Matthias walked up to the man after eyeing him up for quite some time from afar. After all, it may not be bad to know whoâs all aboard on this ship heâs just happened to have gotten on to. He whistled, crossing his arms. âNice guns. I get that youâre quite the soldier, huh?â
âDoes that line actually help or just a way to start small talk?â Jamesâ brow raised slightly, but a smirk was crossed on his lips. âYou have no idea. Vega, James Vega. Must be one of the new recruits we picked up at port.â
@gossipingthief
  âWell â I like to pretend that you help out with it. But letâs be honest, you donât even put your clothes away. You just wait for me to crack and hang them up or put them in the drawers.â Kas continued to fold the laundry before quickly returning the quick kiss to James, a giggle surfacing shortly after. âReally? No other girl made that comment? Interesting.. Very interesting, James.â With a huff of exhaustion, Kasumi leaned her back onto the couch almost proud to have finally finished such a minute chore. âWe may have to conduct an investigation of this claim of yours.â
âThat is why they have this great device called the chair. Its there to hold all the clothes Iâm going to wear for the week while the floor hold the clothes that Iâve worn and need to wash. The chair is there for a reason Kas.â he was slightly joking, but no he did use the âchairâ method a lot. âHey I at least clean the laundry. I wash and dry them. That counts as helping out.â Least in his book. âNope no other girl.â he teased leaning back slightly. âNo I donât think we do. I think we just need to pretend that it is the truth and leave it at that. Maybe even relax and just enjoy that the clothing chore is done!â

âYou just spared our race another genocide.â
âYouâre picking that thing over us?â
âIâm still human. I make mistakes like everyone else.â
âYou are a great protector. But some things are beyond even you.â
âItâs a hell of a job, isnât it? Being the good guys.â
âSomeone else might have gotten it wrong.â

   Steady hands quickly snatched the folded shirt to reassemble it the way she feels is correct, knowing all too well how to fit everything in the drawers. However, him pressing onto her comment only was responded with a soft snort. âReally? Is your ego that big that you need validation over your size?â Kasumi shot him a playful gaze all the while continuing to fold their laundry, âIt was a dick comment. Ya happy, Vega? Make you get warm and fuzzy?â Of course her words seemed to be more hurtful than anything, she was sure he knew she was just pressing his buttons. âIâm sure Iâm not the first girl to tell you, but I sure as hell better be the last.â
He chuckled at the refolrd and shook his head. âIf youâre just going to refold my shirts why do I need to help you out folding them?â he asked jokingly. âMY ego is almost as big as Garrusâ ego. Almost, just a little bit smaller that his.â he laughed at his own comment. âYou can say that Iâm feeling some way of fuzzyness.â man she was setting him up for all these jokes. He was having too much fun with this. âYouâll actually be the first on that Kasumi, and of course the last.â he smiled giving her a light peck on the lips.Â
The moment James sprung up was enough to send her heart pounding having realized this mistake. There was a reason he left this in the past and here she was, digging up old wounds and making things worse all the while having hoped that somehow this was going to be for the best. Her small lithe body quickly scrambled to his side, attempting to capture his hands into her own in fear he would take anger out upon himself. Once his large hands were confined into her much smaller ones, she held their eyes embrace with a frown upon her features. Multiple times she attempted to shush his bursts of anger but then it hit her â maybe allowing him to release these pent up feelings that have been only multiplying in size for all this time. However, his whisper is what drove a sharp pain through her heart. âJames, you listen to me.. Pain is something that you canât escape. And rather than ignoring it, you face it head on. I mean, you have faced Collectors, Reapers, Ceberus â donât let this be the thing that scares you the most. And look at me, James, look at me.â One small hand captured his chin, forcing him to hold their eye contact. âYou are here on this world for a reason. And I like to think that youâre here to save ME from myself after all these years of darkness I have had to face. Nothing as similar as yours, but I always felt so alone until you came into my life. Is that not a reason enough to be here? To be by my side?â There was a pause in her words, something she never imagined coming to say. Especially to James. âApril was the little girl, no?â Lips purse together, trying to find the right thing to say. âYou can always have her live on in spirit. If, yâknow, we ever had a daughter..? I donât know. James, main point, wasnât your fault. You canât just ignore this.â
But it was his fault. All of it was his fault because he couldnât be the hero of that story. Loosing all but one of his squad members, letting his captain down, and even worse, letting innocent civilians be sacrificed all to save one Asari. An Asari that held the key to destroying the Collectors once and for all. He wanted to look away, wanted to escape the room, but the small strength from the woman kept him there. He listened to her words, but couldnât let them penetrate the guilt that had been built up for years. Three years and he still felt the guilt resting on his mind. âNone of that matters. I couldnât be like Shepard. I couldnât save everyone. Iâm no hero, not like the Commander.â he remember the one thing that stuck with from Treeya, âI think you did what any good leader would do. There was no right choice. So you made what you felt was the best choice.â those words echoed through out his mind. He made the choice of what he thought was best...but was it really the best when he once had feeling for the Asari? Did he do it out of feeling or because he knew that was the best choice? Those thoughts swirled around his mind as he looked directly into Kasumiâs eyes. âI wish I could escape this pain. I thought I had buried the box that contained all of this, but its still there.â he sighed leaning his forehead against hers. âThe one thing I took from all of that was I knew how Shepard felt. I knew how she felt when she couldnât save those back on Earth before the attack. Couldnât save all the colonist on the Collectors home base.â he spoke softly. He knew what it was like to have to make a choice like Shepard did. His head jolted up looking into her eyes once more at the mention of a daughter. âKas...â he breathed out. A daughter of his own, one just like April, attitude and all. âDo you mean that?â

Turning in her seat she flagged down the bartender with a gesture and a couple bottles appeared shortly thereafter.
âCheers.â She said, tapping hers against his before taking a drink. âSo, whatâs an Alliance Marine doing in this pit?â She asked, keeping her tone friendly and conversational, âDonât you guys normally haunt Afterlife or the upper levels?â The fact that he was Alliance was evident for all to see, the man was practically in uniform. Sarah had thought about joining when she was a kid, but the raid on Mindoir killed that dream. Her shoulder still gave her issues from time to time.
She had caught the appraising look he had given her, but also noticed how he had become slightly guarded. Not surprising, she was a stranger and in this place not being on your guard could mean a shiv in your back.
âCheers.â he replied knocking the glass with hers. His brow raised at the question, but answered anyway. âIts my home away from home. A great place to come and drown everything away.â He spoke wrapping his lips around the neck of the bottle. Omega was his home. He didnât have one back on Earth, and didnât belong anywhere else. So why not here where the nobodies all live together. âHa, only those who want to get their asses kicked out by Aria.â he added. No he didnât care for Afterlife. Down where no one wanted to be bothered by the loud music and stupidity, this is where he wanted to be.Â
âWhat about yourself? Isnât this part a little dangerous?â he asked, but he knew fully well that this woman could take care of herself. The way she held herself and made her presence clear, she wasnât someone anyone would want to mess with. âOr did you come join the rest of us in the dark?â he asked taking another swig of the drink.Â
@spectreofhope
âSomeone who thought was lost returns-pffpft.â Her arms moved down to her lap while she laughed. The bottle in her hand clinked against the seat of the chair. âI fucking hate that. Itâs so bloody selfish. Wha I miss my Dad. Yeah I do fuckin too.â
He could have let his anger out. Rip the commander a new one with his words, but that wouldnât be fair. He could see how intoxicated she was and knew those words where just brought on by the drink clouding the mind. Why did he even start this conversation, it was just going to end up with anger and yelling. Maybe a couple of broken bottles here and there. âI could give two shits about that man. Reapers could have ended his miserable life for all I care. Hell he could have turned into a Husk and I wouldnât give a shit.â
