instead of a way of trying to engage someone in form of alternative thinking. I don’t expect it all to be sunshine and roses, but was this necessary? That’s not rhetorical. I’m just wondering if anyone has anything to say on the matter.

Sometimes it’s easier to just say that you are mixed. Sometimes it’s easier to state all of your ethnicities, instead of just one because then you have to explain why you “look that way”, especially when random strangers are grilling you and you don’t know how to get out of the situation (this happens a lot to mixed people, even me.) I mean, we get asked “What are you?” or some variation so freaking often sometimes that we don’t even really pay attention to whatever answer we give… the answer is so far removed from who we see ourelves to be that we can’t relate to it. 

I think that racial identity is a lot more complicated than a lot of monoracial people can really understand so some mixed person saying the “wrong answer”, or legitimately othering themselves from whatever their poc-ness is, can put a bad taste in their mouths and mess it up for all of us mixed people. I usually identify as a black biracial/black mixed race/black mixed woman… whatever feels the most comfortable to me at the time. It’s important that you know that I am mixed because the experience of being mixed is so intrinsic to my experience of being a black person. I mean, the experience of being mixed is so different than the experience of being monoracial that we have a blog with almost 5000 people who feel like they need a safe space solely to talk about being mixed, right? It’s not the norm… why wouldn’t that be a part of my identity? Otherwise, I am gonna get asked a bunch of times “What are you?” and if I make the “mistake” of saying biracial, solely for my own convenience, I am just being “conviently black”. It’s a lose-lose situation, all around.

Btw, I know that you specifically asked about mixed black people but I suppose that this could extend to any mixed person.

Most of the women I know are over 176 pounds. That is a fuckton of the population. 176 pounds, on anyone 5’5” (national average height of a woman) or taller is NOT THAT MUCH WEIGHT. And you’re telling me that these women, a large percentage of the population, are being lied to about their pregnancy prevention????
