𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝘩𝑖𝑛𝑔.

the wolf had been on a rampage all morning.  once hearing word of the bodies in town , he’d sprinted straight for the site.  his pull as an alpha lead him to want to protect his pack , and as the town’s sherrif he needed to close off the site as soon as possible.  though most of those in the p.d. were humans , he was sure a few of them could catch the man growling throughout the morning.  grey eyes had watched on as his personnel worked as his mind reeled.  who killed them ?  a vampire , a wolf , a witch ?  but why ?   

he certainly was not approachable as he took his lunch break in a cafe , seated by a window so he could continue to survey the scene.  half a meaty sandwich was in his stomach when he was interupted.     ❛  if what you have to say isn’t important , i suggest you leave.  ❜  

𝑡𝘩𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝘩𝑒𝑟 a complete headache. when catriona finally made her way through town to open her shop, she realized that her keys went missing, sending her on an hour long search until she finally remembered where she dropped them. it meant that she had to return to the café that was so close to the crime scene it made her stomach twist into knots, but it had to be done. the streets were too crowded for magic today.

she groaned in frustration when she noticed that her former table was already taken by someone else and she bit down on the inside of her cheek to contain her frustration when he reacted like that. “ i’m sorry, sheriff, i know this must be the worst moment to interrupt you. ” she sighed. “ i think i lost my keys here earlier, do you mind if i take a look? i promise this is only going to take a second. ”

         “I mean I guess.” Nadya didn’t really feel anything about the murder of two people found that morning. She didn’t know them as cold as it may sound. “But it wasn’t so … “ She trailed off for a moment before looking at the taller brunette. “What do you mean by it’s no surprise? This sort of thing happens a lot here?” 

𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑛'𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑑, not exactly. catriona knew that it would be much easier to go through life with the attitude that the brunette seemed to have, but ever since she was a child, her family and friends always told her that she cared too much --- she simply couldn’t help it. the witch couldn’t even pretend that she was okay with people being murdered in the town she resided in, whether she knew them or not. “ i heard things, but i don’t really know. ” she was quick to shake her head. “ i only moved here a couple of years ago. ”

      “Oh, right. I mean after this morning, I guess people are rattled up and unfocused.” Nadya agreed on that before looking back and didn’t see the figure anymore. “Um, tension is really in the air, isn’t it?” She wondered if the witch before her knew the victims.    

𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑎𝑓𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑎𝑦 that catriona felt quite upset about the murders. it wasn’t the first time she encountered the subject, but she had never seen it on such public display. “ it is. ” she agreed with the female. “ but it’s no surprise, is it? maybe it’s wrong to think of it this way, but... that could have been any of us. ” a family member, a friend, a loved one. and what if this was only the beginning?

quinn tried not to laugh, as if the obvious needed to be stated in the shadow of two bodies swinging in the breeze. “bad? you could say that.” she shook her head in mock disbelief. murder was always bad, death usually was. but this? this was sadistic, a message but for who and from who? that was the question to ask, and get answered.

𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝘩𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 rather difficult to look away. did they know? did either one of them see their brutal end coming, when they woke up this morning? she gulped hard and forced herself to focus on something, anything, else. amber eyes wandered to the brunette and she took a deep breath before she spoke again. “ did you know them? ”

            “ Margrethe? ” Nadya’s eyes instantly when to her wrist where another had grabbed her to stop her in her tracks. “No. Wrong girl.” She pulled her hand back hard taking it as the other stared at her. The brunette was the spitting image of Margrethe ( though not completely similar to her her, the resemblance was there ) , unknown to her and those who never got the chance to meet the witch. Nadya kept walking a bit faster this time before she looked back and found her body colliding with another. “Oof! Sorry. My bad. I should be paying more attention.” Nadya apologized looking up at them. 

𝑡𝘩𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 her right out of her thoughts and straight back to reality. catriona groaned at the abruptness of it all, but she forced her lips to curl into a smile when the girl apologized for it.  “ don’t worry about it, it’s fine. ” she waved it off. “ i believe we’re all a little unfocused today. ” it was difficult to feel anything other than distracted after seeing those bodies at the town’s square.

“Well, that’s inconvenient.” she replied as she watched the police from a distance, “What a fucking bummer start to the day, am I right?”

𝑡𝘩𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 of putting it --- and not necessarily the one that catriona would’ve chosen. inconvenient. was death ever convenient? truly? the young witch wrapped her arms around herself, almost as if she needed a reminder to hold herself together, before she spoke. “ you are right. i doubt any of us feel like having this day now. ” but life didn’t come with a pause button, no matter how sad it was. “ do you have any idea how this happened? ”

the screams that sounded when the bodies were found echoed through her apartment. she lived above one of the shops in the square, and after putting on some clothes, she walked outside to see the chaos. it smelled horrible, but her curiosity overshadowed her usual tendency of self preservation to stay inside. “i wonder what the stories will say.” she mumbled, mostly to herself, but loudly enough that anyone nearby may think she was talking to them.

𝑑𝑖𝑑 𝑖𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 what they would say? people were so dependent on the news and the web of lies that most journalists were forced to spin these days, but what would that do? nothing. the answer was nothing. “ they are going to find something. ” catriona mumbled. “ they always do. even if they are not going to tell the truth. ” a pity, really. the two that were murdered deserved justice, no matter what people wanted to think about them and the legacies they left behind.

she’d heard the screaming as she was leaving the hospital, fully prepared to be called back in for some emergency. but no call came which meant she just went home. but instead of her usual routine she got dressed and headed into town, curious to know what happened and how it might affect her new — lifestyle. the animosities between species were still a mystery to her in many ways and this could be an opportunity to learn. “what happened?” she asked the nearest bystander.

𝑡𝘩𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 enough time to learn everything about a town, but catriona always thought that she knew enough about it to deem briar creek safe. standing by the town’s square now, two bodies dangling over their heads, taught her how wrong she was. this was not a robbery gone wrong. it wasn’t a terrible accident. it was murder. the worst kind of it. maybe that was why she winced when she heard a soft voice and the witch tried to clear her throat before she replied. “ i don’t know. i was on my way to work when i saw them. ” her voice was barely above a whisper and she hated herself for it. “ whatever happened here, it’s bad. ” cat added, mostly to herself. things like this could start a war... and a war was the last thing any of them needed in their lives, wasn’t it?
