This is so sad, and so true. Had an 18yo Latinx patient this week with an undetectable CD4 count and an opportunistic infection. He was not born with HIV- it was acquired through a sexual encounter. This child, who has dreams and talents and hopes, may not live past his 20s. All because of inadequate sexual education and awful access to healthcare.

In my experience preceded was next to useless for most people but it was the only thing that would work with those patients with IVDU or heavy pot history who would be awake on 80 of propofol. It was often a disappointment though,

Some studies show that use of precedex shortens ICU stay, on average, by 2 days.

Personal experience: it either REALLY works or REALLY doesn’t do anything. There is no medium effect, even with a low dose. I don’t hate it and usually it’s worth a try, but I wouldn’t want to be intubated and just on precedex.
