Sirius had codependency issues when it came to James. Since they were eleven, he talked to him every night before bed. Azkaban didn’t change that—except now, James wasn’t there. Only the ghost of him, the one Sirius clung to in the dark, the one who never spoke back. And every night, with no one to hear him, he whispered sorry, sorry, I'm so sorry until his voice was gone.

I wonder how often Sirius blamed himself, how much he apologised to the James in head for allowing them to get fooled. For not agreeing to be the secret keeper. For not realising that the likelihood of Sirius allowing to get killed was much less than whoever else he entrusted with the weight of carrying James, Lily and Harry's fate betraying them. And, in his head, both were already highly unlikely.

So why in the world did he fool himself into thinking James would be safer with anyone else, when Sirius would spend every single one of his breaths fighting to protect him, to live for him. How could he allow himself to entrust Peter for the sake of some scheme, when deep down he knew that the greatest ploy was that no-one truly knew the extent of his love and loyalty to James Potter, meaning he would always be ten steps ahead anyway.

So it was all for nothing in the end.

I imagine these are the type of thoughts Sirius was plagued with. They're the reason why he voluntarily submitted to getting imprisoned in Azkaban. The guilt accompanying them is why he stayed for 13 years.
