I donât know about any of you but I just discovered r/lossprevention and thereâs some interesting stuff on there. Someone who openly admitted theyâre a shoplifter (whyyy would you do that?) asked what are some common ways that shoplifters are caught this it what someone said:
I posted a list of how lifters mess up before, it goes like this:
Getting out of the car and putting on a backpack [Iâm guilty of this lol]
Covering your face as you walk in the door
Looking at people, not merchandise
Walking by my office and trying to see if the light is on
Selecting a hiding item (trash can, tote, large box) and placing it in the cart before going to a high theft area
Swearing at old people/kids
Stealing from me and then coming back
No belt [for people who steal pants]
Hole in ass of pants [worn clothes, probably homeless]
Going in circles [Iâm guilty of this too]
Carrying a dufflebag or large backpack
All of those, and then some, are mistakes that led me to catching someone.
Some of those like sunglasses and clothing are pretty obvious, but others you might not always think about. For example, I know some lifters like to bring in receipts so it looks like youâre returning stuff or plan to hold it in your hand as you walk out so it looks like you bought it, but I guess some LP are aware of this trick?
Floor surveillance is always easier than cameras. There is often something different that is difficult to articulate with shoplifters. When you spend all day, every day, watching people shop it becomes easier and easier to see people pretending to shop. The way they move, walk through a store, pick up and look at merchandise, the way they carry items or place them in a cart or basket is all just off. There are non verbal ticks that people give off that are obvious, as well as other overt actions like unseasonably warm clothing, untucking or tucking shirt, building a set up cart etc. Doesnât work all the time, especially with spontaneous thefts where the person is primarily shopping.
In other words, unless youâre a master actor, chances are that they will notice something is different about you. This is why itâs important to realize all the little signs youâre giving off and try to correct them. Convince yourself that what youâre doing is perfectly normal. Pay attention to everything!
