He would have loved for Noctis to meet his family when they were still alive. His mother would have adored him, fussing around his son’s lover, pushing plate after plate of Galahdian food into his hand. Selena would have laughed at how stupidly in love Nyx was before rebuking him for all the risks he had taken to keep Noctis alive.

“What else don’t I know about Galahd?”

Nyx blinked over at Noctis, head shifting a minute amount from his unmoving parade rest. He met his wide earnest eyes for just a glance before resuming his forward stare. He was still on the clock, whether or not the superior to his superior was there to distract him or not.

“Don’t know, Highness. You’d have to tell me.”

“Might take a while.”

“Well, as you can see, I’ve got nothing but time.”

Nyx craned his neck to indicate the vast, empty hall he was so emphatically impressed upon to guard with his life for the day. He knew that it was just a precaution against intruders, but it felt kind of hard to feel the gravity of such a task when there was so little in the hall worth protecting. The Citadel halls were usually well-adorned with valuable paintings and busts and hanging memorabilia from ancient kings past.

But this was the servants’ hall, where there was no one around to impress with the bygone artifacts of old royalty. Not even the new royalty passed through here enough to warrant a Kingsglaive watching their backs. Which was why he’d been so surprised when the Crown Prince of all people came scampering up to him. Time to put on his serious face, he supposed.

“What about you?” Nyx asked him. “Aren’t you usually pressed for time yourself?”

“I’m making my own time today.”

It never occurred to Nyx how much Noctis had changed in the years of the war. In his mind’s eye, he was still the sullen but determined twenty-year-old he’d met. Even at twenty, the remaining hints of baby fat clinging to his cheeks, and the way he’d gelled up his hair nearly every day without fail, did nothing to hide the tired look that shadowed his eyes. His cool exterior many had assumed had been borne of pride, Nyx had recognized as one created to shield.

So Nyx will admit this wasn’t his finest move. He’s not entirely sure how he got here exactly but he knows it’s his own fault. He was reckless. Cocky, you might say. “We don’t want to hurt your little boyfriend -” Nyx snorts. “Okay - we promise we won’t kill him,” she says, voice sickly sweet. “But we will you,” says the man, “If you don’t start giving us what we want.” Nyx shakes his head, “Dumb move. Now I know I’m not worth keeping alive. Might as well kill me now.” Because he's certainly not going to tell them anything about Noct.

Alternatively: Nyx didn't expect to get captured while investigating a suspect security threat, but then he never expected them to target him in the first place.

“Marshal,” Ignis’ voice broke through the quiet. “We are getting readings of something approaching.”

Marshal Leonis’ face was dark as he came to the console, eyes scanning the multitude of readings on the computer. “What is it?”

The familiar ache of a headache came over Nyx. It had been days since the Breach had closed, and the headache had been a near constant companion. It tugged and pulled at the inside of his skull. Never painful, but insistent on its annoyance. He screwed his eyes shut as he tried to listen.

Ignis was quiet for a moment, painfully so. “It seems to be a Jaeger sir.”

“A Jaeger ? Shit, I thought we recovered all our remaining Jaegers. Who the hell —”

Nyx felt himself go cold at Ignis’ next words. “It’s the Regalia, sir. She’s headed to the Shatterdome.”

“How the hell can the Regalia even still be standing? Noct — The Breach —” Nyx’s throat was a desert. “He didn’t make it.”’

Today is his thirtieth birthday. “You have two choices,” Noct says, perched on his hips, “Stay in bed or hunt down the rest of the sticky notes. Some of them are extra fun.” “There’s more?” Nyx asks in surprise. “Of course there’s more,” Noct says, “It offends me how little faith you have.”

Alternatively: Nyx hadn't known the pretty boy by the jukebox was his boss' son until it was too late. He has no regrets though.
