Parker Ito’s Artist Statement

Before reading the artist’s statement I initially thought it was going to be a boring, typical version that I have seen a million time, but with about some pretty cool art. I was not expecting to experience the artist statement, I was prepared to instead read one. The use of internet art as a means to get your ideas about art, and explaining what his art is was a fascinating experience. I didn’t know that it was ok to do such a thing, internet art is breaking all the traditional rules of art and art history.

The meme is an interesting creation that can make makes us all laugh, or make a commentary on current situations that are going on in the world, or simply talking about trending topics on social media. I never thought about the way that the meme was able to promote Bernie Sanders, or that there could be a meme candidate. Memes used as a major influence in social media isn’t a new thing, considering that television, radio, and advertisements were essentially the same idea, but the meme seems to hold a stronger grip over the blackhole called the internet. The internet has more reach to everyone around the globe than other ways of getting information out, and its instant access. It’s boggles the mind the way that an image can take the world by storm and go viral in a matter of seconds. I also found the article interesting in the way that Lauren Kaelin adds the aura of a constantly reproduced image back in through painting the meme. It reverses the theories that Benjamin talks about in his writing The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.
