#FIELDWORK ASSIGNMENT
THE PRICE OF SUGARĀ
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share a border. Global inequality has caused Haitians to Migrate to the Dominican Republic in search of better jobs to survive. They think they are going to get better jobs or better living standards, but it is always the same thing, to cut cane. The Vicini, a powerful family in the Dominican Republic have taken over the country and have an influence on the government.
Vicini uses his Power to get the Haitians to pass the border. The soldiers who guard the border cannot do anything because they fear him. There is usually someone who convinces the Low class that there is hope for a better life across the border. The Haitians are stripped off their documents and papers and are usually carried to their destination at night so that they have know idea where they are and are unable to escape. They are taken to large plantations where they will cut sugarcanes for the rest of their lives. Without their papers they are considered illegal and would not be able to survive outside the plantations without getting arrested.
Father Christopher who is the priest of Los Llanos, sees all these injustices and decides to change the system. He first carried out what could be equivalent to Ethnographic Fieldwork which is a research strategy in cultural anthropology that involves living and interacting with a community of people over an extended period of time to better understand their lives. He experienced their Culture and could even speak their Language.
Father Christopher stood firm and was very determined to end the slavery. The Dominicans had always thought that the Haitians were darker and so they would look down on them (because they were the only people they could really look down on) which is Racist. Children of the Haitian parents who have no papers, have no Citizenship, they were neither Dominicans nor Haitians in fact they were invisible to the government. After some improvements were made, Father Christopher began to receive threats from some Dominicans who supported Vicini. They simply couldnāt establish Hegemony. Father Christopher stood firm and didnāt leave because the Haitians depended on him. The Price of sugar is quite an emotional documentary, people do not deserve to be treated that way. It is sad that the ignorant Dominicans also contributed to their problems.
