โGo on,โ Mary urged Race. She was grateful for the chance to speak with Jack alone, sure, but she also knew that Race probably needed a breather. She was grateful heโd taken on more responsibility around the lodging house, but that didnโt mean she liked that he had to. โThank you, Race.โ
Mary returned her attention to Jack. She pulled a chair over to be next to him, and sat. Now that it was the two of them alone, Mary felt herself soften. She knew Jack had to have been hurting to take a tonic, no matter how gross it had tasted.
โTell me the other guys look worse,โ Mary said quietly, after a moment of silence. โThey got you pretty good, Kelly.โ
"Anytime." Race said, then left, to relax by playing cards with some of the other newsies.
Jack looked at her once they were alone. "I dunno. That ain't entirely clear." He sighed, head in his hands, let his guard down now.
"They sure did." He mumbled, shifted, clearly uncomfortable. "Don't s'ppose they said somethin' about when this thing has effect? It's disgustin'." He continued, shuddered, the taste lingered.
โShouldnโt be too long,โ Mary reassured, though she didnโt know quite how long the tonic would take before it took effect. She hadnโt thought to ask the pharmacist, and was feeling rather foolish for it now. โLet me get you some water,โ she murmured, standing quickly to fill the water glass again.
It soothed her nerves to be busy. Mary had never been one to sit still, not even as a girl. She handed him the glass of water, and returned to her seat, drumming her fingers against his knee absentmindedly. โYou want to tell me what the fight was over?โ She asked.
โI donโt think you wouldโve gotten into it over somethinโ stupid,โ Mary said. She, tactfully, did not add that what she considered stupid and what he considered stupid were different things. โWhat happened, Jackโ
Jack gave a nod, which he quickly regretted, winced as he did. "I really hope ya is right. 'Cause this ain't fun." He mumbled, accepted the water, drank it without hesitation.
"Not really? 'Cause... ya might think it is stupid." In reality, it was, even to Jack, but it was just defending someone.
"They was tryin' to take money, an' papes. An' that ain't fair. It ain't nice. I ain't about to just watch." What made it all so much worse, at least to Jack, was that it had been Crutchie that they had gone for, who didn't stand much of a chance on his own.
"Happened kinda as Race was sayin', only it escalated. Ain't even sure who these fellas is. They ain't newsies. But goin' after a fella who can't even defend himself against 'em? That ain't nice. Five fellas on one. Cowards." He said, clearly still angry about it.
Mary sat rigidly in the chair, but she listened to him attentively. A fella who canโt defend himself. These other boys, whoever they were, mustโve gone after Crutchie. Crutchie was a good kid, and an even better friend, but Jack was right- he wouldnโt stand a chance in a fight. It was a low thing for somebody to do.
โYou did the right thing,โ Mary said, finally. โI donโt know that Iโd have done different. Going after Crutch is low work.โ
She pressed her lips into a thin line, thinking it over. Mary didnโt expect the boys to have been newsies, but it made her frustrated not to know who had gone after one of her friends. โOne of you should sell with him for a while,โ Mary continued. She was Crutchie would protest, but she couldnโt think what else to do. โUntil we know those kids got the message.โ
โย ย well ,ย ย thatย didnโtย work .ย ย anyย planย c ,ย ย genius ??ย ย โ enj to courfeyrac (plan c probably stands for Courfeyrac ๐)
COURFEYRAC FROWNS. His plan would have worked, if everyone else had only done what they were supposed to. Naturally, no one had been quite as optimistic as him. As a result, they were still left without a way into General LaMarqueโs contact.
โAlways a plan c,โ Courfeyrac quips easily, already throwing his arm around his friendโs shoulders and tugging Enjolras along down the street. โI just need a moment to think of one.โ

"Wait, let me finish losing to (name)."
"You know I can hear you, right?"
"Absolutely not."
"No way we're leaving you behind."
"There's no way (name) would do that."
"Yes, (name), you're very handsome/pretty and everyone should be in love with you."
"My mistake. You're handsome and pretty and everyone is in love with you."
"I'm pretty cute, though."
"Don't listen to them. These guys love me."
"We tolerate you."
"Oh, we're not friends."
"Nice of you to show up."
"Glad to see you're making yourself at home."
"Make yourself maybe a little bit less at home, huh?"
"(Name) really likes you, you know."
"I care about them. You hurt them, you answer to me."
"They're a pain in the ass. Not 'my' pain in the ass. Just a pain."
"(Name) is a good kid. Be nice to them."
"No, if (name) says we jump, we jump."
"Do you trust them?" / "You have no idea."
"Don't listen to 'em. They're just jealous."
"You wanna talk about it?"
"You like him/her/them?"
"I'll take a look."

"So (name)'s good for it?"
"You vouching for them?"

IT SPOKE TO HOW DIFFERENT this Henry was from his father that his chief concern was for his mother, and not for himself or his claim to the throne. He was his fatherโs sole legitimate son, and he was confident his father would not cast him aside so easily. After all, what was the alternative? Henry Fitzroy, a baseborn, bastard son? Parliament would not stand for such a usurper claiming Henryโs birthright, born as he was from a legitimate marriage, with royal blood on both sides.
So, he did not quite share Conallโs urgency, although perhaps he should have. He was concerned for his mother. He knew the matter was most distressing for her, and he wasnโt sure what he could do to comfort her. His fatherโs motive was no mystery- Henry was not so ignorant to the ways of court that the Lady Anne had gone entirely unnoticed- but could his father really believe that she would be a better queen than his mother?
โMy father will not seek to diminish my claim, friend,โ Henry said, with all the confidence of a prince who had never known real disappointment, nor heartbreak. โHe isโฆfollowing his heart, and not his head, at present, but surely he will come to see sense.โ
Conall stares at Henry for a long moment, as if mulling over his next words carefully. He has seen...similar things to this. One's right to the throne can be tossed away just as easily as anything else. Edward's children, illegitimate because he married another woman before Elizabeth and didn't think it would get out (and perhaps the word getting out had plenty to do with Conall, but...that's beside the point). The point is that Edward's heir had his claim one day, gone the next. While Henry doesn't seem concerned for the moment, if the king married Anne and their marriage was deemed legitimate...
That, then, could cause plenty of problems.
"Let me speak plainly. Your father is not going to come to his senses. He is utterly infatuated, and while I have tried to speak to him into thinking logically, well, you know how that goes." Conall sighs, crossing his arms. "There are plenty of things coming into play here, Henry, and I worry.."
He worries, alright, and part of him wonders why he couldn't just go through a single fucking reign without any ridiculous bullshit like this. "These next few months will be crucial. You best keep to yourself and those you are sure you can trust. You'd be surprised at how quickly people will turn on you once they realize you no longer have anything useful to them."
Plenty of things coming into play? Henry didnโt understand Conallโs meaning. His father had an heir, as well as a spare in Henryโs younger sister, Mary. Of course, more siblings wouldโve been ideal (and truthfully, Henry had always wanted a younger brother), but Godโs will took strange manifestations. Who was he to question it? Henry knew enough of the world to understand that affections couldโฆwane, between his parents, but to consider divorcing his mother, a princess born of Spain, for a second daughter of an English nobleman was absurd. He couldnโt believe any of it would come to fruition.
โIt is the Boleyn summer,โ Henry repeated the words heโd heard from his motherโs own lips. His father had never stayed with any mistress long. Heโd always cleaved to his queen. โHer shine will fade, Conall, as have the others.โ
Henry feels sorry for Conall. His father would do well to heed his advice, as Henry himself tries to do. Conall has lifetimes of experience- why would Henry not trust his council? And, now that Henry is thinking on it, the Howards and their kinsfolk have been particularly cool to himโฆ
โYou, and my sister, then,โ Henry says decisively. โThe Spanish ambassador, and the Poles, also. Thomas Moore, perhaps.โ He stops his list. Itโs pitifully short, but that is all Henry can think of as being unquestionably loyal. โAnyone else?โ

Really, Mary couldโve smacked Jack upside the head. She probably wouldโve, actually, if he wasnโt already dealing with a sore head. โNo,โ Mary said slowly. โI donโt want you to stay up all hours, Kelly. Just long enough for me to make sure youโre alright.โ She wasnโt sure how long that would, exactly, but Mary would handle that later.
Mary nodded at Race. He wasnโt one to lie- not well enough to get by her, at least. She wasnโt sure lack of time had much to do with that, seeing as he left time to play the horses, but Mary bit her tongue. She didnโt need to deal with both boys aggravated.
At his last sentence, her interest peaked. โOh?โ She queried, leaning back against the wall for a momentโs rest. โWhatโd you hear?โ
"I is alright." Jack protested, clearly frustrated with the situation. He shifted in his seat, set the half full glass down, a bit too hard.
"Sure, that's why ya is keepin' your eyes closed, huh?" Race stated, as Jack gave him a glare. "Ya ain't helpin', Race." Race just grinned, not taking the glare seriously.
"Heard there was somethin' goin' on, by the bridge, an' that it was lookin' like it was some fight. Lots of fellas involved, an' all that. Ain't sure what caused it, but only 'cause folks sayin' different things, an' I didn't see it. Came there when folks was gone." Race began, trailed off for a moment.
"What folks said, was that someone was out cold for a bit. Willin' to bet we's lookin' at him." He continued, calmly, and very matter of factly,
Mary chuckled at Raceโs answer to Jackโs protests. She was grateful for the back-up. Jack might not have been in dire straits, but he certainly wasnโt well. Insisting that he was wouldnโt make it truth. She studied him for a moment, looking for any hint of bruising to his face. Finding none, she turned her attention back to Race.
โOut cold,โ Mary repeated. Sheโd had a younger brother, a lifetime ago- she knew boys fought, and often. Still, being knocked out was a different beast entirely. She stewed on that for a moment, before turning to Race. โWe should get him seen by somebody,โ Maryโs tone left little room for argument. She wasnโt even including Jackโs opinion in the discussion. โIf he was knocked out, maybe we should be getting him medicine or somethinโ.โ
The frown on her face deepened. Mary wasnโt in a panic, not really, as Jack really did seem to be alright. That didnโt ease her annoyance with the situation. She snatched her shawl off a peg by the door. โWill you stay with him if I go out?โ
"Yeah. Out cold." Race repeated, watched Jack, then back at Mary. Knocked out was bad. Or could be. "It ain't that-" Jack began, protest cut off as he noticed Mary's tone.
"C'mon Jack. Just let her go get ya a doctor. If ya ain't gonna do it for your own sake, do it for Mary's. 'Cause ya know she's gonna worry herself sick 'bout ya." It was a bit of a stretch, maybe, but Race did know Jack's weaknesses.
"I ain't got no money for a doctor." Jack protested, looking between them.
"Stayin' right here. That's a promise, I ain't goin' nowhere. An' I'm gonna keep him awake." Race stated, watched her for a while, walked up to her, slipped some money into her hand. It wasn't much, but if he could help, he would. "Keep it. Pay the doctor or whatever, I want ya to have it."
Mary wrinkled her nose. She did not, as a rule, take money from anyone. The trait was a holdout from her time at the Queens Home for Girls. She didnโt like to be in anyoneโs debt, to have anything someone could hold over her head. Sheโd learned that lesson hard as a girl.
โIโm not taking your money,โ Mary said, a bit harsher than sheโd meant to. She fiddled with the fringe on the shawl around her shoulders. โIโve got it handled, Race. Foreman pays well enough.โ
She sighed, and glanced at the stairs towards the dormitory upstairs. Mary didnโt like to leave the younger newsies to their own devices more than she had to. Sheโd taken on an odd sense of responsibility towards the lot. โIโll be back as soon as I can,โ Mary said, already halfway out the door. โKeep an eye on things here, will you?โ
"Ya don't have to." Race said, took it back, and pocketed it, understanding. "He's gonna be fine." He added, whispered it, a hand on her shoulder, trying to be reassuring.
"Ya don't gotta hurry." He continued, more than willing to keep an eye on things. He returned to the chair, determined to keep an eye on Jack, and the younger kids when they returned.
Jack had, in the meantime, closed his eyes, and as Mary prepared to leave, is on the verge of going to sleep, which Race noticed.
"Oh no ya don't. Stay awake." This earned him a muttered protest from Jack, inaudiable, but sounded a lot like 'shut up an' let me sleep, Racer.'
Race grabbed the ice, pressed it against his head, if nothing else to wake him up. A little rude, but it got the intended effect.
"Keepin' an eye on things, an' mr Stubborn over here." Race reassured, pulled the chair closer to Jack.
Mary gave Race a small smile in thanks. She was grateful he hadnโt argued. She was too tired after the long day- twelve hours at the garment factory, then immediately dealing with this when sheโd gotten done- to really argue. โI know,โ she answered, hoping she sounded more confident than she felt. Jack wasnโt too bad off; sheโd seen worse, truthfully, but that didnโt mean she liked the situation.
Sheโd made quick work of her trip down a few blocks towards the pharmacy. The man behind the counter had recommended a tonic meant to relieve all kinds of aches and pains, and not sure what else to do, Mary had agreed. Sheโd tucked the bottle into the paper bag provided, and hurried back to the lodging house.
Mary re-entered the lodging house, and squeezed Raceโs shoulder as a greeting. โPharmacist gave me a tonic for you,โ Mary said to Jack, rummaging through the cabinet for another glass. โSupposed to ease up your headache.โ
Finally, sheโd found a small, rather dented, tin cup. She poured some of the tonic into it, and put the bottle and its remaining contents in the cabinet. Mary was sure theyโd find use for it again. She handed Jack the cup. โDrink,โ she said, her tone leaving scant room for a discussion. She turned to Race. โAll alright here?โ
Winifred has to concede that her mother has a point- a rather good one, actually. Taking a test half-asleep has never helped anyone. She takes the cup of coffee into her hands, letting its warmth spread up from her fingertips. Itโs overloaded with cream & sugar, just how she likes it. She takes a long sip.
โI donโt not like chemistry,โ Winifred protests. Thatโs true enough. It isnโt the worst class sheโs ever taken. โItโs just a lot of memorising.โ
That was yet another skill that her elder siblings could master with ease. Unfortunately for Winifred, decidedly human as she was, she did not have such luck. โThatโs what tricky, I think. Were you any good at it when you were my age?โ
"Sweetheart, you're allowed to dislike certain subjects," Esme replies, a touch of amusement feeding her words. "Ironically, I absolutely detested math. I only really found an appreciation for it after school, and even then... it was a couple of decades later. Apart from the basics, we were meant to learn ladylike things; cooking, cleaning, sewing..."
Esme takes a seat opposite Winnie, fingers absent-mindedly sorting through practise test papers and compiling them into a make-shift pile.
"I was a rather forgetful child." Esme snorts in recollection of her younger self. "I don't think it helps that science has done nothing but accelerate since I was a kid. It's far more understood and intricate than ever before. But I believe in you and so does your father and siblings. Don't compare yourself to them, you are unique and brilliant, Winnie."
โI canโt dislike chemistry if I want to go into medicine, Mom,โ Winifred replied easily. She wasnโt so sure she wanted to be a doctor like her father, but she was sure she wanted to do something akin to it. Winifred liked the idea of helping people, and she had always liked science- at least, before she had to memorize the periodic table.
She watched her mother reorganize her study papers. Mom had always been good at that; cleaning up Winifredโs messes, and setting her head straight. Winifred was fairly certain sheโd have gone crazy by now without her.
โYou were forgetful?โ Winifred asked. That was the most unlike Mom trait she could think of. Her mother was the most thoughtful person she knew. Winifred blushed as she continued, feeling a little foolish for not having thought of the advancement in science since her motherโs schooling. โI hadnโt thought of that,โ she admitted. โIโd be a horrible student if they graded me on ladylike things,โ Winifredโs nose wrinkled at the idea. โYouโd have to homeschool me.โ
@officerwaltons โ Prince Arthur & Prince Alastair
โItโs an honor to meet you, Crown Prince Arthur of England and Ireland,โ the redheaded prince said, bowing deeply out of respect for the fellow crown prince. They were technically equals, but he knew that a lack of a bow would be seen as very disrespectful in England.
โIโve never met another of the same title as me, it is rather thrilling,โ Alastair told Arthur with a beaming smile as he stood up. โIโm honored that my father sent me as ambassador to your lovely kingdom.โ
Alastair offered his hand to Arthur to shake, his own hand rather slender yet long and elegant, like that of a musician. โIโve always wanted to see England, and I feel blessed that your invitation is allowing me that,โ he told the other prince with the same broad grin.
โI hope we find friends in each other, Your Highness,โ he added as they shook hands.
Arthur returned the prince, Alastairโs, broad grin with a polite smile of his own. Though Arthur did not share such a trait, the princeโs outgoing nature reminded him of his own younger, Henry. Arthur made a note to himself to introduce the pair. He was sure Henry would benefit from another prince to model himself after.
โThe honor is mine,โ Prince Arthur said, bowing at the waist himself. His father would perhaps not be thrilled by the act, but Arthur did not see any harm. Bowing to recognize Alastairโs proximity to one throne hardly diminished Arthurโs closeness to his. โWe are pleased to have you at court. Did you journey well?โ
Arthur, as the eldest of two sons of a fledgling dynasty, had never been allowed the luxury of international travel. The idea of attending a foreign court intrigued him, and he envied the Alastair the opportunity. โYou and your people will always find England a fair and loyal friend,โ he answered confidently. Arthur intended to keep his word, as he was sure his father did also.

โ We must live through this day, so fight! โ
โ Youโve hurt me enough. โ
โ You wonโt live through this day. โ
โ We must move quickly, we don't have much time. โ

โ Our comrades will not die in vain. โ
โ Mercy is a skill more of this world could learn to use. โ
โ The blood we shed, it never dries. โ
โ I am neither man nor mythical. โ
โ You're a warrior meant to lead the rest. โ
โ That's just like you, why should I be surprised? Selfish and prideful and vain. โ
โ Every time someone dies I'm the one who is left to deal with the strain. โ
โ This way, you won't plague my life. โ
โ What a waste of effort spent. โ
โ At least I know what I'm fighting for. โ
โ Since you claim you're so much wiser, whyโs your life spent all alone? โ
โ This day, you lost it all. โ
โ Is it nature or divine or a blessing in disguise? โ
โ Our home's in sight. โ
โ Brace for a storm, the likes of which weโve never seen before. โ
โ I'll ensure that we prevail. โ
โ We're taking too much damage to survive. โ
โ At this rate, we won't make it out alive. โ
โ Please don't tell me you're about to do what I think you'll do. โ
โ You've heard the legends; this proves they're true. โ
โ Don't forget how dangerous the gods are. โ
โ How much longer til your luck runs out? โ
โ I still believe in goodness. โ
โ I just don't wanna see another life end. โ
โ You're like the brother I could never do without. โ
โ Donโt forget how much weโve already faced. โ
โ I need to talk to you in private. โ
โ I can't have you planting seeds of doubt. โ
โ I ask for your assistance so we at last can go the distance. โ
โ Sounds too easy, what's the catch? โ
โ Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. โ
โ The end always justifies the means. โ
โ Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. โ
โ Time for me to be the father I never was. โ
โ Why are my eyes and my heart and my soul so heavy? โ
โ It isn't very often that I get pissed off. โ
โ I'm left without a choice. โ
โ Iโve gotta make you bleed. โ
โ I need to see you drown. โ
โ Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves. โ
โ You are far too nice. โ
โ I've got no mercy left to give. โ
โ The line between naรฏvetรฉ and hopefulness is almost invisible. โ
โ I am your darkest moment. โ
โ What have you done? โ
โ Any last words? โ
โ There's only so much left we can endure. โ
โ I'm not a player, I'm a puppeteer. โ
โ I canโt sleep now knowing everything we've done. โ
โ I must say what a brilliant speech you gave. โ
โ I don't know who you are nor why you're here. โ
โ One wrong move, then you're done for. โ
โ All I hear are screams, every time I dare to close my eyes. โ
โ I no longer dream, only nightmares of those who've died. โ
โ I am the prophet with the answers you seek. โ
โ I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but it's no longer you. โ
โ How has everything been turned against us? โ
โ How did suffering become so endless? โ
โ Do I need to change? โ
โ What if I'm the problem that's been hiding all along? โ
โ If I became the monster, and threw that guilt away โ would that make us stronger? โ
