Hello
samnichclsâ:
Bobbie nodded in sure agreement. She had been excited about the lanterns ever since Sam mentioned them and compared to the ones in the Tangled movie. Sam didnât mind that she didnât knew the true meaning behind them, there were still a few years ahead before she could explain to her daughter that sometimes people go missing and they never come backâ if she did that now, surely the young girl would think the same would happen with her mother eventually and she didnât need that kind of thought in her home. âWell, thank you,â she smiled, appreciating the womanâs kind words towards her and her daughter, âIâm Sam and this is Barbara, but we call her Bobbie,â her daughter narrowed her eyes at the sound of her full name. âMommy only calls me Barbara when sheâs mad at me,â the little girl volunteered the information making Samâs nose wrinkle. âIâm almost two,â she replied holding two little fingers up to make her point across. Bobbie was eloquent for her age despite stumbling over some words and not being able to properly say others. Sam blamed school for her daughter to be such a chatter bug. âWe didnât put a lantern up there either, we lit it and held it down, just as a sign of respect, but Iâm a marine biologist and conservationist, so this goes against everything I believe,â she pointed to the lanterns in the air. âDo you know the family?â
âYouâre welcome..no problem. Pleasure to meet you Sam and Bobbie.â Nyna returned the smile and matched it with one of her own. âOh my! Two years old? Really?â She said, letting her gaze flicker from the little girl to Sam again. âShe seems really advanced. I mean I donât know how the whole growth chart goes, but Iâve got a feeling youâre wise beyond your years, little one.â Nyna gave a light tug to a lock of Bobbieâs hair. When Sam explained why they hadnât let their lantern go she nodded in appreciative acknowledgement. âHonestly I hadnât thought of it that way. Watching all this must be a bit cringey for you,â she replied. âThereâs got to be other options that are kinder to the environment. I know I once attended a memorial where they released doves. It was beautiful though Iâm not sure if thereâs some special symbolism there.â She paused, taking in some air. âForgive the overshare, Iâm talking way too much.â She shook her head. âNo, Iâm working, but also I wanted to pay my respects. Iâm a journalist,â she explained.Â

He wasnât sure if she was frustrated because she didnât know how to help him or if she was frustrated because he was like this. He understood the latter, he was frustrated he was like this as well, he wanted to calm down, he wanted to breath normally again and not feel so terrible. So he forced his shoulder blades further together, hoping they would offer more realise. âT-thank you,â he said, reaching for the water bottle with shaking hands. He took a large sip, his throat was parched, and he only noticed that now. He took her advice, it was easy to take advice when he had no control whatsoever, he was desperate for someone to tell him what to do. He closed his eyes, he pictures his room, his bed, his iPad, and tried to inhale and exhale with more certainty. The fact that she mentioned anxiety and panic attacks did a whole lot, however. Tim wasnât sure why, but accepting the truth usually went a long way. Someone telling him he had a panic attack often took away most of the terror. This is normal: you have a panic attack. Nothing less, nothing more. He felt a bit better already. âY-youâre not o-overstepping, I-I app-preciate the h-help,â he said. His eyes were still closed.
âGood, good.. Iâm glad,â she said, letting out the breath of air sheâd been holding in. It wasnât like giving advice to someone in distress was her strongest skillset, given her own life was such mess. She felt unqualified, mostly. None the less she gave the man a moment to breathe and settle down before she started gabbing again. âYou seem a little, distressed. Did something in particular happen to trigger you? Are you sure thereâs nothing I can do to help? Anyone I could call for you?,â she asked, stopping to take another breath of her own. She wasnât sure if the break in speech pattern was because of fear or something else, either way she felt bad for the interrogation she just wasnât sure what else to do other than give the man some space. âAgain...sorry. You donât have to answer, I just hate feeling helpless.â She sighed, taking another bottle from her purse, one that held something stronger than water. She took a few sips as she looked out at the water and closed her eyes as the vapors from the liquor burned down throat. In a moment of quiet reflection she wondered if the man was somehow tied to the missing but she kept her thoughts to herself.Â

the lantern felt sort of heavy in his hand. he knew he had an obligation to be there, but he barely knew the people who disappeared. still, he knew something similar had probably happened for his father and brother-in-law when their boat capsized months back. he wondered what it was like then, and why lis was so insistent on coming to this one now.
âfuck,â he muttered as he tried to get the lantern to light. âhey, can you hold this for me?â
By the time Nyna had spoken to a few of the locals, gathered various commentary and insights, her heart was heavy and she had decided she would call it an early night. She was thinking about her what she wanted to do with the content she had gathered. Given she had severed ties with her most recent employer and hadnât officially accepted the offer of the latest, her options ver few and far between. She was organizing the notes sheâd made when she encountered the male. An incredulous eyebrow lifted. âI could do that,â she said and accepted the lantern. âDonât I know you from someplace?â She asked, the edge in her tone softening as she tilted her head taking in familiar features.
Uncle Joe had given a moving speech, there were few dry eyes on the beach and some Fremonters were openly crying. Family he said, and it was true, they were. Now, slowly but surely the lanterns were giving way and hopefully guiding their people home and if they werenât serving their purpose, than at least it made for a beautiful night and an excited Bobbie bouncing in her arms every time a new light was lit. âLook mommy, another,â the little girl said, clapping her hands and grinning widely as a few more lanterns followed the one that was released. It was all very symbolical, and as much as she wanted to explain to her daughter what was happening, she was still too young for the concept of life and death, she wouldnât even have any memories of this when she grew up. Sam gave touched her lips to Bobbieâs temple and watched along with her on their spot on the beach, getting a bit lost in thought, if she was being honest. âDid you have a lantern, too?â Sam raised her eyebrow and looked over to the person who had been unwillingly roped into a conversation with the little girl and mouthed sorry.

Smiles were far a few between these days but Nyna couldnât help the grin that took over the feature when she looked into the smallish face of the child. âNo, sadly I didnât. Arenât they beautiful to look at though,â she answered, figuring the little one might be too young to understand the concept of what they actually stood for. Hell, admittedly, she was struggling her damn self. Not with the concept, but the reason for which they were all gathered on that night. âOh, itâs not a problem,â she waving off the mouthed words of the woman. âIâm Nyna. Your little girl is beautiful and so well behaved. How old are you,â she asked, a smile etching the corners of her lips.

Tim wasnât breathing. He was breathing, but it was hard, it was stained, it drove him from calm back to panic back to calm back to panic. It was a constant battle to focus his mind on getting enough air to his lungs to attain control again. But it wasnât easy. Because despite being away from the group, he still felt the weight of everything. Crashing, pushing him down, making his body collapse onto itself. As if he was caught beneath the waves.Â
His breath caught in his throat when he heard a voice, what followed was a dry sob as he tried to take enough breath to answer the question. Sad yes. Really sad. The family. Of all those people, and he was here making a scene. No, focus. He forced his shoulders back, and as a result fell down with his back in the sand, the rocks, the pebbles. Didnât matter, all he felt was his stained breath, his lungs that started to hurt more and more.Â
âI- I-â he began, barely enough to make one word let alone one sentence. He was overreacting, he didnât know these people, he was just⌠just⌠he shouldnât be feeling like this, there were people were felt worse. âFine,â he said and shook his head.Â
âI...ugh, okay,â Nyna replied, stepping back a bit to give the guy room to breathe, his struggle was palpable. Reaching inside her book bag she pulled out a half frozen bottled water and extended it to the younger male. âMaybe you donât feel up to talking. I get it, itâs okay. I brought an extra water along. Take it, maybe it will help?â She said, waiting to see if he would even reply. âSometimes when Iâm having difficulty, with you know, panic attacks or anxiety in general, I just close my eyes and picture a safe place and breathe. Think of it as kind of an escape.â It was an artform she nearly had down to perfection, âForgive me If Iâm overstepping. Just trying to help.â
EVENT: Bonfire & Lantern Vigil. WHERE: Tortue Cove, Fremont WHO: @elisabethstartersâ (open to all)
âMom,â Hannah began, voice shaking as she reached for her motherâs shoulder, hand coming into contact for only a moment as the woman whoâd brought her into the world jerked away as if sheâd been struck. âMama, please,â She continued, quieter this time, voice pleading as Becky McIvy refused to even look in her youngest daughterâs direction and simply walked off into the crowd. Hannah sucked in a sharp, shaky breath through her nose as she felt the familiar sting of tears prickling her eyes, gaze almost frantically searching as it landed on her father and she, once again, attempted to make contact with the man whoâd told her in not so many words that she no longer had a place in his life and her son never would.Â
âDad!â She called out, almost catching his eye as he looked towards her voice out of instinct, but seeing her had him turning and following in her motherâs footsteps, leaving her shoulders sagging in defeat and her eyes searching the crowd once more, this time landing on her brother and sister standing huddled together, both looking downtrodden and tired. Maybe it wasnât the best time to try and bridge the gap that had separated them since she was 18, but Hannah needed to try. It was more obvious now than ever that while her family hadnât been part of her life for over a decade sheâd missed them and she needed them. But instead of calling out, she approached cautiously, standing back for a moment as nerves washed over her and she swallowed the growing lump in her throat before approaching. âDonny.â She spoke quietly, brows furrowed in concern and eyes shining bright from the ambient firelight and unshed tears, âBrooke, have you-â She was cut off by her eldest siblingâs withering stare, a look Brooke had perfected when they were children and all of a sudden she was 15 again and terrified of the older womanâs displeasure. âHave you heard anything new?â She was able to choke out, gaze tailing down to the ground as she rocked on her heels. âPlease, you guys, pleaseâ She begged, eyes lifting once more to hold a second of contact with her brother before he was pulled away by the arm as Brooke led him towards the rest of the family.
Closing her eyes for a second in order to compose herself as a few stray tears slid past her lids and down the apples of her cheeks, Hannah decided not to cause a scene. The McIvyâs were grieving themselves, full of worry for the two men just as she was, so she wouldnât push. Not tonight. Instead, the brunette turned on her heel and began to head back towards the fire, almost running into someone else as she came to a startled stop, hands coming up quickly to wipe her cheeks dry. âSorry.â She said, sidestepping to avoid getting into the other personâs path, voice shaking with emotion as she sniffled. âGod, sorry. Iâm- Iâll just-â She stopped, taking in a deep breath as she tilted her head back and looked to the sky, âSorry I donât mean to be in the way.â Shaking her head, Hannah slid her hands into her pockets. âAre you alright? Hanginâ in there?â
Nyna had spent most of the day learning what she could of those who were seemingly lost at sea. Researching online and checking various social media outlets she had dug up information on the close family members of each within a few short hours. She had no idea how she wanted to use the information just yet but she knew deep in her bones that there was a viable story here, what it was, she couldnât discern just yet but her instincts told her she was definitely on to something.  She was meandering the beach looking for those familiar faces when her path was cut short. âOh, donât worry, Iâm likely the one who is in the way,â she said, balancing herself so she didnât lose her footing. She took a deep breath and extended her hand. âIâm Nyna. I was on my way to the bonfire. Want some company?I mean if youâre headed that way.â

Tim was able to hold out for about an hour. A hour of wading among the crowds, of listening to people making speeches, hearing their tears, and feeling uneasy with their grief for people who might still be alive. This was supposed to be a support, the lanterns would soon fly and maybe guide the sailors home. Tim saw people drinking, he watched people eat, he hoped to find people who he knew, but his eyes passed through the crowd too quickly. Too anxiously.Â
His body was already pushing him towards the edge of the crowd before his mind realised he was having a panic attack. Reaching the beach he let out a forced laugh and let himself fall down to the rocks, breathing heavily.Â
Bringing the collar of her jacket up around her neck, Nyna sighed, thinking she didnât remember the weather being so unpredictable. Moving through the crowd, she felt herself feeling the light headed. Normally she would have avoided such an event but she couldnât seem to stay away. Perhaps it was the allure of the mystery of what could have happened to the missing. Distracted and sullen, she didn't say anything at first when she saw the male on the bench.  He seemed so overwrought with despair though she couldnât help but speak up after a few minutes and the nervous laughter had passed. Maybe this was something else altogether, panic maybe.  A weak smile gracing her features, âThis is really sad. I canât imagine how the family must feel.â Looking over at the male, she realized she might be speaking to someone close to one of the victims, judging the way he was acting. âIs there anything I can do for you?â

the crew were all entirely wiped; searching all night left then exhausted and freddie gave them the rest of the day off, but he was still raring to go. the boat had enough gas in her to go for a solid six more hours and heâd taken enough naps here and there to be able to function. tomorrow, after they find the missing boat, thatâs when heâll allow himself to sleep. but for now, he needed more people to help him search.
âyou willing to come aboard?â he asked someone on the docks. âsearch and rescue boat is full. i know she stinks of fish, but sheâs seaworthy.â
Nyna didnât have any close ties to the people who had been identified as missing as far as she knew but as soon as she heard the news she couldn't help but find her way down to the dock. There was likely little she could actually do to help the cause but she wouldnât feel right until she at least made some kind of effort. Accepting the invite to join the gentleman on the boat was ironically purely an effort of will. âYea, I am actually. Not sure how much I can contribute here but Iâm guessing another set of eyes wonât hurt the cause,â she answered as she climbed aboard.
