No one’s saying a good life, they’re saying a life. We’re not talking a little red corvette, living in a 6 bedroom house in the suburbs and having a housekeeper and landscaper and 3 weeks paid vacations to Disneyland resort every year.
We want enough to pay rent in a place to live, utilities so we have running water and don’t freeze to death in 14 degree weather, have a reliable car so we can get to and from work, health insurance so chronic diseases like type 1 diabetes can not make us blind or kill us, and also have enough to buy food necessary to live.
If a company wants a living employee to work at their company, they should be required to pay them enough to live. Not unlike having to pay every other operating cost. They want to automate those jobs, they aren’t gonna be able to rely on the government giving the robots food stamps to charge it up so it can run. They aren’t going to be able to rely on government Robo-Medicaid to repair it when it breaks down. So of an employer wants an employee to work on their feet for 9 hours a day without a break to sit down and that winds up causing damage to their knees and ankles and back and ends up with the employee needing replacement surgery or knee braces or the like, the employer should be paying for that just like they’d have to pay to replace a broken screw or worn out hinges or shorted out circuit. If the employer requires the employee to have enough energy to do things like lift 50 lbs on a regular basis and stand up for 9 hours straight, the employer should be required to pay for the food and drink necessary to fuel said employee, just like they would be required to pay for the electricity or fuel to power a robot to do the job. If the employer wants the employee to show up to work on time not frozen to death and clean and hygienic, then the employer should foot the bill for housing and utility costs by paying the employee enough to pay for those things, just like if the employer wants a robot that’s not stolen or exposed to the elements so it breaks down or filthy when some customer tosses a drink in its face, they would required to pay to have a place to put it and have it cleaned and sheltered from storms.
You want a living employee to work for you? You have to pay them enough to live. Its called an operating cost. If you can’t afford your operating costs as a business owner, then you don’t get to run a business.
