Thinking about Chapter 4 for Cardigan, and I'm really enjoying this... not quite enemies but ill-acquainted people dynamic I've written for Ryder and Ryland... so fun. Haven't started chapter 4 though

I love to think that Colts line of "You need CARBS, Tom!... Your brain runs on glucose!" is him remembering something Ryland has told him a bunch. Especially when working out or prepping for a movie.

Holland March and Jackson Healy character analysis
Hey guys, welcome back to my "first watch character analysis"
This time we'll actually go over TWO characters, Holland March and Jackson Healy.
Holland March:
Holland March is a buffoon of a man. All of his revelations that he has regarding the case of Amelia he completely finds by accident. He is a highly depressed man and chronic alcoholic. Anytime that he can grab a drink he will grab a drink, which essentially means that the entire time in the movie he's drunk.
For a good portion of the movie he is wearing a white shirt with some form of yellow floral pattern on it, so this is now the third character with yellow association I am doing for a Ryan Gosling character. What is refreshing about all three of these characters have a yellow associated with them though, is the fact that the yellow symbolizes something different every time. For the most part. Most of the time in this movie when he's wearing that yellow shirt he has a blue over jacket, and we'll go over the blue next because the blue is far more prominent for his character than the yellow but I feel the yellow floral shirt really needs to be mentioned.
We talked about with Ryland's post how yellow symbolizes cowardice, and that's very much the case for Holland. The first time he meets Healy because he is in his house threatening him, he immediately gives up and gives his information up. Anytime there's any form of pushback, Holland is the first to give up and or hide.
Where that gets funny, is with his blue association. Holland is an incredibly loyal character. Even if his working with Healy was reluctance at first because Healy broke his arm, he continues to back up and support Healy anytime he can. Blue symbolizes loyalty, depression, and honesty. We can see multiple times throughout the movie is that because Holland is a bumbling idiot, he is incredibly open and honest to a fault. To the fault so much that it almost got them killed like five kinds on separate occasions because he just talks and talks and talks. But there's also very clearly issues that he's struggling to deal with that are not forth with.
We learn from Holly that Holland has at least some amount of guilt for their house burning down because he doesn't have a sense of smell. We can also likely assume after the house burned down is really when his alcoholic tendencies picked up. That can be a major sign of depression, but even despite that he tries to do good and tries to raise Holly to do good.
I didn't notice any animal association with him, unlike Driver and Ryland, so nothing to go over there.
Jackson Healy
From the moment that we're introduced to Jackson Healy we are introduced to this incredibly confident man. He is almost the exact opposite of Holland, which is why they're pairing works. Not even as a comedy, but as humans.
Pretty much the entire movie Healy is wearing blue. Which yes we did discuss that blue can mean depression, but it has other characteristics that I didn't list with Holland because they didn't apply to Holland. Blue can mean authority, commitment, loyalty (again), and depression (again).
Despite all of Holland's bumbling, kind of respects him? Out of the two in the duo, Healy is most definitely the one in charge. He has more of the skill to handle any sort of confrontation they might have, and he has the confidence to handle it well. After the two men break into his apartment to beat him up and try to kill him to find out where Amelia is, he goes and seeks out Holland because he's confident in Holland's detective skills, and because he already knows Holland has been on the case looking for Amelia before he made him stop and then hired him to do it again... coincidentally this is also about the time in the film when Holland starts to wear blue! Meaning ✨️trust✨️ as well!
Healy is committed to try and make sure that Amelia is safe in the end, and even though he and Holland failed at that, and even though there was no payment, he and Holland committed themselves to finishing the case. And they did? Kind of? It wasn't the outcome anyone really wanted, but they got all the answers they were looking for and stop the people that were trying to kill them for doing the case in the first place... mostly...

i just kept thinking about them more, this isn't really like a response or anything, just me musing
March - v quick i'm gonna give him a lukewarm defense, he actually does have some breakthroughs on his own on the case. He isn't completely right about the flight/hotel mix up but he's honestly mostly correct, just not about the destination. Plus he got the Hatrack/Shattuck connection, due in response to seeing a poster, but making that mental jump is actually a skill check there. He is progressing through dumb luck a LOT of the time but he's not completely incompetent... he's just so mentally checked out and boozed up a lot of the time that he isn't really strategic in what he's doing until the end of the movie (barely). But it IS mostly luck lol.
Healy - I love the point that Healy is really confident! But I do think he's also somewhat insecure about his value as a person. It's why he wants to be useful and needed, and he values helping people, and is motivated by that, but he doesn't seem to believe he actually manages to do this much.
March and Healy have such delicious contrasts. They are so similar in high confidence levels, but then March has zero follow through and Healy has great follow through. March has no spine, and Healy is all spine. March has little concept of his future, and Healy also has little concept of his future, they're both just surviving day to day without much dream of whats to come. Healy is figuring out if his life has value, and therefore is somewhat vulnerable to shame to change his actions, but it also means he's putting something on the line when he fights people. March has basically decided his life has no value beyond making sure Holly is somewhat okay, but is a coward anyway, which also means shame is basically rendered ineffective.
And I think what it ultimately comes down to is Healy holds a lot of like, values regarding himself? He doesn't seem to care much about vice or violence (at least amongst those who live like that), but he does believe its inherently wrong for innocents to be harmed, and will act proactively to follow up on this (even if he says its "because I like where I live and I don't want to move", it's exceedingly obvious he just thinks the right thing to do is save a girl's life). He holds himself to a somewhat higher standard - he doesn't drink or smoke, he conducts his business "professionally", he likes to complete a job properly and honestly. Healy wouldn't necessarily like Healy if he was another person, but he'd probably respect him, but think he could do better. His biggest arc in the story is of being pushed to raise his external morals a little higher (Holly's push to not kill), and be a bit gentler on himself internally.
But March is the kind of the opposite. He has a LOT of opinions about how the world around him works, is very judgemental of other people, he understands and values the /appearance/ of professionalism and propriety. But doesn't hold himself to any kind of standard at all, really. He doesn't try hard on cases, he gets drunk on the job and is distracted by hot women, he avoids confrontation, and doesn't feel any shame about it. Holland March would hate Holland March, and he reconciles that by not expecting anything of himself, and drinking. March raising his own standards for himself is the key to him forming some actual motivation and thinking somewhat about the future, not just the current moment.
March sees Healy's proactiveness and initially is very dismissive of it, but is goaded into being part of that proactivity and gets a taste of what its like to put his hands on the wheel of his own life again. Amelia's death is such a crux for him - even though he failed to save her, he was genuinely trying, and I think he felt good about it until she died. And after that, his sense of external justice finally flips into internal justice, and he steps up. He is the one suggesting next actions even though the job is over!
So even though they're both not great people, they do actually end up making each other better. March gets some internal drive, Healy gets some validation. They've even made plans to work together - they're thinking about the future, not just the day to day! And with Holly there to motivate them further in their respective areas of growth (not through shame, but by approving of when they do good), they are on track to continue this trajectory. They aren't going to become star citizens any time soon, but we can agree they're probably going to be better than they were.
This is definitely the analysis of a fan of the movie! Most of my other analysis posts I make off of first time watches, mostly broken down into the repeatedly used colors/animals associated with that character.
They're made off of first impressions, and while I did enjoy some bits of the movie, it definitely wasn't a favorite of mine, which i think also shows in my post 😅
My posts are definitely not anything too indepth, I try to focus on what the visual use of color can tell us about characters, and how often its shown around them.

Im currently writing chapter 5, rewatching the Gray Man as I do so. Court has so much red associated with him. His suit he kills Sierra Four in? Red. Incognito woth the black jacket? Red stripe... guess we know what character I'm breaking down next, with a more thorough and centered view than in the post I made about Ryland. Because Ry's was waaaaay more about thinking of through Coltland Gentry...
Thinking writing a DrivingLessons book were (shocker) Driver ends up living in Rylands apartment building after the events of Drive, pre-Hail Mary. Ryland hasnt started at the middle school yet, and is working freelance at a lab. What he doesn't know is that lab uses dirty money and is actually a front.

I just finished Drive. Let's do a character analysis bc I guess thats what I do.
Let's start with his scorpion motif. Scorpions are silent and deadly (usually). They don't attack unless they feel threatened. Pretty obvious, Casey (seriously, how do people know his name, I didn't hear it ONCE unlike Courtland Gentry which is only said once in the first minute of The Gray Man, but at least we get something else to call him that not his JOB)... Casey doesn't want to be the one to do any of the physical crimes itself. He always wears leather gloves that won't leave any DNA evidence of him in the cars he drives.
His jacket is white with the pale yellow scorpion embroidered on it. Yellow, again just like Ryland, symbolizes his intelligence, but he also brings joy and happiness to Irene and Benicio for their little excursion to the outer city/ creek? I'm unfamiliar with LA. He also has a little hope that but helping Standard clear his debt, Irene and Benicio will be safe.
As he comes to the realization that that isn't possible, he starts willing to be the one to dirty his hands, and we get a visual cue of that with his jacket.
His jacket gets progressively dirtier and blood stained as he starts unraveling. Yellow is also the symbol of betrayal, and Shannon unknowingly betrayed him by giving Nino the information that Casey had his money.
In the end, both Casey and Bernie tried to kill eachother but only 1 succeeded, with Casey leaving the money and Bernie's body in the middle of the lot and driving away.
