Say Something || Sofia & Marcus
marcus-carlisleâ:
âThere are a lot of fake marriages happening for different reasons, this one is unique of course but itâs not rare to have fake marriages happen.â Marcus was aware that he sounded like the type of person that would engage in something like this, but he wasnât. He may have a friend or two that found the easy way to achieve things and though he wasnât a fan of that method, in this case he was willing to help Sofia and Manny any means necessary. âAs long as it takes for you to win this,â he said. âMineâs not going anywhere either, Iâm too busy to go on dates let alone settle down any time soon. As to how we explain to Manny⌠that might be tricker but the good thing is that he already knows me and knows we are family. Itâs better than a stranger getting involved altogether.â
âIt might happen for one reason or another, but usually Iâd assume both people are getting something out of this. Youâd be doing this just for me. And Marcus, you deserve a real marriage. You might not have time for it now, but one day you will be, and youâll have to go through an entire divorce just to get to be with a woman you love. Iâm not worth the hassle,â she frowned and ran a hand through her hair. While she believed she wasnât the hassle, she knew Manny was but she had to at least try to give Marcus as many outs as she could before he tied himself to them. âIf we really do this, I want a prenup. To protect you. I donât want to take anything from you.â
Lean on Me || Marcus & Sofia
marcus-carlisleâ:
Marcusâ heart hurt for Sofia. No mother should ever feel like they had to worry about all of this for their child. Especially not when Manny was so little and young. If he knew what was happening, it could cause for so many traumatic memories to resurface when he was older. And it wasnât fair for Sofia either. For the time being, Marcus was going to do whatever he could in his power to help them, even if that meant going against his own brother. His arms wrapped tighter around her to hold her as close as he could for comfort, being the only thing he could provide for her at the moment. âYeah, letâs not talk about it anymore for tonight. Just try to relax and keep calm.âÂ

âWeird, and to think you didnât even consider the other option where we could pretend to play happy families and act like we all got along. Donât act like Iâm that daft. I do know Mannyâs name, and in fact you can thank good ole Uncle Marcus for mentioning him to me.â
âYou lost that option when you literally paid me to disappear from your life with my child. Why would I ever want to play at being a happy family with you? It doesnât matter if you know his name. You donât know anything about him.â

âIt was too much to think you had a brain, huh? I offered you the easy way out and you decided not to take it so look where we are now. And nobody to blame but yourself too.â
âMaybe youâre the one without the brain if you thought I was just going to hand my child over to you without a fight when you donât even know his name.â

Say Something || Sofia & Marcus
marcus-carlisleâ:
âItâs not that uncommon.â Marcus had heard of a few cases before, sure he didnât think it was something he was going to think about ever but here they were. He wanted Sofia to have full custody of Manny and after seeing everything that the lawyer laid out for them if they didnât go through with this plan â there was a high chance she could lose. âI know itâs very extreme for us and nothing we wouldâve seen coming, but after itâs all over thereâs always divorce Sofia. It doesnât mean it has to be forever, I wouldnât want to keep you from doing whatever you wanted in the future. Itâs a temporary solution to ensure that Manny will remain with you. I think youâre the one that really needs to think about this here.â
âIsnât it?â Sofia looked over at him, trying to read what was going on in his head. âWhen have you ever heard of this outside of what the lawyer just told us?â She certainly never had. It sounded so dramatic, but then desperate people were prone to do dramatic things. âBut how long would we have to stay together for them to believe this? Thereâs got to be some rule against it right? Like thereâs a rule against marrying for a visa?â she rambled, her mind taking her in 100 different directions. You donât want to keep me from my future? Marcus, youâre the one that would be putting your love life on hold for me. Believe me, mineâs not going anywhere. We donât know how long this could last or, how would we even explain it to Manny?â
Lean on Me || Marcus & Sofia
marcus-carlisleâ:
âAlright fine,â he agreed, for now. Marcus didnât want Sofia to pay him or feel like she needed to, but if he had to let her believe that that was what she needed right now then heâd do that.  âManny can still say something, he knows you and you alone. Has Ricky even attempted to learn his name? Or hold him once? Kids are smart, Sof.â There was probably not much Marcus could say to ease Sofiaâs worries and he didnât blame her. His brother was doing this the worst way possible and sometimes Marcus wished he could just pay him off but that was just going to put Ricky at an advantage and Marcus refused to give him what he wanted. âWeâll figure this out,â he smiled at her lightly, reaching out for her hand.Â
âThank you,â she said softly, relieved that heâd let her win this one. Usually she argued his gifts but let them happen, but this time was different. It had to be different. She needed to feel like she wasnât a pushover. She needed to feel like she could take care of the two of them if all else failed. âNo...he hasnât,â she said slowly, knowing that Marcus was right. Ricky hadnât even known Mannyâs name when heâd come by, but that didnât mean he couldnât do his research. She sighed and turned her head further into his shoulder, seeking out his comfort. âI donât want to think about it anymore tonight,â she confessed. Her eyes squeezed shut, trying to shut out everything that was threatening to overwhelm her. âCan we just...put a pin in it?â
marcus-carlisleâ:
âWeâll see about that,â he teased, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. âSo what Iâm hearing is that I should do all that you just said and still boost my ego in the end? You shouldâve just said so before.â He nudged her arm gently with his elbow.âWell I will admit that some of them are quite beautiful but I just didnât think about approaching since I donât know them and if they have their families with a partner,â he admitted. âSo itâs like a single moms club?â He raised an amused brow. Before he was going to say something else, his phone chimed a couple of times. When he read the texts, he tried his best to keep himself composed. âI have to go,â he turned to Sofia, setting down his plate at table behind her. âThe party is great, Manny is one lucky little guy to have a mom like you.â
âYes, thatâs exactly what youâre saying. Because youâre a great guy and you deserve to have your ego boosted,â she chuckled. âWell, if one ever catches your eye,â she shrugged, âJust tell me and I can see what I can do for you,â she offered, her brow furrowing as the sound of Marcusâ phone cut her off and the abrupt change in tone threw her for a loop. âOh, uh, okay. Thanks? I hope everything is okay.â She watched as he hurried away, a strange sinking feeling coming over her, but she brushed it off and turned back to watch the kids.
Happy Motherâs Day, Sofia!
Iâve watched you take care of Manny like no other and maybe Iâm a little biased but Iâve been raised among the best mothers and women and I can truthfully say youâre one of the top as well. You deserve more than one motherâs day. I hope you enjoy the flowers.
Love,Â
Marcus

marcus-carlisleâ:
I have had clients do this before and won their cases. It is an idea that is very out there but it works. With you two together, the chances are higher and there is no way the judge would be against your favor. You donât have to decide now what you want to do but the clock is ticking. Let me know what you decide.Â
After the lawyer exited the conference room, Marcus turned to look at Sofia. It was a huge step. One that he hadnât thought about before and he was sure Sofia hadnât thought about either. Marcus loved both Sofia and Manny and heâd do anything to help them, but he also didnât want to push for something that Sofia wasnât on board with. âItâs crazy to even think about it, right?â They could play the part. They had been friends for so long now that they could sell it. Marcus was actively involved in Mannyâs life that no one would think it was weird, except maybe his family. Something so sudden like that this wasnât like Marcus and there would be a lot of convincing to do. âWhat do you think about it?â
Sofia sat there in utter shock of the idea that was placed before them. Sure the facts and statistics and logic behind it added up, sure it would tip the scale unquestionably in her favor, but it was a big ask. She wasnât even sure if it was right of her to ask something like that of Marcus. She said sheâd do anything to help ensure Ricky didnât stand a chance of taking Manny, but this? Essentially asking Marcus to throw away his life on her? How could she do that to the man who had already given so much to her and her son? âItâs-I canât believe itâs something that people really do,â she admitted, still in a bit of a daze. She lifted her eyes to his face, trying to get a gauge on his opinion about the entire thing. âIt would be extreme...but then Iâm sure Ricky will be too,â she said, still mulling the idea over in her mind, not able to give him a proper answer just yet. âI mean what do you think? This-this doesnât have to be your problem, but if we actually went through with this, it would be. There wouldnât be a way out of it for you.â

marcus-carlisleâ:
âSofia, please⌠you donât have to. Iâm helping you because I want to not because I want you to pay me back.â He told her once more, though he could say it over and over and sheâd still say that she was going to pay him back. Marcus knew that if the roles were reversed, heâd do the same as her and want to pay back whatever was given to him so he didnât blame her. He wished there was a way he could help her even more than just throwing money at lawyers and offering financial support. There had to be a better way to help her, a way where she didnât have to pay him back for anything. âThey canât just look at that. If it had to do with mainly money, they wouldnât let more than half of the families out there foster kids for a check. Your home is safe, you give your son unconditional love and more. Theyâd be stupid and a shit judge to look past that.â
âI donât have to, but I need to, Marcus.â It was almost a matter of pride after Ricky had accused her of being a gold digger. She needed to prove to herself that she could look out for Manny herself. âI know you donât want me to pay you back, and I know I never have to, but...â She didnât know how to explain it. Taking Marcusâ charity felt wrong, so even if it took her years to find a way to pay him back, she would. This was her fight for her son. âI need you to let me pay you back eventually once all this is over. Please?â She looked over at him, hoping her eyes could convey what she couldnât put to words. âI know that they shouldnât be able to, but money? Thatâs a hard fact. Everything else, they could probably find a way to fabricate. Manny is 5 so how much can his opinion hold up? I just have to be prepared for the worst case scenario, and I have to figure out how Iâm going to fight it. I appreciate that youâre trying to be optimistic, Marcus, but this is the guy that accused me of not being pregnant with his kid then paid me off to disappear. I donât expect him to be honorable about any of this.â
marcus-carlisleâ:
âHey now,â he pointed a finger at her. âWe never said anything about tickling.â He gave her almost a stern look. If she tried that she was going to get him there and he still wanted to uphold whatever giantness he was trying to uphold over her. Marcus narrowed his eyes at her with a tilt of his head, trying to read what she had said even if it wasnât one hundred percent serious and she was doing what she usually did with him, keeping him on his toes and teasing him. âWell would you want me to put myself down and call myself ugly or unattractive? I feel like whichever I say about me youâd call me out on it so thereâs no winning with you,â he chuckled. âThey have?â Marcus wasnât too surprised. Every time he had an event to attend or was out and about with some friends, heâd get approached and asked out on dates or women would just show their interest in him, but it wasnât often that heâd say yes. âI thought they were all married to be honest, I never really paid attention to them in that way.â
âYou just said you didnât think I could make you move, and I think I can,â she grinned proudly up at him. His stern look and imposing height werenât effecting her in the slightest. âMaybe Iâm willing to win through whatever means necessary.â Her eyes sparkled with the joke as she stared him down, holding back a laugh. âWell at least if you called yourself unattractive, youâd come across as humble and then Iâd be responsible for telling you that you were being silly, of course youâre attractive. It would have worked out better for you in the end,â she shrugged with a smile. âOf course they have, silly, look at you,â she gestured at him. âYouâre the whole package, youâre just too busy to see it or them.â She shrugged, âSome of them are, but some of them are single moms like me. We kind of find each other. Itâs weird like that.â

marcus-carlisleâ:
Hearing her say that he was one of the best things that had happened to her and Manny â it made him feel something deep inside him. Marcus cared so much for the two of them, way too damn much. The two were the main part of hi family he kept in touch regularly, seeing them almost every day and stopping by their home. Marcus nodded and gave her a small smile, understanding that whatever may come out of her mouth in moments of distress, she didnât truly mean and she still wanted him in her life. Which was a relief for him, he didnât know what heâd do without them in their life. âI wonât just get you a reliable lawyer, Iâm going to get you the best lawyer we can find for this.â He promised her. His arm went around her middle, holding her close to comfort her, while his other hand still held hers. âNot to sound cocky or anything but between Ricky and I, heâs not the one who has a successful company worth millions.â
âIâm still going to find a way to pay you back,â she insisted, snuggling into his comfort as his arm went around her. She might not be willing to say no completely to his help, but she still wanted to do what she could to help out. Manny was her son, and no matter how much help Marcus was, she still felt like she had to be the one to provide for him as much as she could on her own. Especially after her short conversation with Ricky. She didnât want to give any judge any reason to think that she couldnât care for her own son. âI know, but thatâs your money that you earned. Itâs not mine. You can finance all the judges you want, but at the end of the day, itâs going to come down to how well I can support my family, right?â she questioned, not meaning to take another dig at Marcusâ wealth or lifestyle. It was simply that no one cared how much the uncle made. His financial situation was completely independent from her own even if he insisted on helping out.
marcus-carlisleâ:
âYou might be able to make me flinch but like a tiny bit, thatâs it. I donât think youâd be able to move me from my spot at all.â He shook his head, an amused smile staying put on his face. Sofia was one of the few people Marcus could be a little more goofy with, she took him seriously when it needed to be serious, but then she also let him be fun when it was appropriate. It was a nice balance. âYouâve got a point there but maybe you had changed a little who knows, a lot could happen in a couple of minutes,â he pointed out. âI see, so I should step up with my offers is what youâre saying. I have many ideas in mind but I have a feeling youâd shut me down as soon as I say them.â Mainly because his ideas had to do with an impromptu trip for Manny to the other side of the country. âIâll have you know, it wasnât a silver spoon. It was a gold spoon, you got it wrong.â He joked, though she got him there. âSure but thatâs not something I think about.â He was surprised that they were asking questions, though he was glad Sofia told them that he didnât date around much, maybe that way they wouldnât bombard him with questions.Â
âI think I could make you move,â she said confidently. âRemind me, how ticklish are you?â she grinned up at him innocently. âPushing isnât the only way to make someone move, just remember that,â she chuckled. She wasnât going to follow through with her threat now with so many people around. There were enough rumors and questions about the two of them, and she didnât want to steal Mannyâs spotlight. âIf I ever decide to completely change who I am, Iâll be sure to let you know, until then, assume everything has stayed the same.â She shot him a suspicious glance, knowing that his ideas could be a little grand by her and Mannyâs standards. âIf you think Iâll shut you down, I trust your judgement. Itâs probably something incredibly extravagant. Oh a gold spoon, my bad, next time Iâll be sure to remember your obscene wealth,â she went along with the joke. âI donât hear you denying that youâre an attractive guy. Thatâs kind of narcissistic, donât you think?â she teased. âUm, some of them have asked about being set up with you, but Iâve told them that youâre a busy guy...unless thereâs one youâve got your eye on?â
Lean on Me || Marcus & Sofia
marcus-carlisleâ:
âItâs fine,â he reassured her once more. Perhaps Marcus had been a little too excessive with his gifts and overstepping with his generosity. It was just natural for him to want to help especially when it came to Sofia and Manny because he loved the two of them. And also because he hated that his brother had put them in the situation they were in. âI canât promise that weâll find a judge that wonât be corrupted but we can hope. Iâll talk to the lawyers and see what else they tell me â actually, you should be the one talking to them and not me.â Even though Marcus wanted to know every single detail he could know, making sure that he was keeping up with every step of the case and be ready to be there for Sofia and Manny. Sofiaâs question about Ricky almost broke him, he could see the fear of losing her son and it hurt him. âIt is a large sum of money with his name written on it but he doesnât have one thing you do, Mannyâs love. They might ask him questions and the judge will have to see that Manny doesnât even know his own father. They canât give custody to basically a stranger.â
âItâs not fine,â she shook her head. âMarcus, you are...youâre one of the best things thatâs happened to me since Manny, and I mean that outside of all the toys and gifts. Youâve been my rock,â she said softly. Her hands on his gave a little squeeze. It was important to her that he know how much he meant to her and that her comment over the phone had simply been one from a panicked place. âYouâre my best friend, and no matter how we came together, Iâm glad youâre in my life now, okay?â Her eyes searched his, making sure he understood what he meant to her. âYeah,â she nodded. âIâll...If you can make a list of reliable lawyers, Iâll talk to them. Actually, I wouldnât hate it if you went with me to talk with them.â Sofia didnât know about the law or lawyer types. She didnât know what she was getting into, and she was a little scared of making the wrong choice. This as something she couldnât screw up. She sighed at his answer and scooted closer, laying her head on Marcusâ shoulder. âI hope youâre right. I hope itâs really about whatâs best for him and not about who has the most money.â Because if it was about that, Sofia knew there was no way this would end well for her.

âI would like to see you try,â he glanced down at her with a slight smirk, evident that he was referring to their height difference. âTell me, have you always been this stubborn? because this is a new level of stubborn Sofia and itâs hard to make a deal with her,â he teased. Marcus like this whole thing they had going on at the moment, it was light and fun. No real feelings being hurt and the two could just mess with each other without any repercussions. âThe whole picking up the wrapping paper and presents should be left for Christmas. But fine, Iâll stop complaining about cleaning up, I donât want to seem like Iâm too delicate for it.â He rolled his eyes playfully. âWait what?â A brow raised at the comment about the moms. âThey have asked you that really? What did you tell them?â
âOh, you donât think I could take you?â she smirked back up at him, enjoying the playful banter between them. This was exactly what had drawn her to Marcus that night theyâd first met. He was always so easy to talk to and joke around with. He made everything feel light. âYouâve known me long enough to be able to answer that on your own by now,â she chuckled. âAnd what deal? I donât see you offering anything up. What Iâm offering is my bed in exchange for your cleaning services and breakfast tomorrow. I think that sounds fair, donât you?â she shrugged nonchalantly. âYou mean youâre not a trust fund baby whoâs been fed with a silver spoon his whole life?â she teased back. She knew how much of a hard worker Marcus really was, and that most of the money he spent, he earned himself. âYou didnât know?â she rose a brow at him, âCome on, Marcus, youâre an attractive guy, of course theyâve asked. And I tell them the truth,â she shrugged. âYouâre single. And that you donât really date all that much.â
Lean on Me || Marcus & Sofia
marcus-carlisleâ:
âI know,â he nodded, though he was still a bit hurt about it. Marcus just wanted to help her out and Manny, he didnât want anything in return. Not even a âthank youâ at times. It all came from his heart and what kind of person would he be if he sought out for something in return? âI donât know much about family cases but me being involved shouldnât affect you at all. We know that heâs doing this for money, he has to be. Why else would he suddenly be interested in Manny? The judges will need to see that and thereâs no way weâre going into this with a judge that will let themselves be corrupted by money.â It was unfortunate that there were way too many judges who did let themselves be driven by money and didnât care about what the case really entailed. Marcus sat next to Sofia, taking her hands into his to provide some sort of comfort. âI can testify for you, you need to get people who truly know you and Manny to testify for you. Provide strong statements that you are the most fit for your son.â
âI donât know whatâs come over me,â she confessed softly. Sure sheâd always tried to turn down Marcusâ gifts and generosity, but sheâd never been so quick to turn him down or undermine everything heâd done for her and Manny. She hated that Rickyâs comment about her mooching off of Marcus had gotten to her so easily. âI know he doesnât want Manny out of the goodness of his heart, but,â she shook her head. âI think you have more faith in people than I do. How are we possibly going to make sure we find a judge that canât be corrupted? By money or promises, or, some other thing?â She was a nurse. She worked in a job all about helping people, and she still saw all the corruption in the hospital. She saw how the rich benefited over the poor, why wouldnât it be the same everywhere else. She glanced up at the warm feeling of his hands around hers, and already a sense of calm was starting to make itâs way through her panicked mind. She nodded, letting the information settle over her. âIâll start making a list...Marcus,â her voice was small as she looked up at him. âTell me the truth. How far do you think heâll go to get Manny? I need to know. I need to be prepared.â
