Dear Tumblr,
So sick.
Itās probably a cold, but itās the WORST cold EVER.
This weekend in a nutshell: Ā Fraudulent charges on credit card, so thatās shut down (and what is it with thieves and Home Depot??),Ā Sick, Phone spontaneously broke, bought a new one (can you tell Iām excited? Ā Iām not excited at all, and the newĀ āsmartā phone seems to āthinkā it has no SIM card about half the time), got stuck on a train that broke down, more sick. Forever dark out.Ā
Pink! A few weeks ago, I got notice that the health insurence provided by my employer (no end of irony here) was SO crappy that, in order to continue to count as real, legitimate insurence, they needed to add more benefits. There must have been some kind of strategy behind which benefits were added, but in any case, I win. Hearing aids are NOT covered by most insurence plans in the US (people are always surprised to learn this, as well as how expensive they actually are), but now mine are (well, 80%). Which is great because my old (blue, out of pocket) ones are/were ancient and on their last legs.

Oooof I had one big piece of work that I wanted to get done today (big, but doable/draftable in a day). I spent much of the morning laying the groundwork - researching, reading, listing...all of the preliminary steps...
And then a friend/colleague asked me to help him with a grant proposal. Ā Two hours reading and editing, three hours face to face, and there went the afternoon. Ā As I was reading and editing on my own I told myself this would save me time when we met. Ā I headed over to the meeting planning on cutting it off after an hour. I should have known better - I just canāt do a half assed job when someone asks for help. Ā Just canāt do it. Ā
So now itās 6h40 on Friday night, and I am feeling vaguely sorry for myself that I still need to complete this piece of work. Ā Iām sure if I didnāt have work in front of me, I wouldn't be feeling sleepy, but I am. Anyway, other than writing a tumblr post to procrastinate further, I guess the only thing to do is do it...
On a brighter note, VAMPIRE SWIM tomorrow!! Ā I am super excited because open water season down here is pretty much over - Ā people are cold water weenies so anĀ āeventā like this is the only thing that will get people into the water. The swim is a fundraiser for the Red Cross, and is pretty casual. An hour swim (temps are not actually that cold at around 60F here) and a bonfire afterwards. Ā Sounds like a great break in an otherwise working weekend.
afternoon coffee ramblings...
Well yes, indeed, the outdoor pool did close yesterday. Ā So I made sure to get there nice and early this morning (but not too early, because then the swim team is there) to take advantage of a less-crowded time. Except it was still kiiindaā crowded, so I stood there scouting out which lane looked the most hospitable - how many snorkeling old men in that long course lane, how many angrily splashing thrashers in that short course lane - and while I stood there, I was spotted. Ā Yes, I was spotted and pulled into a 45 minute conversation on the pool deck. And donāt get me wrong, it was with a very nice man, and in fact, it involved stuff I actually wanted to know (nothing to do with swimming) but it did, in fact, take 45 minutes. By the time he left, I was in the same position of scouting the lanes, but now with time for only a really quick dip. Long course, 1500m. Ā You win some, you lose some.
Iāve been super seriously productive on this one editing job that Iāve been putting off forever. This is only because now I am doing this in order to put off several other things that need to be done. My apartment got noticeably cleaner over the weekend as well...
The pool sent out an email this morning letting everyone know that today would be the LAST day the outdoor pool would be open until Spring. Ā This was a shocker - I definitely thought we had at least until November, and I know I was not alone in thinking that. Oh well. Ā I was headed that way anyway, but this added a sense of urgency, to say the least. Ā The water was 68F, but there was still a healthy crowd out there. Ā Back to a hot and (somewhat) crowded indoor pool tomorrow, I suppose. Ā At least I have the Vampire swim next weekend in Annapolis to look forward to! (and and and a bonfire afterwards!)
I was meant to head to some friendsā for dinner on the last night of Sukkot tonight, but they changed the plans so many times and so last minute (aka, today) that in the end I gave my thanks and apologies and said letās try this again sometime soon. I absolutely would have gone if we could have stuck to a reasonable time, but I am feeling uber busy and secretly relieved to have my evening back.
Iām eating chia pudding! Ā Dinosaur eggs in my mouth! :)
Has anyone seen Miss Peregrineās Home for Peculiar Children? Ā Iāve been planning to see this for a while, but just curious - is it any good?
Soooo the last few weeks have been a bit more slothful than I planned for. Or maybe I just didnt plan well enough. I intended to take a few weeks (read: October) as anĀ āoffseason,ā which, in my head, meant I would get back into a running habit and train for a 5k, become an expert yogi, and also swim at least 3 times a week. (and get LOADS of extra working and sleeping done in the extra time not training for several hours a day would give me?)Ā
In reality, lots of work, lots of stress. I ran a few times, hit the gym a few times with the intention to run on a treadmill and ended up walking instead, have been engaging in some half-hearted and brief yoga sessions (Iām counting those as wins though), and have been swimming 2-3 short and easy (yes both short and easy) sessions per week over the past three-ish weeks. Ā I went on a hike last Sunday morning (yay) and ended up with bloody ankles that have been killing my run-motivation this week, but anyway...maybe time for a bit more structure for this last week, and then time for base-building by November.
Structure includes coming back to Tumblr more regularly, right? Ā So hi!
*One thing that has been on point these few weeks has been my nutrition. Ā I am in the middle of a bit of a dietary experiment that I had been saving for the offseason. I decided to give it 30 days and see what I thought after that point. Ā Day 16 and going strong :)
Chicago!!!
Thinking of all the runblrs running today. Go team!!!

āThere now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefsācommerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme down-town is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours previous were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers thereā (Herman Melville)
Iām officially in the offseason now after swimming around Manhattan this weekend. As a New Yorker, I am so excited to have done this swim. Ā I started and ended at Pier A in the Battery, swimming up the East River, over the top in the Harlem River, and Down the Hudson River. I backstroked under all of Manhattanās 20 bridges to see what was under them, and I took a three mile detour over to New Jersey and back to avoid some off-schedule cruise ships pulling out into the Hudson. A bit more dramatic than expected, but a great day nonetheless. It was a grey day, but the rain held out. I waved to the crowds lining the walls at the battery on my way in to the finish and thought about some of the Tumblrs I met in New York.
Half birthday Hi!!
Hi!
I have been awful about updating here, but Iām going to turn that around in this, the second half of my year. Ā Itās my half birthday!! Ā so whatās new?
*The semester started a while back, and my seminar is going well so far - no oneās dropped it, amazingly, and the students seem pretty engaged...
*Almost crunch time on the dissertation - I have a bunch of other projects that I am trying to clear off of my plate in the next few weeks, and then it will be teaching and dissertation, 24/7. Ā My plan is to be done in the Spring semester. Ā If possible, Iād like to be done not even at the end of spring semester. Ā Some of these things are out of my hands, but Iām going to write that baby as fast as possible in the meantime. My department seems to be falling apart with alarming rapidity, so Iād like to finish before iām left holding it, gazing over the rubble that used to be a well-respected hotbed of intellectual life.
*Yep, those other projects are keeping me a little bit busy first though...cranking away at them
*Swimming! Ā The Lake George Marathon Swim (32 miles) took place this past weekend. Ā Perhaps Iāll recap it here sometime, but the shortest version of the event is that the entire thing was shut down after five hours in the water. Ā Not just my swim, but everyoneās (we were a field of 13 solo swimmers plus 13 relay teams). Ā The swim was called off at a dark 8pm, but it took many over five hours to get back to shore. Ā Boats were sinking, police escorts and tows were called. Ā Bad news all around. Ā Sure, we had bad weather, but the more disappointing part of this was just how badly mismanaged the entire event was. Ā TheĀ āraceā director ignored all warnings, put us all in danger, and then was entirely unreachable for the duration of the event. Ā Some teams never actually got the message that the event had been called! (they managed to have the sense to pull themselves anyway). Ā It should never fall to the swimmer to make these kinds of calls - if you show up to anĀ āeventā some amount of expertise and judgement is what you are paying for. Ā A historic debacle in the marathon swimming community - thankfully, and luckily, no one was hurt (*cough* not even the swimmer that the race director hit with his boat). I hope to come back and conquer Lake George solo, without anĀ āeventā sometime in the future, as Iām sure many of us will.
While Iām excited to take a bit of an offseason, concentrate on some running, dropping some weight, etc., I COULD NOT let the season end on the sour note that was Lake George. In nine days (countĀ āem, 9) I will be swimming around Manhattan. Ā This was maybe not the most financially responsibleĀ conservative decision I could have made, but I think it will be worth it for a bunch of reasons (I should probably write a post on those sometime too...). In any case, I am SO looking forward to October 1!! Ā New Yorkers, come wave from shore!!Ā
Next yearās big swim is set and in the works as well, and I am so excited about that...
Gosh, I guess Iāll leave this post here - already too long, isnāt it?Ā
File under: Things I learned this summer
And then on Monday, I swam the North (Irish) Channel!!
A great day. Ā A tough day - tough conditions, but in the end, I walked up onto a beach in Scotland. Ā In the middle of the night. Ā Next to some guys camping out and having a bonfire!
More details later. Still tired :)
Okeydoke. Ā I dont have tracker information quite yet (it should be coming!), but the North Channel / Irish Channel is on for tomorrow morning! Ā Should be nice and tough... :)

Hiya!
Iām not sure if there will be a tracker for the North Channel, but I will try to put one up if there is.Ā At the moment, Saturday is looking like the best day for a swim, but things could still change. (They could change during the swim though too - the tides and currents are much trickier than those in the Channel)
At the moment, Iām waiting it out, swimming all over Ireland, and glad to be missing some of the heat wave back in the States!!!

A few people have asked, so I figured Iād post this now! These are the tumblrs Iāve heard are doing Ironman Lake Placid and their numbers (if theyāve posted them).
