Helena slides a crumpled button-up across the polished countertop towards Stanley; her tone isn’t derisive or judgmental. It’s factual. Although, truth be told, she can’t keep the light note of amusement out of her voice. The button-up is several sizes too large for Stanley, and for her as well.

"Come, dear Watson,” Helena said, a sparkle in her eyes as she leaned over to grab her briefcase, gaze cast back to catch Stanley’s own, “the game is afoot.”

There was mirth on her lips, sparkling there like suppressed laughter: it was all a game to her. The mystery of this town, her put-upon companion, the story waiting here to be observed and then written--all only part of the game, all with its own rules and misrules. She felt sly and puckish chasing this mystery, more youthful than she’d felt since her tenure at the Warehouse in London. It was positively freeing, to be back in the world, putting her quick wits to good use, catching the elusive and mystifying by the tail only to yank the sheet off and prove it fallible after all.

She waited for him to catch up to her, to rise from his seat and meet her beneath the tinkling bell above the cafe door, to lose the dark look on his face and realise she meant only to help.

“Beautiful,” HG breathes--perhaps purrs--and she really means it, too. She leans down over the case, splaying delicate fingers over the top of it as if her hand might pass through the glass and directly onto the object, as if she might then cradle it to her chest like a baby and coo at it. For just that moment, she seems completely unaware of the other presence in the room, the INTERPOL agent who so obligingly fetched her her prize.

How nicely these little arrangements continued to serve her, even after so many years of disuse.
