Maud is a little hesitant about taking her in -- Helga is a werewolf, after all, and Maud is fiercely protective of her village. she doesn’t know if she can trust Helga enough on a full moon, although Helga insists she won’t be anywhere near the village when it happens.Maud finally takes her in, puts her on a one-month probation and eventually decides that yes, Helga can handle herself on a full moon and she takes Helga in as an apprentice -- though she still makes sure to keep an eye on her as the full moon nears.
Rowena and Helga weren’t the only children in the village growing up. there were others, including Emmeline. Emmeline never quite liked Helga very much, and she often tried getting Rowena to come play with them without Helga -- why should a servant’s daughter get to play with them when they were of different statuses? needless to say, Emmeline never particularly liked Helga very much, and on her part, Helga tried to stay out of her way.things didn’t change very much as they grew up. if anything, they got worse: not only was Helga the servant’s daughter, but she was also a werewolf, and Emmeline had even more reason to make snide comments about her whenever she passed.Helga never faulted Rowena for spending time with Emmeline and her friends. she was, after all, the servant’s daughter, and Rowena wasn’t.
