New York City is proud to be the new home of Amazon's second headquarters. We have the best, brightest, and most diverse workforce, and are home to virtually every industry.
Thank you for joining us @nycxdesign, take a look back at a few of the installations and exhibits that were throughout the city!
New Yorkers and Their Cars
According to recent census estimates, almost 1.4 million households in New York City own a car compared to 3.1 million total households. This means 45 percent of all households in the city own a car (and almost 3 percent that own three or more!). Ownership is lowest in Manhattan, where only 22 percent of households own a car, while ownership is highest in Staten Island where cars are owned by 83 percent of all households. Queens (62 percent) is also above the city average, while the Bronx (40 percent) and Brooklyn (44 percent) look more like the city as a whole.
While almost half the households in the city own cars, fewer people use them to commute. Of the 3.8 million workers in the city, only 27 percent commute via car, truck, or van. Staten Island is the only borough where the majority of commuters (64 percent) drive, while only 8 percent of Manhattanites drive to work. Staten Island is also the only borough where more commuters drive than take the subway, but it’s close in Queens. In Queens, an even 38 percent of people drive to work, but 38.2 percent take the subway—a difference of under 3,000 people.
New York City is famous for its public transit system: the MTA has more stations than any other metro system in the world, has almost twice as many miles of track as any other North American system, and ridership is triple the next five largest American cities (Chicago, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia) combined. The recently launched NYC Ferry is surpassing all ridership expectations, and Citibike lets people traverse the city on two wheels.
Food travels via train, ship, plane, and truck en route to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, home to over 155 public and private wholesalers, including the New Fulton Fish Market, Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market, and the Cooperative Meat Market #FultonFresh

Starting August 29th, NYC Ferry will connect New Yorkers from Astoria, Roosevelt Island, and Long Island City to Manhattan.
2nd grade students from Bay Ridge’s PS 170 The Ralph A. Fabrizo School and PS 102 The Bayview School took a ride aboard one of the NYC Ferry vessels they helped name, "Lunch Box". They even received commemorative lunch boxes. :-)
All aboard! The first NYC Ferry boat, “Lunchbox”, was named by Bay Ridge’s P.S. 170 2nd graders.
The first Citywide Ferry boat is officially on its way to New York City!

New York City: Unemployment is at the lowest it’s been in years, while wages are up in all five boroughs.
Mayor de Blasio unveiled the latest designs and details for the new Union Square Tech Hub, a City-backed project to provide space for tech worker training, education, start-ups and convening.
The hub itself will generate 600 good paying jobs, and serve as a new home for Civic Hall that will include a digital job training facility for all New Yorkers, and modern, flexible workspaces designed to meet the unique needs of early-stage startups in New York’s vibrant innovation economy.

Mayor Bill de Blasio was joined by leaders from New York City’s fashion, film and television industries to announce the City’s $136 million commitment in a ‘Made in New York’ Campus at Bush Terminal. The underutilized Sunset Park buildings will be transformed into a hub for garment manufacturing and film and television production, and support more than 1,500 permanent jobs.
Brooklyn and Queens have some great public transportation options, including subways, Citi Bike, ferries, and more. People living and working along the waterfront deserve a public transportation option that works for them, too – and we have just the solution.
We call the proposed streetcar the Brooklyn-Queens Connector – BQX for short. Watch our video to learn more about BQX and to find out why we think this streetcar is such a great idea for the people of Brooklyn, Queens, and the entire City of New York.

Earlier this week we toured the old Sea View Hospital, which will be transformed into the first health-focused, mixed-use development in New York City.
The historic Sea View Hospital opened in 1913 and focused on treating tuberculosis patients with fresh air, rest and a nutritious diet−the only prescribed treatments at the time. The hospital was also the site of the first clinical trials for hydrazides treatments, which ultimately led to the cure of the disease. The hospital gradually ceased operations in the late 1950’s, after the cure was discovered: http://bit.ly/SeaViewHealthyCommunity
