What You Care To Die For?

The blonde took a deep breath before she made her ay into the great hall, her dress flowing behind her and her curls bouncing gently. So many different emotions flowed through her body as she mingled amongst the other students - she knew what she had to do, but planned to stall as long as she possibly could. Trying to calm her nerves she grabbed a glass of punch that was most likely spiked, the alcohol burning her throat as she drank. “I hate this stupid thing, this mask is annoying.” Speaking to no one in particular, the blonde took another sip from her cup. 

For the most part Regulus had stuck to his one corner of the room since the ball had begun, it wasn’t particularly entertaining but given that his only other option was to socialize with a horde of nearly drunk people he would stick to his small corner thank you very much. To his credit though he did at least try to keep up a conversation when any of them staggered his way, there was no point in coming to this thing if he didn’t put some effort in. When not caught up in conversation the Slytherin found himself content to just observe his fellows, of course he couldn’t pick out who was who but it was sort of fun to try. He was in the process of deducing whether the person spastically dancing in the middle of the great hall was that Hufflepuff he’d helped earlier when a voice caught his attention. “It’s not all that bad, kind of entertaining really. Give it some time and you may find yourself enjoying the evening and if time doesn’t work I’m sure that punch will help” at least that seemed to be the mindset of some of the other students who’s punch had that same unmistakable smell of more than a hint of some form of alcohol.

“Surely I have not.” Topics such as abductions and murders weren’t something she wasn’t really interested in, no matter what brought upon such events. In fact, she seldom read a newspaper and when she did she tended to just put it away after scanning the first page. But of course Regulus would know about such things, even if they involved pixies. “I find quidditch exciting,” she said with a shrug, “but not as exciting at that masquerade ball that is coming up. I’m still not sure whether I’d like to go, though, I just like the idea of being anonymous for once.” Narcissa commented, glancing down at her books as if to keep herself from making eye contact for too long. Surely he would see through her eventually. At his words she nodded with a smile, if he had to be that careful with his words then that meant that it whatever he was up to was both important and possibly dangerous. That could be the only explanation for the need of secrecy, at least it did when it came to her family as of late. “Alright, I’ll prove you wrong and show you I’m actually very patient.” The smile that had adorned her features faltered at his comment. Did he know about the way she had been sneaking around talking to both mudbloods and blood traitors? Would he dare to tell? Regulus had always been far more observant that she had ever given him credit for, and of course that was now proving true. “I don’t know whatever makes you think I’m lying, Reg.” She said with a shrug, her smile quickly returning as she met his gaze. “School is my only priority around here, isn’t it?”

“You should go to the ball, what with it being about the unimportance of blood status if you don’t go it could affect your standing with Dumbledore and other professors. Better to avoid the trouble” Of course Dumbledore and the other professors knew of the Black family view on blood purity but they didn’t seem to mind much as long as the children weren’t hurting others or making too much of a fuss, his mother had been less than enthused upon hearing the theme and had initially forbidden him from attending but after explaining his reasons for going she’d sided with her son and settled into the idea. Regulus gave Narcissa a pointed look as she protested her innocence, a look that spoke of just how much he wasn’t fooled. “School should be your only priority but it isn’t nor has it ever been, you’re much too curious about other things to let school be your only interest. You’ve also never been a good liar, at least not to me. I won’t press you but I will give you some advice, when you lie make sure there is some truth behind what you’re saying. Even if it’s only a sliver, it has to be believable.”

“I’m not small.” With a roll of her eyes, the girl grinned, punching his shoulder softly. “I’d never be caught dead wearing blue, ever - it’s not my colour.” 

“Ouch” Regulus called out softly in mock pain, raising a hand to his shoulder as if to soothe it. “Well, then I suppose when I’m looking for you at the ball I can safely assume any girl in a blue dress is not you.”

“If only that were true.” He replied with a grin, leaning back in his chair. “That’s a pretty fair assessment although the added benefit of masks may lead to more shenanigans. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up making just as much mischief as that lot over there.” He motioned back towards the marauders before sighing. “I think I will. Why give others another excuse to ridicule?”

“That would actually be fun to watch, I’m sure you could come up with some clever tricks that they couldn’t even dream up” It would be incredibly entertaining to see the tables turned on the marauders, them being the victims of pranks for once. “I know what you mean, no point in setting tongues wagging when to avoid it all it takes is to make an appearance at the ball. You should go, it would be nice to have someone of a like mind to judge people with. Might lessen the suffering and make the evening a great deal more entertaining.”

“That would be a pretty good understanding.” She replied, nodding along. “And if it’s a ball, there’s no way I’m showing up in everyday wear… no matter how much I hate dressing up.” Hestia shoved her hands in her pockets as she looked up at Regulus. “So are you going then?”

“As I said, your choice” It was a polite way to express that ultimately it didn’t matter to him much at all, he wasn’t even sure why he’d bothered anyway. “Yes, I am. The professors are strongly encouraging all the students to go, I prefer to stay on their good sides so although I don’t particularly enjoy these things I’ll be making an appearance.”

“I suppose I’m not required but it’s expected…” She bit her lip before nodding. “Well it’s nice to know I’m not alone. Then again I love a good party, I just HATE dressing up.”

“Well from my understanding all you’re actually required to wear is a mask so you don’t have to dress up, you may look a touch out of place but given that no one will know it’s you unless you choose to tell them I hardly think that matters. Every year at least a few Hufflepuffs just turn up to these things in their pajamas.”

Regulus’s laughter was infectious and Severus couldn’t help but laugh along. “Alright then, Potter loses his hair… Lupin’s wit dims, Peter… well Peter can stay the same, and your brother keeps his looks. Guess you really did get the brains in the family.” He mused the pursed lips, noting the look on the other’s face. “So are you making an appearance at the masquerade?”

“Oh how easily the mighty fall” The amusement from earlier crept back into his voice, the dark thoughts pushed to the back of his mind for the moment. “I don’t particularly want to but I suppose I should, I always find the balls to be tedious awkward hormone charged things but I can only miss so many before my cousins come and drag me out of my room. The downside to the entire family being in one house, they know the password. Though I have to admit I do find the whole ‘masquerade’ idea to be fairly interesting, it could be a good opportunity to see who people are when no one knows it’s them. Will you be attending the ball?”
