Nicole Arbour's Ignorance on Weight Gain
Iâm sure many of seen or heard of the heinous âDear Fat Peopleâ video posted by Nicole Arbour this week, where she gladly ridicules overweight and obese people for being just that and calls it âcomedyâ. Obviously body shaming of any kind for any reason is not okay, but I want to point out one thing she said in particular and explain why sheâs wrong.
In the video, she claims to âexcludeâ people with certain medical conditions and says âgenetics play a role to a degreeâ. Here is where the problem lies:
Every overweight person has a certain degree of an endocrine disorder called insulin resistance, or pre-diabetes. This can be brought on by a separate endocrine disorder (such as PCOS), slower metabolism, and any degree of overeating that causes the person to gain weight outside of their ideal range, just to name a few. More weight gain causes a more severe degree of insulin resistance, causing even more weight gain. Itâs a vicious cycle.
In short, insulin resistance causes even more weight gain because the insulin does not function properly and fails to properly lower blood glucose levels, releasing more insulin, which turns into fat, particularly in the abdomen. It also gives a sort of false sense of hunger. Since the blood glucose level is not being properly controlled by insulin, the body thinks itâs not getting enough of those kinds of nutrients, causing the person to crave and hunger for carbohydrates, both simple and complex.
Therefore, when Nicole Arbour claims to not be addressing people who are just slightly overweight, or as she so delicately puts it âhave more cushion for the pushinâ, sheâs not. Since all overweight people have a certain degree of insulin resistance, sheâs talking to everyone who even goes slightly above their BMI recommended weight.
Letâs take a look at an example of another disorder that causes weight gain. Earlier I mentioned PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. This disease affects an estimated 10% of all women, half of them not knowing they have it, and causing weight gain in around 30% of them. This is brought on by genetics combined with hormone disrupters added in food (that arenât necessarily made obvious to the consumer, ex:ânatural flavorsâ) along with a predicted many other factors. Basically, PCOS is brought on by forces outside their control.
Now letâs just take a glance at some of the symptoms and conditions associated with PCOS:
-infertility (#1 cause of infertility in women)
-weight gain, which leads to insulin resistance, which leads to type 2 diabetes
-depression
-memory loss
-black hair growth aka hirsutism
-hair thinning or hair loss
-mood disorders
-pelvic pain
-irregular or no menstrual cycles
-acne
-sleep apnea
-dramatically increased chance of heart disease, heart attack
These are just a few of the main things. People with PCOS, among others, have enough to deal with without having Nicole Arbour shamelessly bully them.
In short, Nicole Arbour has no authority to say or even act like she knows what constitutes weight gain because of a medical condition. So people who watch this video and rightfully feel triggered by it should consider the source. It comes from a place ignorance and you shouldnât take advise from an ignorant person or feel bad about yourself based on things said by an ignorant person.
Excuse me, Nicole Arbour, let me just pick up the knowledge I just dropped.
