he even spent ten years growing up in england so he can rock a mean british accent

actually the sweetest person ever born ok

looooves to travel but has also been super excited to be back in america and virginia beach aka home

although tom has no ties to the British aristocracy like his “fictitious-but-more-famous cousin” fitzwilliam darcy, tom is in fact half british

his mum was born and raised in the charming hamlet of moreton-on-marsh

his dad was born and raised in virginia

they met when tom’s dad did a semester abroad in england, during college

the pair endured a long distance relationship when he returned to america, believing that if they could survive that, they could survive anything

meanwhile, tom’s dad graduated college and started working, saving up for a family

when he’d saved enough, tom’s dad returned to england, married tom’s mum, and the pair spent their honeymoon touring europe

after the honeymoon, they moved to virginia beach as tom’s dad pursued his career and his mum started hers

soon, the couple welcomed a son, who they named tom

it wasn’t exactly happily ever after for them, though

as both parents focused on their jobs and his mum found herself missing england more and more, things got rocky between his parents

tom’s dad, who had impulsively told himself he was in love with his mum,  in an act of rebellion towards his parents who wanted him to marry a nice southern (american) girl, was realizing the reality didn’t shape up to what he’d thought

tom remembers those years as some of the happiest of his life, but they came to an end when his dad up and left

tom was eight

moving to england was a paradigm shift, but his british relatives were as kind, generous, and hard-working as his american relations had been and he quickly learned to embrace the charming little town that was now his home

tom’s mum reconnected with her old flame and the couple soon married

tom’s step-dad was a total contrast to his spoiled, moody, impulsive father - he spent all his time looking out for others and trying to improve their lives however he could

he was a firefighter and a literal hero and tom hero-worshipped him

this relationship, too, came to a tragic close when his step-father was killed in a car crash with a drunk driver

overall, tom took as positive a message from the changes in his life as one could

rather than being bitter or angry, he realized that life was short and one had to make the most of it; rather than feeling alienated, he realized that good people are everywhere; rather than feeling victimized, he realized the true value of generosity

tom is in fact that most optimistic, upbeat, and kind person you’d ever want to meet

he’s the sort of guy who helps old ladies cross the street and leaves anonymous gifts for people who just need a little pick me up

he’s basically the best friend you could ever ask for

still, he’s also trapped trying to live up to the impression left by the hero-worshipped (step-)father of a ten year old

ten year old tom thought his step-father could do absolutely anything and trying to live up to that image means tom, well, can’t ever measure up to his own expectations bc he’s not a superhero

when it came time to attend university, tom chose to return to america and, after that, settled in his old hometown of virginia beach where he’s been ever since

tom was not in virginia beach for the past summer when chaos erupted amongst many of his friends, because he had traveled to underprivileged countries to build houses with a group of volunteers…because that’s literally how he spends his vacations

has kind of a wry wit

don’t mistake this for any kind of cynicism though he’ll honestly keep giving you chances as long as he’s still breathing

honestly has gotten taken advantage of so many times

lbr if it weren’t for drew, tom would be jobless and therefore homeless and would probs be sharing a couch with owen selznick, living in drew’s living room

fortunately, drew covers for him at work and tbh tom probs doesn’t know just how much he owes him

tom sometimes gives amazing advice, but he also sometimes gives terrible advice bc he’s maybe a little ~too optimistic and a little ~too altruistic

he means well every damn time and whatever choice you may make, you can be sure he will back you to the hilt bc he’s never given up on anyone ever <3

kind of a wise-cracker sometimes but doesn’t have a mean bone in his body

if he were a british dad, he’d probs be jude law from the holiday

instead he’s an american reporter and he’s...a total weirdo whom i love honestly

laughs at himself most of the time

he and kara are the dream team of awful dates (her stories still beat his every time though)

they’re thelma and louise, and 90% of strangers are brad pitt

honestly it’s a problem bc he’s attracted to the “bad” girls who need saving bc he wants to help ppl so bad 

but they see him coming a mile off and know just how to play him and, well, honestly steal all his money

’aw, man, he only has $52 and a gift certificate for frozen yogurt. figures.’ ~at least one of the women he’s dated after stealing his wallet tbqh

honestly what he might be in love w for real is trouble

also btw tom is obsessed w frozen yogurt...and just...yogurt in general

anyway, tom has gotten his little heart broken so many times omg

and like he’s honestly just a german shepherd puppy that someone left out in the rain

but he keeps on trying bc his heart is pure

always brings jane coffee without fail

and makes dumb jokes at her

he’s a great writer and an avid reporter and if you get his attention for a story or something he’s absolutely tireless in the pursuit of the truth 

but he’s all here for the pursuit of good!!!!!! and honestly the stories in va beach just aren’t ~pressing enough to hold his attention for the most part when there are people out there he could be helping at any given moment smdh

he just wants to be out there ~doing something~ mostly

like i said he’s actually in love w trouble but he doesn’t even realize it #whoops

chaotic good

if you need him, you have 100000000000000% of his attention and he will do everything in his power to be there for you

if you don’t, he’s probs off helping someone else but he’ll still drop everything for you

often is the only person laughing at some dumb joke he made but that never discourages him tbqh

always apologizes to inanimate objects when he bumps into them

it’s kind of a miracle he’s not so much worse off than he is honestly

it’s a testament to his friends

honestly prayer circle for the friends of tom darcy rn

calls everyone ‘ma’am’ and ‘sir’ until he gets to know them/gets told to do otherwise

opens doors for everyone

uses words like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’

total gentleman

worries about the people he loves 24/7
