In a New York Minute

It has been quite a long time since I written a post of any length or worth here. It’s more about a busy life and moving on a bit from this space; however, I wanted this story documented no matter what happened. So here goes.

One of my favorite places is Portland, Maine. This past winter I realized it had been quite some time since I’d been there and booked an impromptu trip over Presidents Day in February. I went by myself, and given a new report writing schedule this year, would have to work for a fair amount of that time. But at least I could do that work in front of a fireplace in a pub, rather than my studio apartment.

I worked a lot that weekend and my “reward” was to go to the Irish pub I love up there called Brian Boru. Every Sunday they have Irish Sessions that have a bunch of local musicians come together to play Irish music. I couldn’t wait to go. I also forgot it was Valentines Day. So it was packed with couples. I picked my way through the bar to get to the musicians. I found a corner seat near the music and next to a couple in their 50s. Eventually we started talking. Twenty minutes in:

Wife: “You’d be perfect for Jason!”

Me: “Okay….”

Husband: “Oh yeah! I could see that match!”

Turns out Jason is their nephew who lives in NYC. His aunt texts him immediately: “I have a girl you need to take out.” Within 20 minutes, she convinces him to text me. He says: “I’m so sorry about my aunt and uncle. I hope they aren’t bothering you.”

Two weeks later, Jason and I got drinks in the city. 4 dates later, he offered to cook me grilled cheese after a stressful day at work. Many dates later (the point where you stop counting date), we’ve composed our dream houses together.

I don’t know what the future holds. But I know I like him. And I know I love our story.
