i don’t know if this aligns with the way she’s perceived by the other characters in the show but i do like to think of utena as being conventionally unattractive. her masculinity is for all the canonical and commonly discussed reasons but also with the undercurrent of Well if i dressed like a girl then everyone would know that i’m ugly and kind of fat. if i tried to put on femininity i would hate it AND it wouldn’t suit me because i’m not cut out for being a girl. and that’s part of why akio and touga and their prince fantasies are so alluring. if i’m getting this attention from an older guy then maybe i really am pretty. or maybe i could be if i just put on this dress and do whatever he wants me to do.
