there's a cheeky grin on her face as she soaks up des's praise. chaz is pleased as punch in this moment, too caught up in des's expression to pretend to be coy.
"well, they don't call me the, uh, rubik's cube master for nothin'!" nobody calls her that. even so, she pushes her glasses back up her nose to try and contain her excitement. it always felt nice to impress someone, even if it inflated her ego. "you scrambled it really well, too," she compliments, throwing a wink, "and i, um, appreciate the effort."
chaz points to the toy, tapping it gently. "you should see me finish it in person next time. if this seemed cool, just wait 'til you, uh, see it for yourself!" she pauses and squints as if examining des. "you seem like you have a special talent, too, you know? whatcha got for me?"
green eyes tracing the details of chaz' face fall the few precious inches from her gaze to her mouth, and the words out of it are forgotten the second they leave. des is too caught up in admiring, thinking-- both of which she does a fraction too hard. she's still smiling, heart thumping steadily at an invitation she isn't sure chaz meant to extend; "you should see me finish it in person next time."
des' softened gaze finds chaz, and she leans forward, absentmindedly tracing the grid of the toy with her eyes. even with an hour and a coffee, she isn't sure she'd have the patience nor capability to do it.
"there's not really much special about me," she replies, a smile revealing a hint of teeth. her words are honest, though self-deprecating; she heard it enough growing up to believe it. "unless you have a cherry stem that i can tie into a knot with my teeth. or, well... that's about it. what about you, hm? anything else you're good at? besides, you know, rubik's cubes."

"it's no problem, really." wendy glances around the diner. a few of her coworkers know about her side gig, but none of them really take it seriously. she doesn't expect them to interrupt this meeting, but she understands how des must feel. it's isolating to know the truth while everyone else treats the truth like a conspiracy theory. isolating and exhausting. des wears her exhaustion like a shroud. wendy hopes to help her shed that shroud and leave it in the past. but first she needs to her des's side of the story.
des speaks with the conviction of someone who's sure she's right. wendy doesn't know des's dad or brother, but she believes her. if a bear wandered into their camp, her dad would've handled it. they aren't just lost in the woods. and...
i'm not crazy.
wendy's heart sinks a little as des finishes explaining. it settles into a pit of melancholy that temporarily covers her determination. her brows pull towards each other. she frowns.
"i promise you, des." she shakes her head. "i don't think you're crazy." she briefly places her hand atop des's. "and i'm so sorry you're going through this."
she scoots to the edge of her seat and leans on the table. "i want to help you figure this out. do they always go to the same campsite? have you gone and taken a look for yourself? police won't have done much with it if they ruled it an animal attack."
‘‘it's the first thing i did,’’ des replies, tone soft. ‘‘usually, they go to different campsites but the last few years they've frequented the same one. it's closer to home, so my dad likes it. and it looked the same as it does every other time. other campers go there, too, and not a single one of them saw a fucking thing.’’
she picks at her freshly painted nails, cascading shards of blue onto the table. it's a habit she can't break, & one that seems to put her more on edge than anything, even ignoring the mildly skittish glances she passes around.
des never used to be paranoid— but she can't help but feel as though this is a cover-up for something else, something they don't want her to find. & part of her does regret bringing wendy into it, because what if it is? what if she's right and the police are lying?
all the weird shit wendy's covered, this must be an outlier. an ordinary drop in a pool of otherworldly things, and that's part of why des went to her in the first place. she's willing to believe in things most people wouldn't, and she's the one person who's looked at des with a shred of pity.
‘‘all their things were intact. there wasn't any blood, no bodies. it's like—’’ des stops, collecting a breath. ‘‘it's like they disappeared without a trace. have you ever heard of anything like that happening before?’’
Chaz is rubbing her eyes as she looks at her laptop screen, vision all but glazed over as she squints at the newest question of the night.
“What is the chance of a duck always watching you?”
She clicks her tongue, scratches her head, and cracks her fingers before typing out a mighty reply of: “it’s never less than zero. I’d say at least a 3% possibility. also, this is a reminder to get some rest.”

her nights often get like this— tired beyond comprehension, blinking sleep that won't abate but refuses to slip her under its cool tongue— then she rakes her brain. a litany of questions too heavy for the night to shoulder slip away from her, and instead she focuses on the quiet outside as late night settles around her.
then, she messages chaz. it's like clockwork these days, how often she's asking the woman outlandish questions no one else would give her the time of day with. but chaz does, and des barely represses the smile shaping her lips as she reads the fast reply. of course, she thinks fondly.
"google said zero, is the 3% me specific?" she replies, smiling to herself. then, finally taking some well-needed advice & relaxing into her covers, adds: "and thank you for the reminder, i was about to spend three hours doom-scrolling reddit. hope you're getting your z's in, too."
