“  i  could  ,  but  what’s  the  fun  in  that  ?  ”  he  smirked  ,  head  tilting  to  the  side  as  he  eyed  his  sister  .  “  that's  bullshit  .  i’m  his  brother  ,  i  should  be  the  priority  here  .  ”  he  wouldn’t  even  be  surprised  if  that  was  exactly  where  the  eldest  sinclair  sibling  was  .  wesley  truly  was  the  thoughtful  one  .  “  why  would  you  want  a  refund  ,  though  ?  you  could  never  get  a  better  younger  brother  ,  ”  he  replied  ,  filled  with  smugness  .  but  she  was  right  ,  he  did  love  them  .  a  lot  .  “  well  ,  ”  he  doesn’t  say  anything  else  ,  just  smiled  sheepishly  . 

“  never  said  it  was  ,  ”  he  retorted  defensively  ,  and  a  little  too  fast  for  it  to  be  believable  .  over  the  years  ,  he  had  gotten  better  at  lying  to  his  father  ,  but  the  man  still  knew  him  too  well  to  let  something  like  that  pass  .  he  shook  his  head  when  his  father  tried  yet  again  to  change  his  mind  .  august  knew  better  .  “  if  you’re  not  going  to  buy  me  a  drink  ,  i  really  don’t  want  to  talk  about  this  anymore  .  ”   that  whole  topic  was  too  much  of  a  wasp  next  .  “  well  ,  the  world  sucks  .  ”

“  talk  about  a  letdown  ,  ”  he  shook  his  head  . “  the  dude  should  go  to  jail  for  that  dumb  excuse  .  “  he’d  have  been  better  saying  he’d  been  watching  mike  tyson’s  old  fights  or  something  .  ”  then  again  he  was  sure  he  could  come  up  with  a  good  excuse  for  whatever  the  crime  .  or  his  father  would  bail  him  out  before  it  even  got  to  court  .  “  i  don’t  think  it  is  anymore  ,  good  riddance  .  but  it  has  traumatized  enough  people  that  it  will  go  on  for  a  long  time  .  ”

“  to  be  fair  ?  not  really  ,  ”  he  quipped  .  he  too  would  quit  himself  if  he  ended  up  getting  fat  .  he  was  sure  he  had  had  nightmares  that  went  that  way  .  “  how  can  you  ask  me  that  ?  don’t  you  know  how  in  love  with  you  i  am  ?  ”  he  joked  easily  with  the  older  boy  .  “  wanna  be  a  part  of  the  best  team  ashcroft  high  has  ever  seen  ,  huh  ?  ”  he  asked  smugly  .  “  senior  year  is  around  the  corner  ,  man  .  i  can’t  wait  to  be  done  .  ”

to  anyone  who  asked  ,  he  would  say  his  mother’s  presence  in  town  didn’t  bother  him  .  that  he  didn’t  care  that  she  was  there  .  but  the  truth  was  that  that  close  proximity  made  it  harder  for  him  to  suppress  his  fears  and  doubts  .  it  brought  everything  up  and  the  boy  didn’t  quite  know  how  to  deal  with  it  .  “  i  know  why  she  did  ,  dad  ,  ”  he  admitted  finally  ,  shaking  his  head  .  “  i  don’t  need  to  hear  it  from  her  .  ”  and  he  did  .  or  he  was  sure  he  did  anyway  .  “  can’t  you  like  pay  someone  and  make  her  leave  ?  ”  he  knew  it  wasn’t  the  case  .  some  things  not  even  money  could  fix  .  

august  waited  for  the  story  with  a  smile  already  plastered  on  his  face  ,  he  knew  this  ought  to  be  good  or  his  uncle  would  have  just  skipped  on  sharing  it  .  “  wait  .  lycanthropy  ?  what  kind  of  case  was  even  this  one  ?  did  they  just  find  a  dilacerated  body  or  what  ?  ”  and  he  laughed  despite  the  gruesome  image  he  was  painting  .  “  you  know  what  ?  i  blame  twilight  .  ” 

the  boy  shook  his  head  ,  eyes  downcast  as  fingers  drew  random  patterns  on  the  bar  counter  .  “  i  don’t  want  to  know  ,  i  don’t  care  .  ”  but  the  truth  was  that  he  was  too  scared  to  know  the  truth  .  he  didn’t  want  to  sit  there  and  hear  the  woman  confirm  all  his  fears  .  that  he  had  been  too  hard  to  love  even  when  he  was  just  a  baby  .  “  coming  back  and  messing  everyone’s  lives  is  not  making  it  better  ,  dad  .  ”  no  ,  she  wasn’t  doing  that  for  them  ,  she  was  doing  it  for  herself  .     

“  better  than  me  ?  ”  he  asked  with  a  cocky  grin  .  “  not  really  .  ”  she  had  made  it  too  easy  and  he  couldn’t  just  miss  an  opportunity  like  that  .  “  and  then  he  went  and  said  shit  like  you  gotta  live  to  be  able  to  write  about  life  ,  ”  he  rolled  his  eyes  .  “  being  cupped  up  inside  with  a  book  is  not  much  living  ,  lexi  ,  ”  he  pointed  out  .  “  you  gonna  make  me  invite  you  to  this  party  ?  a  fucking  house  party  ?  ”  he  chuckled  .  “  fine  ,  if  you  wanna  have  some  real  fun  ,  come  to  the  party  .  i’ll  be  there  .  ”

it  was  hard  to  imagine  his  father  not  being  the  dad  he  knew  ,  the  guy  who  was  always  present  .  he  still worked  a  lot  ,  but  he  always  put  he  and  his  siblings  in  front  of  everything  .  and  he  didn’t  know  if  he  could  believe  he  was  that  bad  .  but  it  was  the  image  of  caroline  as  a  good  mother  that  really  bothered  him  .  “  yeah  ,  so  focused  on  them  that  she  left  them  .  ”  because  of  me  ,  he  didn’t  say  .  “  she’s  not  ,  ”  he  shook  his  head  .  he  was  not  ready  to  accept  that  .  maybe  never  would  .  “  it  doesn’t  matter  what  it  was  ,  she  made  her  decision  and  she  can’t  just  take  it  back  after  all  this  time  .  she  will probably  leave  again  anyway.  ” 

the  boy  rolled  his  eyes  ,  now  that  was  one  thing  he  didn’t  quite  enjoy  about  the  girl  .  always  going  on  and  on  about  school  and  however  it  was  that  she  wasted  her  time  .  “  let’s  not  pretend  any  of  that  is  better  than  my  company  .  ”  everything  from  his  tone  to  the  smirk  on  his  face  screamed  the  confidence  of  a  boy  too  used  to  get  everything  he  wanted  .  “  you’re  killing  me  here  ,  lex  .  honestly  might  die  of  boredom  just  listening  to  your  so-called  plans  .  ”  and  that’s  where  they  were  actually  different  .  “  can’t  a  guy  ask  his  friend  an  innocent  question  ?  ”

“  that’s  bullshit  ,  dad  ,  ”  he  shook  his  head  .  he  wasn’t  about  to  let  his  father  take  the  blame  for  this  .  “  that  bitch  never  deserved  you  .  ”  august  didn’t  think  a  lot  of  men  would  do  what  his  father  had  done  ,  step  up  to  raise  three  young  kids  on  his  own  and  then  not  speak  one  bad  word  about  the  woman  that  had  left  them  all  .  he  knew  he  wouldn’t  .  besides  ,  the  teen  was  pretty  sure  if  anyone  was  to  blame  it  was  himself  .  his  mother  had  been  happy  to  stay  with  the  family  for  years  and  then  he  was  born  and  suddenly  it  was  gotta  go  .  “  it  wasn’t  your  fault  ,  ”  he  added  .  “  how  nice  of  her  ,  ”  he  replied  sarcastically  .

august  didn’t  care  what  people  thought  about  his  dad  ,  just  like  he  didn’t  care  about  what  they  said  about  him  .  all  that  mattered  was  that  he  was  the  best  father  anyone  could  have  and  he’d  always  look  up  to  the  man  .  but  it  did  make  him  think  about  the  conversation  he  had  heard  ,  the  one  he  still  couldn’t  quite  make  out  the  meaning  .  he  knew  his  father  ,  though  ,  right  ?  it  had  to  have  been  a  joke  or  a  misunderstanding  .  “  i  don’t  care  that  she  has  a  new  family  .  i  feel  bad  for  them  to  have  to  deal  with  her  .  besides  ,  we  never  needed  her  ,  we  had  you  ,  ”  he  shrugged  .  and  his  father  had  always  been  more  than  enough  .  “  it  would  have  been  better  if  she  had  chosen  one  of  the  hundreds  of  thousands  of  other  towns  in  the  country  ,  ”  he  complained  .  

“ god  no  .  i'd  rather  not  feel  forty-seven  by  the  time  we’re  done  .  ”  he  wished  that  was  an  exaggeration  too  .  “  how  would  i  know  ?  you  only  mention  it  every  time  there’s  an argument  , ”  he  joked  .  his  sister  had  always  been  the  more academics oriented of  the  family  ,  while  august  had  almost  driven  his  ap  calculus  teacher  to  an  early  grave  out  of  frustration  for  a  brilliant  student  who  could  do  so  much  more  .  but  he  still  got  those  as  so  what  did  it  matter  anyway  ?  “  yeah  ,  where  is  he  when  i  need  him  ,  ”  he  sighed  .  “  i  should  get  a  refund  for  the  siblings  i  got  .  ”  lies  ,  he  wouldn’t  trade  those  two  for  anyone  .  “  hey  ,  color  is  important  .  but  i  might  need  some  stuff  .  ”  he  should  really  start  getting  ready  for  the  semester  .

august  had  been  on  high  spirits  as  he  made  his  way  to  the  grill  and  bar  with  his  teammates  ,  a  wide  smile  and  relaxed  posture  of  someone  who  had  just  beat  their  biggest  rivals  --  even  if  it  had  been  just  a  scrimmage  .  but  that  all  disappeared  when  he  walked  into  the  woman  .  the  smile  faltered  and  for  a  second  he  just  stared  .  she  looked  older  than  the  pictures  his  father  had  shown  him  when  he  was  a  kid  ,  but  still   very  much  recognizable  .  he  should  have  expected  it  happen  sooner  or  later  ,  there  were  just  so  many  places  in  ashcroft  someone  could  go  .  “  seems  like  we  arrived  at  the  perfect  time  ,  boys  ,  ”  he  called  to  his  friends  ,  smile  back  as  if  nothing  had  happened  .  he’d  have  hated  to  share  the  place  with  her  for  longer  than  a  minute  .  “  please  ,  don’t  let  me  get  into  the  way  of  you  leaving  .  the  whole  town  knows  that’s  all  you’re  good  for  ,  right  ?  ”  he  commented  bitingly  , sidestepping  and  walking  into  the  place  .

august  shrugged  ,  unbothered  and  unshamed  .  yes  ,  maybe  he  was  but  that  bravado  had  a  reason  behind  it  .  many  reasons  ,  really  .  “  don’t  tell  me  you’re  still  upset  about  that  ,  ”  he  rolled  his  eyes  as  if  he  hadn’t  already  known   that  .  “  what  were  you  expecting  ,  armstrong  ?  breakfast  in  bed  ?  you’ve  been  watching  too  many  romcoms  .  ”
