The collection has a nice case of small owls.
"[He]...had an exactness, a perfection, like an apple, an orange, something nature has made just right."
Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany's
I went to the Met Friday and sketched the Head of a Youthful Hercules. There were several other artists sketching there but they were pretty engrossed so I didn't get to speak to them. A boy and his mother sat next to me and the boy started to mimic the action of my hands sketching. I gave him a piece of paper and he drew a table with a little triangle border around it. After they left I overheard an impressively in-depth conversation a docent was giving to a lady and her daughter about Hercules, one which I won't do injustice with my faulty memory. A point of note was that the statue was greek and repaired during the renaissance, the head being part of the renaissance restoration.
I had a little free time and couldn't resist a quick sketch at the museum today. I've really been taking advantage of the whole suggested donation thing. Sketched the Sumatran Rhinoceros and the horse statue in the front entrance.

Leopard @ The Natural History Museum NYC
A Poem for the Taxidermied Animals
Dear Fieldmouse,
I wonder if your little den has eroded
The seeds that you planted are bushes now
Casting their fortunes to the wind.
Dear Raccoon,
I hope you ate the berries that were your favorite
The moonlight glinting on your soft fur
As the juice spilled over your grin.
Dear Pelican,
You kept your beak sharp and your feathers trim
The water left a line that circles your waist
I hope your predators were thin.
Dear Tiger,
Did you feel regret about eating the field mouse?
Beautiful, everyone knows you do what you have to
Survival is never a sin.
I went back to the museum Monday. It wasn't very busy and I found that the top floor is less busy than the bottom two. Pictured: Ox Bones, Bison Skull, Tiger, Leopard.
Jack Rabbit Sketch @ The Museum of Natural History
I drew more taxidermied animals at the Museum of Natural History yesterday. It was less crowded on a Wednesday. I think the Jack rabbit turned out pretty well.

A song for the person interested in birds
I thought he was an ornithologist
Come to dust off the feathers
He turned out to be an aesthetist
Tracing patterns in books of letters.
"Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." - Henry Van Dyke
I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough, without ever having felt sorry for itself.
D.H. Lawrence
Proper scan on this one to boot!

I went to the African Mammals wing of the Natural History Museum today. It was very crowded with few places to sit and lots of people standing in front of me to look at the displays. Maybe Wednesdays will be a bit quieter. The little kids made the sounds for the Cheetah as they walked by, "Grr!".
I had a really nice drawing of a small Owl but I gave it away to some very earnest complimenters. Next time I'll photo them before handing them over. I also met a fellow artist named Gerard who said he sketches the owls every week.
